There's really no reason manufactures couldn't make cars styled like this on the outside. The only significant issue is what's called "die draw", which is how deep metal can be stretched in the tool before it rips. Old cars had their complex shapes made in mutliple small parts which would be cost prohibitive today. Those parts would have to be done in some sort of plastic.
