Man kills 13 yr old girl in 1986

After more than 22 years, Cindy Zarzycki's family can put her to rest

It’s been 22 years and 7 months, but Cindy Zarzycki’s family finally has a solid answer: The bones dug up on a rural plot of Macomb Township land in July indeed belong to the long-missing girl.

Authorities had to wait nearly four months for DNA testing to confirm that the remains were of Cindy, who was 13 when she disappeared in April 1986. Her convicted killer, Arthur Ream, led investigators this summer to her burial site along a riverbank on land that used to belong to a friend of his.

“It’s a great day for the parents,” said Eastpointe Police Detective Derek “Mac” McLaughlin. “Now they can move on with the funeral and know exactly where their little girl is.”

McLaughlin took on the case about 12 years ago and, after countless hours interviewing old and new witnesses and interrogating Ream, a convicted pedophile, asked the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office to levy charges in January.

Ream was convicted in June without a body. In August, he was sentenced to life without parole.

Authorities say he lured Cindy to his business’ warehouse on a Sunday morning by telling her he was throwing a surprise birthday party for his son and her budding boyfriend, Scott.

Instead, he raped and killed her, Assistant Prosecutor Steve Kaplan argued during the trial.

At his sentencing, Ream said he didn’t sexually assault Cindy and that her death was an accident.

Cindy had been grounded at the time of her death and had told her parents she was going to meet friends at a Dairy Queen near her home in East Detroit – which has since been renamed Eastpointe – to go to church. She was never seen again.

Investigators were confident the remains they recovered belonged to Cindy because items found with the bones were identified by family members – specifically mixed music tapes that Cindy carried around with her.

But to be sure, DNA samples were taken from Cindy’s divorced parents, Alice and Ed Zarzycki, as well as Cindy’s sister Constance. The testing concluded that it’s 28 billion times more likely that the bones belong to Cindy than anyone else, McLaughlin said.

The family is planning a memorial service Nov. 28, McLaughlin said. She is to be buried in Sanilac County’s Lexington next to a sister who died in infancy

i agree...hopefully this man is tossing salad suckin dick and being raped every day unil he dies and being beat on a regular basis

Yes, the judge should just hand him that says "Go directly to Slam-Me-In-My-Ass Prison. Do not pass go, do not collect any chance of parole" and that should be that. Unbelievable, but at least with the advances of modern technology we've been able to put this case (and many others like it) to rest, and that mother can give her baby a proper burial.
