"LET THE RIGHT ONE IN"

January 23 - February 1, 2009

(Sweden/2008-directed by Tomas Alfredson)

"Movies about kids have usually concerned either the littlest among us or those working out their differences with adulthood. But this new film – which shares with Stand by Me an appreciation of the 12-year-old state of mind – lurks in a dark, brooding territory, inhabited by people both haunting and terrified: tweens. Let the Right One In is, in the basest of terms, a vampire flick. But it's also a spectacularly moving and elegant movie, and to mentally stuff it into the horror pigeonhole is to overlook what is at this point the best film of the year. From the cool cinematography to the intelligence and subtlety of the script by John Ajvide Lindqvist (adapted from his novel), Let the Right One In executes all the right moves technically, and another director might be able to emulate that. Capturing its considerable soul is another thing. The horror aspects toy with the audience's existing vampire knowledge… unkindness is evil, and overstatement a sin, in Let the Right One In.” -John Anderson, The Washington Post

In Swedish with English subtitles. (114 min.)

I noticed this film a couple of weeks ago, and have been geeked up about it ever since. I will be attending the 9:30 showing on Saturday, as it is the only one of the 6 showings that fits into my schedule. The lineup at the DFT looks fairly impressive this season, and I believe I shall buy season tickets for the first time...

Anyone in the area needs to see this film.

I wont get to see it out here in the boonies til 2/8, but I'll be driving an hour and a half to see it.

The book is SO GOOD.

You shouldnt miss the film.

Thanks. I'll have to track down a copy of the book.

I'd go if I were still around. This movie has such a beautiful title. So I would see anything with this name. Fuck vampires: they're boring. I would still like to see it though.

The vampires in this tale arent really boring, and much of the point in the story is that the humans are far more inhuman than the vampire.

Unfortunately, I didn't make it out this afternoon to see the movie. So, I plan on going next Saturday for the 9:30 pm showing. Is anyone interested in meeting there? There would still be plenty of time to head to CC afterwards.

The movie comes out on DVD in March, but it will be nice to see it on the big screen.

Absolutely!

It was wonderful.

I seriously want more foreign fiction now......

Another great disturbing/horror writer I've discovered? Natsuo Kirino. Wonderful book by her called "Out". Absolutely stunning writing. Really hit me. The woman gets under your skin.
