We did it, say fanatics with links to Al Qaeda

A Muslim terror group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen claimed last night that it was behind the attacks in Mumbai.

If confirmed it would be the first time a group with links to Al Qaeda had targeted Westerners in India.

Islamist militants have repeatedly struck at Mumbai over the last 20 years. The worst attack was in 2006 when more than 200 people were killed in coordinated railway bombings during the evening rush hour.

The switch to attacking foreigners appears to be an attempt to cause maximum damage to India's economy and international reputation.

India has blamed most recent terror attacks on Islamist militant groups based in Pakistan or Bangladesh. But a new Islamic group calling itself the Indian Mujahideen emerged last year and claimed responsibility for several multiple bomb attacks in major cities. It is thought Deccan Mujahideen is linked to that group.

India's 150 million-strong Muslim population has long complained of discrimination at the hands of its Hindu majority.

Many also object to Indian rule in Kashmir, a region with a Muslim majority region which is claimed by both India and Pakistan.

Al Qaeda has repeatedly threatened to attack India in revenge for its policies in Kashmir, where there have been repeated allegations of atrocities.

Following is a chronology of some of the major attacks in India in the past five years:

• March 13, 2003 - A bomb attack on a commuter train in Mumbai kills 11 people.

• Aug. 25, 2003 - Two car bombs kill about 60 in Mumbai.

• Aug. 15, 2004 - A bomb explodes in the northeastern state of Assam, killing 16 people, mostly schoolchildren, and wounding dozens.

• Oct. 29, 2005 - Sixty-six people are killed when three blasts rip through markets in New Delhi.

• March 7, 2006 - At least 15 people are killed and 60 wounded in three blasts in the northerly Hindu pilgrimage city of Varanasi.

• July 11, 2006 - More than 180 people are killed in seven bomb explosions at railway stations and on trains in Mumbai that are blamed on Islamist militants.

• Sept. 8, 2006 - At least 32 people are killed in a series of explosions, including one near a mosque, in Malegaon town, 160 miles northeast of Mumbai.

• Feb. 19, 2007 - Two bombs explode aboard a train heading from India to Pakistan; at least 66 passengers, most of them Pakistanis, burn to death.

• May 18, 2007 - A bomb explodes during Friday prayers at a historic mosque in the southern city of Hyderabad, killing 11 worshippers. Police later shoot dead five people in clashes with hundreds of enraged Muslims who protest against the attack.

• Aug. 25, 2007 - Three coordinated explosions at an amusement park and a street stall in Hyderabad kill at least 40 people.

• May 13, 2008 - Seven bombs rip through the crowded streets of the western city of Jaipur, killing at least 63 people in markets and outside Hindu temples.

• July 25 - Eight small bombs hit the IT city of Bangalore, killing at least one woman and wounding at least 15.

• July 26 - At least 16 small bombs explode in Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat, killing 45 people and wounding 161. A little-known group called the 'Indian Mujahideen' claims responsibility for the attack and the May 13 attack in Jaipur.

• Sept 13 - At least five bombs explode in crowded markets and streets in the heart of New Delhi, killing at least 18 people and injuring scores more. The Indian Mujahideen again claim responsibility.

• Nov 26 - At least 80 people were killed in a series of attacks apparently aimed at tourists in India's financial capital Mumbai on Wednesday. Police said at least 250 people had been wounded.

The first-person accounts are really disturbing. Makes it hard to hide the truth now when a country has adequate net access.

Mumbai Attack Aftermath Detailed, Tweet by Tweet

By Noah Shachtman November 26, 2008 | 4:44:07

First-hand accounts of the deadly Mumbai attacks are pouring in on Twitter, Flickr, and other social media.

Twitter has fresh news every few seconds, on Mumbai, Bombay, #Mumbai, and @BreakingNewz.

"Hospital update. Shots still being fired. Also Metro cinema next door," tweets mumbaiattack. "Blood needed at JJ hospital," adds aeropolowoman, supplying the numbers for the blood bank.

A Google map of the attacks has already been set up. So has a shockingly-current Wikipedia page, which features a picture of one of the gun-toting attackers.

The local bloggers at Metblogs Mumbai have new updates every couple of minutes. So do the folks at GroundReport. Dozens of videos have been uploaded to YouTube. But the most remarkable citizen journalism may be coming from "Vinu," who is posting a stream of harrowing post-attack pictures to Flickr.

what really pisses me off is a hindu extremist group dislocated Christians from their homes and 30 of our churches were burned. Now porn aside I made my pact with God and Christ to try to be a good Christian but when I hear of my brethren getting attacked and the u.s. doing nothing it REALLY pisses me off.

I'm going down to my friends house later to sort some stuff out. his family suffered when Pakistan separated from India and he has not forgotten, no matter how tolerant he is otherwise (and he is the most patient man i have ever met).

I'm sure this will come up in the conversation

So the U.S. will only rescue people that are in the same political party as those in office? Regardless of belief we should probably consider it good manners to help our fellow countrymen. Hell, we are such a melting pot that is the most smug and selfish act to take one aspect like religion and say that it makes that person unworthy of rescue.

Its just too bad that the founding fathers didn't give two shits about what society would be like today otherwise we would be just fine. All those people who lived before us and didn't consider our needs were assholes!

Oh my side hurts from laughing...

Who said anything about fellow countrymen? What I read had no indication of US citizens being harmed, just christians.

And again, we are NOT a christian nation. That's India's job to clean up.

India and Pakistan almost came to nuclear blows 5 or 6 years ago. Don't encourage them.

I never said anything about nuclear exchange. Although it would seem the logical route for an islamic nation.

No we are not a Christain nation.

And I also have this problem with the way that Christians are treated. I know a few and people give them so much shit for things that I don't think apply.

Who cares who these people are attacking. Fellow country men, Christians, Jews, fellow Muslims, etc. It doesn't matter who is being attacked, people have to do something. The piracy that is going on right now but people are afraid to do anything. If small companies for hire can do something good, think about what a well trained military could do if they were given the right leash. The UN peacekeeping forces suck.

Todays world is more connected than some peole are willing to admit. There is more to do with it than the internet and trade. Why can we not help India? Why does a huge force of idiots wearing baby blue helmets need to go in and sit around in order to "help". Its not just India and Pakistan...these people are everywhere. How long will it take before people realize that no matter how many treaties are signed and peace conferences are held that these people won't listen. Guys wearing masks, using black market weapons, and beheading innocent people don't give two shits about treaties or laws. They don't care about the "rules of war" set after WW2. So why do we treat them like they listen? Why are there only half-assed efforts by some countries to rid themselves of these people and no help comes from the outside?

Its not India's job to clean up because in the whole scheme of things its the world's problem. Shit this is a cancer that we haven't treated and we are acting like it hasn't spread and will die out with time. Yeah if we fight it there will be problems and all the other shit that comes with war. But in the end I think that most people would rather be weak and hairless than riddled with cancer and unable to move.

I think you're confusing hindu fundies pushing xians around with muslims being dipshits.

and there are things like international borders getting in the way of your idea.

Ready for my response. If we are not a Christian nation then why has every president all 43 of them had to be sworn in with their hand over a holy bible. In courts b4 u go on stand u swear in with your right hand over a Christian bible. Also there is no other country in the world that possesses more Christians even in Rome than the USA.

1. there is no law or policy that says that presidents have to be sworn in upon a bible. they choose to do so because they happen to be christian. a congressman was just sworn in on a koran.

personally, i believe they should all be sworn in on a personally handwritten copy of the US Constitution, preamble to amendments.

whether or not we have a large number of christians makes no difference; we are not a christian nation.

Here is an american soldier in iraq getting a baptism notice the cross on the jeep to the right. We are not a Christian nation hmm I disagree.

LOL

That's most likely a military chaplain conducting that baptism. That cross could just as easily been a tree branch, star of david, or crescent. That chaplain may not even have been christian.

Here's a fun fact for you: Military chaplains are required to conduct necessary religious ceremonies for anyone that asks, as long as it does not violate UCMJ/milregs.

There were JEWISH and CHRISTIAN chaplains in the middle east conducting islamic funeral rights.

I was in a bar when this story came on. Me and 2 others were the only ones trying to listen...a few people looked at the screen and kept talking so loud we could not even hear.

Most of the bar didn't care or even pay attention even after we asked them kindly to shut up so we could hear.

It’s just become so common place I guess...

I suppose thats why everyone in other countries hates Americans...we come off like we don't care about anything but shopping and puffy snacks. And TV

Personally think 911 was staged by our own government...but I think attacks like this are not far behind on U.S. soil.
