A 48-year-old Wichita woman is accused of prostituting her 5-year-old daughter, and prosecutors say it wasn't the first time.

Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston on Friday sought a judge's permission to introduce testimony from two of the woman's grown daughters, who said she sold them for sex when they were between the ages of 8 and 14.

When the mother goes on trial, however, the jury will only hear about the 5-year-old. Prosecutors say a man the mother knew for years paid her for sex acts with the child.

Sedgwick County District Judge Greg Waller ruled this week that testimony about the 5-year-old's older sisters won't be allowed at trial.

Waller said the stories of the older women didn't meet the strict guidelines set by the Kansas Supreme Court for introduction of prior bad acts. Prosecutors said they were trying to show a pattern of behavior.

The 48-year-old mother and her friend, Reggie Stafford, 51, are charged with multiple counts of rape, sodomy and aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

The mother, who is not being named to protect the identity of her daughters, is also charged with aggravated child endangerment.

"This is a weird case," prosecutor Christine Ladner told Waller during Thursday's hearing.

"The sad facts are that (the mother) was the supplier of sex acts by her daughter to the defendant Stafford," Ladner said.

The adult daughters told Waller during a pretrial hearing Friday that they didn't want to testify against their mother.

In court, a 23-year-old daughter denied having sex with Stafford. But a social worker said the woman reported two years ago that she did have sex with Stafford, starting when she was 9 years old.

The woman changed her story in court Friday, after visiting her mother last week in jail.

"I can't testify against my mother," she said, crying. "I can't do it. I'm not doing it."

Her 25-year-old sister said she came forward when she found out the 5-year-old was going through what she had endured.

"I wanted to get it off my chest so I could go on with my life," the woman said, but she added that she was reluctant to testify against her mother.

She said she was 11 when her mom began taking her to see Stafford. The woman said she heard Stafford ask her mother whether she would bring over her other daughter, two years younger.

Defense attorneys Brad Sylvester and Sarah Flint said allowing the testimony would unfairly prejudice a jury.

"There's not a shred of evidence, just words coming out of her mouth," Sylvester said.

The key witness in the case is now 7 years old. She testified in a previous hearing that her mother took her to see Stafford on several occasions, where he performed various sex acts with her.

In return, the girl said Stafford gave her mother $6 or $7, which her mother used to buy alcohol and cigarettes.

The mother has claimed that she has a drinking problem but that she never allowed her child to have sex with Stafford.

Stafford has denied having sex with any of the girls when they were underage. Police said he told them he had sex with the middle daughter -- the one who denied any involvement with him -- after her 18th birthday.

Trial is set for March 2.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — A Muskegon Heights woman was sentenced Monday to 12 to 22 1/2 years in prison after authorities said she used a written contract to arrange for her 15-year-old daughter to have sex with the woman's boyfriend for two months while she recuperated from abdominal surgery.

The 41-year-old woman, whom The Associated Press is not identifying to protect her daughter's identity, in April pleaded no contest in Muskegon County Circuit Court to three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt but judges treat it as a guilty plea at sentencing.

"What you've done to your daughter is one of the worst things I can think of," Judge Timothy G. Hicks said at the sentencing hearing.

Authorities said the woman agreed to the arrangement because she feared losing her boyfriend, Michael Fitzgibbon, while recuperating from the operation.

Fitzgibbon, 37, was sentenced in March to up to 15 years on each of four counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct after prosecutors said he, the woman and her daughter signed the contract.

Fitzgibbon was also sentenced to 12 to 25 years for each of two other cases involving first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges involving a 12-year-old girl. He is serving the sentences at the same time after pleading no contest to the charges in February.

A Connecticut mother was arrested and charged with providing her two daughters, both under 16, to a 48-year-old man to use in a child-sex video, the State Police said on Tuesday.

The mother, whose name the police asked be withheld to protect the children's identities, was the second person arrested in the case, which has been under investigation for more than six months.

Investigators said they had identified other victims and expected to make more arrests.

The police said they began looking into the case after getting a report stemming from a raid in Japan. ''A digital video taken from the seizure of a computer in Japan depicted a man engaging in sex with two minors,'' the police said in a statement.

That video was first discovered by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The group, based in Alexandria, Va., found clues that the video might have been made in or near Hartford, and they alerted the local authorities.

The Connecticut State Police computer crimes unit, working with the Hartford Police Department and postal inspectors, took up the investigation, and on Oct. 10 they arrested Ismael Cohen, 48, of Hartford. Also known as Jose Luiz Sigourney, Mr. Cohen is charged with two counts of employing a minor in an obscene performance. He is suspected of producing the tape that featured the woman's children.

On the video, the man having sex with the children had distinctive tattoos that police officials said had helped lead them to Mr. Cohen. The tattoos included the name ''Ismael'' on his left hand; a heart, pierced with an arrow and the initials ''U.S.M.C.'' on his right hand; and a knife through a globe with an anchor on his left biceps, according to a state police report.

He used several names, and the police are still trying to find possible associates. Mr. Cohen lived in a basement apartment in a multifamily house on Hillside Avenue in Hartford, the police said.

The police said that during the investigation, their biggest concern was that Mr. Cohen would be tipped off and flee. In fact, he was arrested one day before he was scheduled to fly out of the country, a police official said.

Lt. Jose L. Lopez Sr., who heads the Youth and Family Services Division of the Hartford Police Department, said they suspected that Mr. Cohen had made other videos with more children. ''The investigation has revealed that there are other victims who have not been identified,'' he said in a statement.

The mother will be charged with putting her children at risk, employing a minor in an obscene performance, conspiracy to commit sexual assault and promoting prostitution. Her children are in the custody of the state's Department of Children and Families.

Mom sold daughters into prostitution, for car, report says

OKEECHOBEE - A mother is accused of selling a 12-year-old daughter into prostitution and trading a 14-year-old daughter for a car.

The 39-year-old woman, whose name was not released to protect the girls' identities, was jailed on two counts of aggravated child abuse and two counts of sexual performance by a child.

The younger girl and her mother were living out of a car and the prostitution was for food and an occasional shower at the men's homes, according to a report by Okeechobee County sheriff's Detective K.J. Ammons. The younger daughter is three months pregnant, the report said.

The older daughter refused to be used as a prostitute and "was sold to a man for a Mercury Cougar," Ammons said. "But he never gave the mother the vehicle."

That 23-year-old man has been charged with sexual performance by a child and jailed.

The younger girl told detectives her mother pulled both girls out of school for fear they would tell someone.

"She said she was a good student and made A's and B's, and all she wants to do is go back to school," Ammons said.

Both girls have been turned over to the Department of Children and Families, which will enroll them in a new school, Ammons said
