the eternal
The top one is: om mani padme humThe bottom one means "living" or "life" Thanks! new ink is good. Almost all of bean's tattoos have a personal meaning to it. These two in particular have a good amount of depth and levels to them as well. I hope what follows doesn't come off as too pretentious. It's not meant to be. bean simply is not one to go on and explain everything, whereas I... well you should all know by now the way I speak. MEANINGS OF THE TATTOOS (abridged version) 1. Bean's love for me and the coming together of beanternal On the surface, it was devised as another way for bean to declare her unity with the eternal (that's me! ) She follows Buddhist teachings, hence the Buddhist mantra om mani padme hum, and since G-d apparently picked me as one of the chosen people, a Jewish word-Chai is below it So, a Jewish phrase and a Buddhist phrase, side by side, just like us BUT WHY THOSE TWO PHRASES? That brings us to tattoo reason number 2. Each phrase holds importance to bean and to the respective religions as well THE TOP ONE--om mani padme hum It is the the most famous mantra in Buddhism, and it has many meanings It is most commonly known as a phrase which invokes the embodiment of compassion As a therapist, bean's main goal is to be the embodiment of compassion for others And she views this phrase, and Buddhism as a whole, as a guiding force to live life the right way and to bring inner peace to herself and allow peace to others She doesn't always feel comfortable proclaiming herself a Buddhist as her fatalistic worldview and unending dry sarcastic wit are not quite what Buddha intended ---although they make me love her so ). But underneath that dark soul that I adore is a gentle heart that longs to achieve enlightenment, even as negativity threatens to overtake both of us at every turn. ---------------------- THE BOTTOM ONE-Chai (pronounced "hai", as if your hocking up phlegm, not enjoying a sugar-filled tea or saying hello) It just means life, but in the Jewish faith, that's everything. The Torah is viewed as the tree of life. We sing songs about life in just about every holiday. And every Jew on the planet, and Elvis Presley for some reason, has purchased a Chai necklace at one point in their life. This simple word reminds us to keep going regardless of the setbacks and to always cherish our lives and celebrate our time here. The most popular phrase in Jewish culture "L'chaim!" which means "To life!" has chai right in the center 3. The two phrases compliment one another, just as we do As we strive together to leave behind the negative forces in our lives, the meanings of om mani padme hum-embodying compassion and chai-(celebrating) life, compliment each other and serve as a unifying force to move forward just as the two of us coming together in matrimony has done. I love my bean water
