Aussie dollar slumps five per cent on US fears

Australia's homeless crisis is becoming so bad many are being kicked back onto the streets by shelters because there's no room.

A report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare looks at the state and federal Supported Accommodation Assistance program for homeless people, and victims of domestic violence.

It's found that although 14,000 people with housing needs were accommodated each night, hundreds were not.

More than half of the people turned away were under the age of 20, and it's found some groups, like couples with children, had more difficulty accessing accommodation than singles did.

Felicity Murdoch from the Institute of Health and Welfare says more than 350 people - mostly teenagers are being turned away every night.

“There’s certainly more people seeking accommodation, than there are places available.

“One of the things that we’ve found is that families in particular seem to have particular accommodation difficulties – one of the reasons for this is that families, when they are accommodated tend to stay a lot longer than individuals.”

Federal Housing Minister Tanya Plibersek says the AIHW figures make it clear governments need to improve their existing response to homelessness.

Ms Plibersek says the government has spent $150 million on an initiative to build 600 homes for the homeless, and is developing a white paper to set out a national plan to reduce homelessness.

Toronto, Canada's largest city of 5 million people, is cosmopolitan, culturally diverse, a Canadian and global economic force to be reckoned with - yet here we find the highest number of Canada's homeless individuals. Toronto's "Housing and Homelessness Report Card 2003" said "31,985 homeless individuals (including 4,779 children) stayed in a Toronto shelter at least once during 2002." That's the last Report Card we can find, but we know homelessness rates have continued to rise since then. The Toronto Disaster Relief Committee estimates that 4 to 6 people die every week on Toronto's streets.

its sad also that most homeless swarm to the city where loitering isnt as much of a nuisense.

Everyone here who has gone to city club has delt with homeless. iv hung out with the homeless on many occasians when i went with a group to hart plaza where many stay during the winter time.. most get dug deep where getting back up is impossible. getting a job is not a easy thing for these people. daily sanitary isnt easy also. the longer they stay homeless the worse of it gets. with no real address or phone number? how will employers even call them.

we have become used to the stereotype of the homeless man in detroit, crackhead, or alchoholic, this is something you should not judge on. with the economy slowing down more and more it might be time for many of us to step up and help out. cause it could be your brother, or your coworker that could get the short end of the stick. and we are all amarican, and we have lost our national pride. its not the goverment that creates pride. its the people who unite, and not seperate

My heart sang to see this kind of sentiment from someone else. Lately it seems that fewer and fewer people feel this way. IMO, that's THE reason for the current state of our country: people not caring about anything but their own lives. Give back a little, people! Not to the government, but to people who really need it. Donate an extra can of food this year, or an extra dollar. For every bit we feel the financial squeeze, there are many that are suffocating in it. Let's not let our fellow men and women drown out of apathy. Let's let our own hardship remind us of just how bad it COULD be, and make someone's rough path a little smoother. Let's all remind eachother what it means to be a true American. Maybe then we can turn this sinking ship around, despite the idiocy at the helm.

+1OR AS MANY AS I/WE CAN COUNT AS

If you have got...GIVE..

That is what I always say...& I don't give a fuck if I'm thought a bleeding heart or a commie'hippy socialist either.

WHEN I WAS HUNGRY, PEOPLE FED ME. OFTEN ENOUGH TO GAIN WEIGHT

(I was about 50 lbs UNDER WEIGHT) I was not homeless, but in a prolonged schizo state of mind...I lived in 3 different households at once for free.. worked 2 minimum wage jobs & gave my money to my gilfreind to save for an apartment..nearly ALL of my money (I smoke)..

...EVERYBODY ELSE FED ME. (even the managers at McD's I worked with did not let me pay for food...& even my co-workers at CC fed me more often than not.)

THAT, is why I will take time to BUY FOOD for peoples...not give them $

...except on an occasion...like if "Crackhead Joe" tells me he NEEDS $1.50 to get crack...

I'll give him $3 & tell him to drink some water too...

...& I just fell off the "topic-log"...

...I'll get back to the grit of the "Humanness" I was trying to get at.

..FOOD..SHELTER...GIVING..

(I think that to GIVE IT is the part of affection/love that Humans need)

...these are all necessary for Humans... they go madd without them...

..even beyond shelter; one needs a bit of space to have their nick-nacks &/OR personal spiritual private space (?)..

So, ya', we should help people up...remembering that if they do not WANT up; you can not help them.

...some peoples will never "fit" into Society...I find the definition of Civilization to at least imply caring for the Sick & the Elderly...

Civilisation: 3 a: refinement of thought, manners, or taste b: a situation of urban comfort

HaRuMpF!

Good post Rev...
This is one of the fundamental reasons why I have never gotten into the conservative/republican mindset... It seems to be based strictly on getting as much as you can, no matter who you hurt and what the consequences are. A person I went to school with who was very right wing said once, "Fuck the poor" he didn't see any connection to them because he had money. And therefore had no sympathy for them. Years later he contacted me and apologized, his family and him lost their wealth in the last few years, and found himself below the poverty line, he tracked me down just to say how off he had been, now that he has had to accept help from those that now have more in order to live.
Now I am not saying that any of the other parties are better, but at least they seem to have a focus on helping other then hording. Even if it is just face value

i think this goes beyond what parties are to blame. down to the core values of society. material possession means so little in the scope of unity. brothers, citizens. people are much more important then owning a expensive car. owning a overly large house means nothing if you dont even use 2 or 3 of the rooms. its the mindset of greed and both democrats and republicans have it. both value systems at its core are good value systems, but the people who are representing these systems are never going to do the right thing. we are amarica. the goverment isnt the true amarica.

its not the goverments that make the people. as you can see with every dictatorship. there pride didnt diminish in there hearts. and if a crisis forces us to unite. so be it. cause id rather be poor with no walls to hide myself in , then rich with a 10 foot steel fence.

I never make it up to CC...I'm old and crotchety, you see...but I wouldn't mind going up there for something like this.

Anyone know a way I can get a hold of Mike besides going to the club? Don't they have a website now?

So, that guy DIDN'T watch my car for the five dollars I gave him?

No!

Nor was his family waiting a couple miles away for him to find gas for their car so he could take his sick grandmother to church one last time before the lung cancer took it's toll and rendered her crippled for the next 20 years, which would mean he couldn't afford to pay for his daughter's college tuition and..... um...

Would you believe he just needed to get to Pontiac to see his crack dealer?

How about.....

That just made me LOL out loud!

I always marveled at how many people 'ran out of gas' in Detroit. Just, up and ran out.

Huh. It would be helpful, you would think, if cars had some sort of, y'know, gauge or something to tell you that's going to happen...wait a minute....

I do remember when I lived downtown this woman came up to me and said she needed money to get home.

'Where's home?'

'Royal oak'

'Show me your driver's license'

Which she did...and it said Royal Oak...so, against my better judgement, I gave her $5. I never give cash money to the folks on the street. (I made exceptions for No Pants Lydia. She was a charmer...)

So, a week later, I'm walking somewhere and I see THE SAME LADY. And she asks me AGAIN for gas to get home.

And I just started throwing a fit right there on Woodward. 'You're such a LIAR! I gave you $5 last week! You said you lived in Royal Oak!'

And she said 'Nuh-uh, I said home was Royal Oak. I LIVE in my car. See? It's right there.'

Caught on a technicality...dang.
