Women say they'd go to jail to get skinny, mag finds

What exactly would women do to drop those extra pounds? Picture a cellblock packed with bald, 11-toed ladies.

A new Fitness magazine survey reveals that nearly one in four women would gladly spend a week behind bars to reach their ideal weight. But that's just the tip of the iceberg lettuce when it comes to getting thin:

85% would stroll through life with an extra toe to keep off the pounds.

23% would shave their heads.

Nearly 50% would rather lose 20 pounds than live to be 100.

"Yes, it can be funny to hear about the lengths women will go to to lose a few pounds," said Fitness editor-in-chief Denise Brodey. "But on a serious note, it's unsettling to see just how deep-seated our unhappiness with our bodies is."

The magazine surveyed 1,000 women age 18 and older about their appetites and attitudes. Women, the survey found, diet more often in a bid to look better (41%) than to feel better (25%) or to be healthier (35%).

The survey also found 42% of women had used a diet drug or supplement to lose weight, while 24% tried a one-day liquids-only diet. One in four fasted on the day of a big event in an effort to look their best.

Other dieting tricks included drinking copious amounts of water (67%) and chewing gum (20%).

What doesn't work? Cutting out desserts - only 4% of women found that effective.

In a bit of a contradiction, 51% of women would prefer Keira Knightly's waifish body over Queen Latifah's full-figured frame (49%), but the vast majority (76%) would prefer the reputation of "friendly, chubby girl" to "skinny witch" (24%).

The Daily News asked several local women yesterday what they would sacrifice to achieve their ideal weight.

Tara Amelchenko, 30, of Manhattan, said she'd be willing to grow a sixth toe, but wouldn't go to jail or shave her head. "More of me to love," she said of the additional toe.

Anne Sirkin, 37, of Holmdel, N.J., admitted she'd spend time behind bars and also cut off all her hair.

"I'd do that for sure," she said. "Hair grows back."

When I was in school I always hoped to get mono because everyone who got it came back a good 20 pounds lighter. I even hung around this one girl purposely to get mono. I never got it. So eventually I went to band camp (I didn't play a flute OR stick any other instrument anywhere) but I flagged my ass down 20 pounds.
