Well... I went.

I'm glad that there is some where for people to go and have a good time, however...

I was there for around 3 hours.

In those 3 hours I heard:

3 Manson songs

4 Ministry songs (off the same album)

4 Prodigy songs (I believe the majority were off the same album too)

2 Zombie songs

2 Rammstein songs

1 Depeche Mode song started, in the middle was cut off to play a NIN song, then played a Rammstein cover of Depeche Mode, then played the Depeche mode song that was playing when it was cut off to play the NIN song.

When I got to sit down with the person responsible for bringing the DJ's in, I was sorely disappointed to hear things such as "you're beating a dead horse" and "I bring 70 people in each week" and "You three are the only ones complaining."

It's GREAT to have a DJ that will play customer requests, however it is also great to have a DJ that mixes in stuff that people will come up to them and ask what it was (hey, isn't that how people get introduced to new stuff?!) If you're going to have a DJ that plays nothing but requests, why not just put a jukebox in and make some money?

I wish you the best of luck, and I do hope that people continue to support you, I just don't think the night is for me.

**edited to add that I reiterate that I do not wish to see this night die, I want the scene to flourish and for people to have some where to go.

1 Depeche Mode song started, in the middle was cut off to play a NIN song, then played a Rammstein cover of Depeche Mode, then played the Depeche mode song that was playing when it was cut off to play the NIN song.

Well in his defense that song he started was for the Draconian show. Apparently he thought they were ready, or just started it on accident, and either figured out his mistake or someone from Draconian told him to stop it.

I for one was not impressed by the DJ, and in fact left before close which is rare for me.

There were also a bunch of other people complaining besides myself, damagedangel, and DJ_Moondancer. Aquashoes Dave wasn't very impressed, neither was Todd (both ex Mephisto's DJs), Anthony/DJ Nocker and his friend Joey were also not impressed at all.

I realise that most of these people are DJs themselves, however this is why they complain. The general public doesn't know when the DJs screwing up, nor do they care that much. Drunk people in a bar also don't care about sound quality, which is why I hate them so much. I want people with standards who appreciate and are also there for the music.

I get that he's doing techno and alternative and other things too, good for him. That's not what this is about. Playing the same band (and even the same song) twice in a night is frowned upon (there are a lot of bands out there to choose from) and should at least be spaced out near the beginning and end of the night. Doing it within the same hour period is a huge no-no (at least not without a nice $20 tip going along with it, which is the minimum I'd do that for personally).

The DJ also couldn't keep a constant volume level. If you start a song and it's quieter than the last song, you turn the gain/volume up, likewise if it's too loud you turn it down. There were times I couldn't hear myself think and then it would seem quiet when it went to the next song. Also DEAD AIR IS NOT YOUR FRIEND! I know I've been guilty of that but the night has never been packed when I've done that either (ok ONCE, and I thought I had plenty of time to get back downstairs. Moral of the story is leave someone behind to press play, just in case).

I will give him props for using Traktor DJ Studio 2 + real CDs, which is a lot better than DJ iTunes was. At least he's actually working, or attempting to work.

Apparently he's been doing this for 15 YEARS too. If so then why does he still sound like he's new at this then? He's got NO EXCUSE for the sound. Springer was better than he was, and he pulled the same stuff (same bands all night long over and over).

They did have the concert system going which did help with the sound, a lot. However they also used the DJ/Radio system as well which if you were by the bar would sound like galoping horses because of the time delay of the bass in the concert system and the high end of the DJ system. The concert system also has more range than the DJ system so you'd hear things you wouldn't hear in the DJ system either. They could have also turned down the DJ system (or even left it off) for people to talk in the bar area.

Yes they do have an air-hocky table, and a test your strength punching thing, and one of those things you hit with a hammer and a weight goes up to hit a bell. However they got rid of the dart board (which a lot of people liked and I knew three people who used it weekly when I was there) and they probably could have used that money to replace the DJ system's blown speakers.

70 people a week? I didn't see 70 people, so where were they this week? How much repeat business is there? (that aren't friends of the owner/cybertrybe/draconian/staff and aren't getting in free for whatever reason).

Other than that the night was awesome. They had fire breathing, suspensions, Draconian Productions was there as I mentioned earlier doing some stuff, some grinding sparks I saw from across the bar. They had a camera and were broadcasting it on the net (I told them they should hook it through the T.V.s there like I used to) and I had a BBQ chicken pizza that my friend ordered. I saw some people I hadn't seen in a while and others that I havne't seen in AGES.

However I'm not going back until they get a new resident DJ, or the current one learns how to DJ properly. I do give lessons BTW, although I shouldn't have to, it's not like it's hard.

I hope the night does succeed, I'm just telling it like it is, as always.

Incedently I know a bunch of other out of work DJs that would be perfect for the night who actually know how. I will give this out upon request.

Correction: I didn't HATE the music. I liked every song he played. However, I didn't feel the need to hear that many songs of one band in that short amount of time, that is what disappointed me.

no i'm just confused thats all, if a band does nothing but play music they like and a handful of people do not like it after or during the show politely tell them to mix it up i would of told the dj that but you r right there were alot of repetition that night i don't think sean was too impressed by it either

Seriously, I don't know why they bother to leave the house anymore. Well, except maybe to let me watch, even if it is just the warm up :wink

I was getting ready to go to bed last night and IceQueen said, "Wait, you don't have to work in the morning? Then I'm kidnapping you and taking you out." So, I was Kim's date captive last night.

I saw a Draconian show over a year ago down in the Labyrinth that was very well done. It actually impressed me and that's hard to do with fetish shows. But last night, I was severely disappointed and that's hard to do with fetish shows too. Oh well ... I enjoyed the company I was with and got to see Gimp do a suspension which, as a general rule, I don't watch suspensions. Not my thing. But, gotta support the peeps and all.

Well, here's my two cents for what its worth.

First of all, our count through the door fluctuates, and has been good for only being open for 5 weeks (not including the 2 weeks we weren't open for the holidays) and we anticipated a low door count last night because it being the first open night after NYE which is always the case this time a year but neither the less, there was still a decent crowd there and several people even commented that there were more there than we or they anticipated. So I'm not to worried about last nights count - as long as its more than we thought there would be, we're fine. It has been 60 to 80 people and I would say that a good half of who was there were repeat guest.

As for the DJ... I can't help to bring this out... that which you all already brought out - it was all DJ's complaining or saying they could do a better job. Ya see, I'm not just a guy trying to run a night at a bar, I'm also in a band which most of you all know. This is very similar to what I've seen bands do when they go to a venue and watch other bands. "Oh man, he screwed that solo up"... "man, I could play circles around their drummer".... etc! Hell I do it. When there is someone performing and doing something you also do - you automatically start to critique them and find everything bad about them instead of relaxing and having a good time and getting into the spirit of the night.

Circus Obscene isn't about the DJ and it isn't a dance only night. We have acts and people performing and it is meant to be a mixture of lifestyles, acts, music and people with a foundation of Industrial Goth. Some people were calling it a "Goth Night" and just yesterday I had to correct some people on Myspace calling it a "Techno Night" .... God, that is the last thing we want to be called.

Now don't think I'm not listening - I did say if anyone had some complaints that they should let me know and I will ponder on them and weigh the pros and cons - but I will also say, just as was said last night, most of what was being played was requested and our DJ goes with the flow... we've had some nights that I heard more Techno because the crowd kept wanting that, some nights its more old school Industrial and some nights you have people wanting to hear more main stream or harder driven music mainly because of the activity going on out on the floor and stage. The majority of the crowd has stated to me and others that they like our DJ and last night was the only time we have had any complaints and that was from DJ's. The majority of the crowd are not DJ's and had no complaints. Now from a business point of view, you weigh the pros and cons. I'm certainly not going to fire my DJ if only 1 out of 5 nights we had complaints. I am going to speak with him and I am definitely going to tell him that I don't want friends of his hanging out at the booth begging him to play song after song by Ministry which is what I think was going on last night. And I did notice too much being played by Ministry and Prodigy. So don't think you're alone. I don't think I'm gonna even give any thought to 2 Zombie and Rammstein tracks being played - we're open for 5 hours. 2 of each in that amount of time to me isn't even something I feel should be a complaint.

You also need to understand that most of the time we have guest DJ's coming in. And they have their own playlist they do which may be completely different than the norm here at CO. So far it's been great. And, I invite you all to book a night and come in and do a set or two. That's what we do. We try to provide a place where instead of you being hidden nameless in a booth, you can be placed in the limelight and show people what you got. You never no... you might be so good that we may tell ya to come back as a regular the next week.... but I have to see it. As for activity and acts - last night was slow compared to all the other nights and again, mainly because we anticipated a smaller crowd and were trying to limit saving it until we we're gonna have a bigger night. More people came in and we had Nizzle do more than he had thought he was going to do. Normally we have 2 to 3 people suspensions and fire breathing all through out the night.

As for the seconds of dead air well that was a mix up with Draconian's act and when that Depeche Mode song did come back on - its because that was the song Draconian was doing their act to. Nothing is scripted or rehearsed and sometimes we have seconds to get something right and that was just a glitch but certainly not worth the attention it got in fact I can't believe I'm even on here explaining that considering what kind of night it is - that will happen from time to time. I was not aware of the bar speakers being on until 2/3rds though the night - I personally don't like them either and will demand they not be turned on again... that pissed me off too.

No disrespect towards you. As you know, I know you all at a somewhat personal level and was very glad to see you last night and hope to see you again, not as a paying customer but as a friendly face but... I think the complaints here are a bit overboard.... warranted and listened too but overboard in their context.
