School Field Trip to Teacher's Lesbian Wedding Sparks Controversy

Another thing I'd like to know is if this was school sponsored and paid for ... like if they took district school buses and the like.

I know all our field trips we pay for as parents and all our field trip transportation is by parent carpools. Our school doesn't have any buses.

Also, you can't take a class of first graders alone. The teacher had to tell the parents who went something.

They ignored me when I said that.

Think I'll throw my opinion out. Now remember this is just my opinion so I don't want any BS over it, honest questions fine but any BS will either be ignored or I will vent. Have had a bad week.

1. I disagree with a field trip to a wedding. Now if the teacher was close to the parents of the kids and they were invited to a wedding, whether religious or city hall, I'm fine with that.

2. I don't believe the kids were used for political reasons. I believe the activist group is trying to use it for themselves. It looks to me like damage control.

"and perhaps, if parents forced the teachers to... teach, rather than take them on stupid field trips to help out political causes our children might be doing better."

Gaf, in response to this comment. Not all field trips are stupid and they can be a learning experience. It just depends on where the trip is to. In a way I disagree with the politcal aspect of this statement. But only in the sense that to understand the election process I can see a field trip for Jr high or High school students. Just clarifying when I feel that type of field trip would be good.

"Your there to TEACH CHILDREN facts, logic, and understand of academics. NOT TO INSTILL YOUR VIEW OF WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG IN OR ON THEM. That is the job of the parents"

Meg, in response to this statement I must disagree. Teachers are surrogate parents during the day. It is part of the teachers job to teach certain views to our children. Primarily fair play and social interaction skills. The teacher reinforces what the parents teach their children and in some cases teach what the parents should but don't. Too many parents drop the ball into the lap of the teachers and then complain when it suits them to.

edited to add stuff.

Which led to this

Last time I was in school we needed permission slips for field trips. So either the parents can't read or that teacher is in some serious trouble.

Permission was received. From the first article you quoted, emphasis mine:

First-graders in San Francisco took a field trip to City Hall to celebrate the marriage of their lesbian teacher on Friday, but opponents of same-sex marriage in the state say the field trip was an attempt to “indoctrinate” the students, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The field trip was suggested by a parent at the Creative Arts Charter School, and the school said the trip, where students tossed rose petals on their teacher and her wife as they left City Hall, was academically relevant.

From the second article you quoted, emphasis mine:

With parental permission, a public charter school took 18 first-graders on a field trip to San Francisco City Hall where their teacher and her female partner had just been wed by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

I didn't mean that all field trips were stupid, just this one and others like it where there is no real educational value.

You are most definatly right, at the time I was still rather dumbfounded that parents would be okay with their children being taken out of school for a wedding of all things.

Yes, 7 is too young to teach complex socio-political ideals. Nor is it, I think anyway, the schools job to teach them. Thats for the parents to do.

Exactly.

something I meant to say directly, but somehow, only merely implied.

and to answer your question...it said first grade

Some ppl say it was 1st or 2nd graders. I had heard that they were kindergardners. I also heard that alot of the parents didn't get the permission slips that they were suppose to get. If it had been MY child going to something like that & the permission slip had not be sent home, I would have been livid. That teacher had NO RIGHT to take her class to something. She wouldn't have been allowed to take her class if it was hetrosexual wedding. It is the parents responsibilty to teach that if they want to. One of the parents who complained about it was a woman from Hayward, Calif. (my home city)

The fact of the matter is,

Whether you are there or not... the child is watching their teacher, one whom they most likely look up to, respect, must answer to, learn from.... One of their teachers personal rituals in their personal life.... They are going to get some impression that goes far beyon the role of Teacher/Student... no matter what happens....

Seperation of church and state people

I've been amazed how much sway my daughters teachers can have on them, particularly at that age. (First grade) teachers are like gods/goddesses then.
