Computers stores in the Detroit area

Recommended Posts

I need to pick up an adapter to convert a standard 4-pin power connector to an SATA power connector. In the past I might have gone to Comp USA or one of a couple other large computer stores. None of them exist around here anymore. What else is there? All the stuff listed in the Yellow pages seems like tiny repair places that are unlikely to have this part. I want it tomorrow so getting it online doesn't help.

Ideas?

Did you try Micro Center? It's at 14 & John R. They usually have a bunch of stuff and the place focuses on people who like to build their own machines and do their own upgrades and shit. The place is HUGE.

I didn't see them listed. I remember the place. Is it at 14 and J.R. or closer to the highway?

Yeah, I was going to say Micro Center.

Seems like just about every place else has dried up and gone away. I know of a few mom and pop shops but most tech savvy people do their buying online. I'd really like to open a 24 hour computer store (for when you just HAVE to have a new power supply) etc... but most people who would need to go out and actually buy hardware would probably keep some extra handy just in case.

Since CompUSA left Grand Rapids a few years ago, I do all of my computer shopping online at Newegg. They have good deals, cheap and at times free shipping which is a big plus if you have big bulky items. I got all of my computer stuff and my wide screen tv from them.

Yeah but I thought they took away all their physical locations. If you're going to shop online you might as well check out pricewatch.com and woot.com can be pretty neat sometimes as well.

Yeah.. micro center rox. That's where I usually go for all my computering needs, and it's not that far away.. :drool and I can drool over computer nerds there.. but all ninja stylez and stuff.. :goth phade:

While I do love Micro Center I can't stress the importance of shopping at the "mom and pop" shops. The little guy needs our business or he goes out of business. Even if it might cost slightly more the staff usually know WAY more than the big chains. Micro Center's tech department is a joke, and don't even get me started on the "geek squad" (I mean how the hell do you put the processor in SIDEWAYS? IT'S KEYED SO YOU CANNOT DO THAT!)

If you were in the downriver area I could direct you to Strategy One computer store in Southgate. It's a mom and pop type of shop. They carry parts, refurbed systems and do repairs. Their prices are good. The there is Parts Paradise. He does the computer shows but you can call him to see if he has a part and go to his store in Reford to get it. His prices are also good. I'll post his number as soon as I find it.

Fry's and Fry's electronics are a bit different although probably part of the same corporation. The standard Fry's is a grocery store, which in Michigan is called Kroger. :)

I had no idea, but he was talking about the electronics store. We're both huge nerds like that.

I knew that... Not the nerd part, the electronics part... Just thought i'd throw in some useless trivia... Like as an example Fry's grocery and probably Fry's electronics will carry Kroger brand batteries...
