Do you like Vista or XP better? I've been getting alot of compliants from former customers from when I owned a computer company asking me for help now all these years later with questions on Vista. I run XP so I tell them I have very limited knowledge of Vista just when I'm at my friend Pauls I use it. I think its over firewalled personally. I wish I was still up to speed with my computer skills I mean I still got my associates in it, but thats from '93 so I know hardware just didn't keep up with software and my mental illness limits me. Anyways which do you prefer Vista or XP.

Shit-can it!

My first experience with it was last week. A friend of mine, who is an older gentleman, bought a brand-new computer. There were a lot of key programs which weren't already loaded up onto it-- so he wanted those, and his settings selected. Even though he is a supervisor for GM, he is very computer illiterate, and unsure of what plug ins to download manually.

Well, I get over there, and OMG!!! Vista is like fucking Chinese, as compared to XP!! I tried to download programs, and almost every time, they were FIREWALLED!! I couldn't even get Adobe or Microsoft products past the firewall to download (you have no idea how many times I hit the Control key with Enter, trying to bypass it), and couldn't figure out how to change the settings to do so!! Not only that; the prompts were weird, the task bar was weird, and it just didn't feel user-friendly to me AT ALL.

This further bolsters my reluctance to EVER use Vista.

i think like anything else its a matter of familiarity with the os the more you use it the more you get used to it I've got 2 computers that both run vista and yes the first little bit was rough but after a little time and what not i've grown quite used to it and its not so bad... it does take a little bit of a newer pc to run because its freakin ginormous but otherwise i think its fine after a little time

I just (2 days ago) bought a new comp. It's got Vista 64 Bit on it. It looks pretty. Dealing with the differences from XP to Vista I can see causing problems for some people, but, the main problem I'm having is that nothing runs on it yet.

There's tons and tons and tons of software that is not yet compatible with Vista. Not to mention device drivers for all the USB plugin devices (if they aren't brand-spankin new).

The operating system just seems to be ahead of the software and I have to wait for things to get made for it. Vista 64 is one of the only operating systems that can handle more than 4 Gig of RAM. Mine has 6 Gigs. So if I want to take full advantage of my hardware I'm stuck with Vista 64 bit. (XP will only handle 2 Gig. Vista & OSX can handle 4.)

Other than that though. I can't complain.

XP, like all 32bit OSs, can address 4GB of Ram. XP, like all 32bit OSs, can not use all of it for the OS or applications. Hardware needs address space too. Say you have a video card with 512MB of Ram, it needs 512mb of address space. That means your 4GB of ram just got reduced to 3.5GB that the OS can use. Need an AGP appature for graphics? Set that to 256MB like most people do.. and you now have 3.25GB of Ram the OS can use. Keep in mind that network cards, sound cards, USB controllers and all other manner of hardware need Memory address space to function.

The average XP based pc loaded with 4GB of ram can use anywhere from 2.5GB to 3.5GB of that ram. The same can be said of just about every other 32bit OS in the world.

BTW... 64bit OSs are limited to 4 Terabytes of memory address space. Though, MS has put artificial limits on Vista. Basic will only see 8GB of Ram, Home Premium will use 16GB of Ram and the other (Ultimate, Enterprise and Business) will see 128GB of Ram.

Mac Pro intel 2008 spec@ lowendmac.com

Amateur graphics performance comparisson Uses a mac pro with 12gb

Apple's Mac Pro link

RAM: 2 GB, expandable to 32 GB using pairs of 800MHz DDR2 ECC fully buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM) RAM in 8 slots.

Intel macbooks/pros, and imacs are limited in ram due to the power restraint/slots available on their boards, though there are hacks on the new books to address 6gb in 2 3gb chips. The mac pro series can use up to 32gb. The one I ran with 16gb saw and addressed all 16gb.

Back onto vista: Only seen bits and pieces of it myself. Though the frustration I have seen with my attendings dealing with it had us rolling for a few minutes in grand rounds. I have to be proficient in XP and OS X due to the job, and the hospital will not allow a vista machine into its network yet.

None of those links work.

Does it say if they are using a 32bit OS or 64bit?

If it's a 32bit, how do they get around the fact that a 32bit OS only has 4GB of address space?

If they are 64bit, it's a moot point, as all 64bit OSs can use more than 4GB of ram.

OS X Leopard is 64 bit.

I like it now, much better than XP. You can do so much more, imo, and it seems to have more security measures to protect your system. It takes a second to get used to, but is just as easy as XP when you get the hang of it.

Complaints: Takes more RAM to run, and since I have a gig and it takes about two for Vista to run properly, mathematically speaking, that just does NOT add up.

Pros: It's not XP. I hated XP, it was my least favorite version of Windows to date. I also like how with XP it sorta makes you figure things out again, that's the reason I don't go with, say Mac, it's fool-proof. It's like they made it specifically for the mentally handicapped and old people, it's not challenging at all, I like a challenge with my OS...keeps things exciting, I don't need my intellegence insulted by a Mac .

I love how making an OS that works is "insulting".

...this is the only inter-webs capable computer I have ever OWNED...SO...take it with a grain of salt :stuart:...

...but I am digging on the Vista (came standard)...it is really not that hard...a caveman is doing it (O_M_G does the input stuff so I would not know too much about that)...& I ACTUALLY LOVE the firewalls...(keeps the 'puter healthy).

I do plan to get a mac laptop togo with my musical rig..

...(highly recommended by many other (trusted) musicians for "ease of use in live recording")...

Plus you can put XP/Vista on it if you wanted to. In fact you could put Linux on it too.

They make it way incredibly easy, for people that don't know computers. I know computers enough to have never had a problem with any version of Windows that I couldn't fix in under five minutes on any of their operating systems starting with 3.1 when I was 8. So Windows works also...if you're not computer illiterate. So...I guess I'm too smart for Mac? I always laughed at my Aunt's Mac piece of shit that would crash every five minutes and had HORRIBLE specs (yet was HORRIBLY expensive and years behind it's time for the price even though it was their top model) while my copy of Windows '98 was running as smoothly as can be.

I remember my aunt always went with Mac and I was ALWAYS so pissed at it. It's like being in high school and having your parents force you to take your little brother to go see some little kid movie . It's kiddy stuff to me.

But to each his own, that's just always been my standpoint on Mac. I didn't even like it when I was 11 because I thought it was "too easy".

My experience is mostly the opposite. The "Challenge" of Windows was keeping it from flaking out all the time. Some people just want to do thier work or have their fun without constantly fucking around with things. And I'd dare say that OS-X is more techy then Vista. It's basically UNIX under the hood and you can dive into Terminal and tinker to your heart's content if you want.

It looks like I started the Armgeddon of Mac vs PC which was not my intention(how come every time I post a topic people start fighting what am I the fucking plague?) My old corporation I ran(LPC Corp. 2000-2004) only dealt in Windows based machines and thats all they taught my in college too. My tax id license has long since expired(I dealt OEM software and PCs) and Dell took the market over massively even over HP with their no frills support.
