Good idea Marc!

Skinny Puppy - The sounds seem to dig down into the subconcious, where other electronic based bands will try to go for "solid" or "movement" oriented dance sounds, I find that Skinny Puppys bring about more emotions, images, and sensations then most bands. The end result is something that actually gets my heart beating more then dance music does. The sounds are very unnerving and yet addictive, the textures seem to almost effect me on a physical level.

Frontline Assembly - Detail oriented, every last ounce filled with programming and sound. Listening to their sounds is like being submerged in perfection of audio technology. Its like the heartbeat of the electrical world, if the entire media were formed into a sculputure of samples, beats, and dark aggression. Amazing production as well.

Haujobb - Simular to FLA in their attention to detail and production, this band seems to be the brooding somber side of the future. The strings and chords that sigh over the wash of beats and technological bath of sound. This bands soundscape sounds like the music from the future of art.

Steve Roach - With the exception of the occasional whispers etherial voices, the music is insturmental. The sounds and textures take you farther outside into the cosmic/natural realm of ideas. There is rhythm and precussion in the music that can get one moving, but not dancing necessarily. Some of his music is tribal, some of the sounds make you want to turn off the lights and hide under the covers. This is the music of dreams and space.

Dance or Die - Very underated band. Full of textures and patterns that seem to shift and flow like a living thing. Like someone flicked a switch and a sonic motion machine came to life and started evolving. The music is complex and full of suprises, key changes, and amazing vocal talent. They have an attention to detail that I simply don't hear from any other electro dance band. They have a dark mysterious sound, and yet also manage to be fun.... strange combination to do so flawlessly.

Rush - Rock music, but with an expansive use of sounds and skills that make ones mind full of ideas. A fantastic quality the music tells stories not just through lyrics, but through the interweaving sounds that they use. And the drums.... OMG Mr. Pert

No one has mentioned Led Zeppelin yet!! Jimmy Page is a master of studio effects and creating new sounds with traditional instruments..

I am more into the electronic side of things when it comes to sound effects and textures... I am not as good a judge of the conventional guitar, bass, drums...

AFOS had awesome guitars and keyboards and a sound no one else had

Pantera had the tough sounding guitar and drums,Dime Bag Darrel was a one of a kind guitarist

Therion took combining and orchestra and metal to a new level.

Kerry King of Slayer, one hell of a bad ass Guitarist

Front 242 - The band has amazing power to combine ambiance with beats. There sound seems to be so far advanced and tweaked that it leaves one needing to listen to a song several times to pick up on all the details and layers to it. Large washes of expressive noise seem to ride the waves of drums and movement.

Meatbeat Manifesto - This band clearly has its focus on drums and rhythm, but the incredible production leaves the sound think and lasting in ones mind. Every sound behaves as if it was designed to fill the track. Hip-Hop combined with experimental industrial, with layers upon layers of samples and eclectic noise.
