I'd say try to find a used Honda, Toyota or Hyundai (any asian car), but since those cars rule so bad many owners don't want to part with them (my first was a 2001 black Hyundai Accent, beats the shit out of my ghetto American yellow Cobalt).

If you are looking used, first place to go would be Craig's List, swear to god. People on there can sometimes be crazy-low with prices, Raven has sold three cars at top dollar that he got from Craig's List for like $400.

When you do find a car in Auto Trader, Craig's List, etc, make sure you bring someone with you that knows about cars. Not sure if you are suave with automobiles, that's why I suggest that, so they can check under the hood and listen to it before you purchase!

Good luck, Cupcakeserz!

I have a few Honda's, old but they still run strong. Also a caddy hearse I am trying to get rid of. Umm, a second Vespa which I know is not a car but cut some holes in a box and you got a good car. All of these vehicles will be sold for cheap...but they are in Wisconsin and I only go back there for concerts now...and knee surgery.

Also, remember that sexy cars as a first car is general a very bad idea. Insurance for first time drivers is through the roof, at least until 25(?) then the start to go down *if* you have nothing on your records.

Red bright, bright colors should also be avoided. There is a reason it is called "Radar Red" or "Arrest Me Red," as you are a target. And for the love of all that is holy, avoid neon colors as well for the same reason.

...is it a yellow Vespa?

It has been a dream of mine for a few years to own a yellow Vespa. Not that there's any particular anime that happened to influence this .

What's your budget?

EDIT: What are you doing with it? Do you have a lot of stuff to carry? Do you carry lots of people? Do you need to go of road or otherwise need more rugged capabilities? Do you want stylish or practical... or both? Do you have lots of money to pay for gas and insurance?

I'll recommend more specific models when you answer the questions but in general I would say that all new drivers should get a cheap old car that they don't mind getting into a fender bender or two with... because the odds are, it will happen. Make your mistakes, THEN get something a little nicer.

*Starts singing "Ride on Shooting Star"*

Great, first pancakes, rope, and burlaps sacks. Now Vespas, goggles, electric guitars upside the head, and things popping out of my forehead.

Sorry, blue Vespa covered in punk stickers...so I guess its not really blue anymore. I don't see how any show, no matter how cool, would make you want to ride on a noisy banana. Yeah, the name that Vespa uses for its yellow is "banana yellow". I could easily get you one...but I would charge and extra $5 and a large bag of cat food for the oddity of the thing.

Could be worse. I was forced to drive a 1978 Ford full-sized station wagon. Cream yellow. With plastic wood panelling. Made me hate all large vehicles as a daily driver (though I will rent for hauling stuff.)

And people wondered why I didn't get dates in high school.

BTW, it was a terrible, vile, and miserable car to have as a starter car.

The next one in line got a newer compact car (with help of the parentals.)

Get a manual transmission, preferably Honda cuz they can take the beating, so you can learn and never be stranded anywhere. Go for front wheel drive. You want something small, relatively maneuverable and endurable. I've had my Honda for ten years, 150,000 miles--she looks like shit, but I loves my Sparky Herald, III. Also, get an ugly and/or ordinary color, blue works; cops don't notice you as much. I got pulled over in my purple car all the time.
