Yeah so about the only thing that i have being at school right now is my mohawk. No piercings, visible tattoos, and my clothes are just, well, "normal". In one of my classes i was just informed that even if i ace every assignment and quiz/test i will be marked down to an F because my mohawk is not professional. My teacher said that it is department policy and really shut me down for any more discussion even when i told him that i have never had a problem with this before. Now, i recieved no warning for this and when some place has a policy the usually ask nicely if i could wear a hat or even tone it down or shave it off. Am i being stubborn if i won't cut my hair? And what the hell should i do about this? I am paying these people to teach me about cars not hair styles.

First, find out if it's really "department policy".

Yeah i'm going to talk to the department director. All the policy says is that "ties are not needed, neatness is." and in the grading part of the policy the is NOTHING about dress. Yeah, and there is another guy with long, curly hair down to his shoulders and he haas no points off at all. Not to mention the two guys that show up 10-15 minutes late every day and they don't have any points off at all. I'm more confused that angry at this point becuase i have never had a problem before and i don't know how anyone could be this much of an ass over this.

I would ask him but when i talked to him about it the first time it was very obvious that the conversation was over with his last words so i walked away calmly. I can't for any reason deal with people the way they deal with me. It feels wrong and if i try i feel kinda sick. I lost a lot of things that way but sometimes it gets to the other person and makes them act the same way. In this case i am going right to the higher-ups and i will present my case calmly and see what they have to say. If they deal with it correctly i will shave my hawk off or put on a hat but that means that they have to present a solid case in a proffesional manner.

Thats a bunch of shit. I have never heard of any school allowing a policy like this. Next time he trys that shit tell him that the ACLU could get involved real fast.

I am mohawked as my pic to the left shows. I also work in the trucking industry - though not as a driver. I work in sales. I have to sit down with businessmen regularly. I get away with the mohawk because I just slick it back during the week. Only once have I had an account comment on it - but I was walking into a hostile situation to begin with.

I have worked in a few places though where it was not allowed, because it was viewed as "unprofessional" and at one point in time I had to shave it off to even find a job (this was years ago now).

The way I see it, my hair isn't what defines me. My personality is what defines me. My mind, my heart, my soul. If I have to shave it off to make a living, so be it. I don't really care. I'm me with or without it.

Back when I had dreadlocks (to my waist by the time I cut 'em) it was never a problem... and I when started them they were nowhere near as common as now. But back then I worked mainly in the nonprofit sector, where no one is going to raise a stink over a "cultural" hairstyle. LIkewise, the two schools where I taught when I still had them were both afrocentric charter schools, so it certainly wasn't an issue either place.
