MAKING MUSIC

...I was far to clear on what I wanted to do with life...that is a rarity..& made me very happy....

..there were many tunes of a darker mood that I needed to "fix & change"...expand..finish..

.....I bought new equipments...

.....learning HOW TO INSTALL these new equipments has driven me to a very dark & frustrated place in my mind......SO..if I get to happy when I figure out these 100 buttons (& how to make them dance right for me)........I can just go out & buy some new shit I have only half a fuckin' clue how to use...like a mini-moog perhaps....I know..it's an expensive majik trick..but I bet it'll work..

..now..I found THIS trick on accident...(& feel lucky to have seen this silver lining)...

TELL YOUR TRIX OH MEISTROES OF THE DGN!

Examples:

How to sing/perform a song (live or on $ studio time) depressively/angerly when you are in a good mood

How to sing/perform a happy tune (same deal) when you are in a crappy mood

How to change the moods seems to be a very important part of the "act" if you will...

...let us all share our trix with each other...

Well, now I have thought about it...although I still don't think this is going to help. How would you describe your vocal style? You've heard me, so you know I only do melodic vocals. I've never had a problem finding the place from which to sing a given song because the melody (especially the phrasing, although the actual notes have a big hand in it as well) leads me there. I don't know how one manages in, say, Industrial, death metal or any other style where the vocals aren't strictly melodic. Maybe it's acting, maybe the sound pulls the singer in. Hopefully, someone else who works in a similar style to yours can provide better advice.

Well...in the example O_M_G is putting forth...I was entirely sane one day...(I had reconnected with OLD family-friends)...& I was to record a very melodic, very sad part..that borders the crazy places that prolonged depression can exacerbate...SO..I could not sing the song...AT ALL.....

My friend's Mom (know as Mom, 'cause she's kinda' everyones Mom..you know the type)..SO..she sais, "What..you..are TO SANE...shit...just have some sugar..you'll be bouncin' off the walls in 5 minutes!" (she knew me a long time ago before I started managing my diet)...she was MOSTLY right...I had some coffee (with white sugar instead of honey)...'bout 15 minutes latter...

*RAWR*

..yeah...acting...that helps...I use acting to act like I don't have stage fright...that's part of why WHY I host poetry (for practice)...

....SO..you don't have to "switch" moods in the middle of a set / show (I know you do longer shows too).

Truth is - I can just step in and out of the recording process I've been doing it so long.

I don't have nor need to psych myself up or be in any kind of mood cept the mood to work.

If I'm too tired or too busy it'll just have to wait.

...yeah..I know some guys like that...they get to the party...plug in..tune up..& say, "Play the beat!"...& they start playin' along like they were IN A BAND together & it was dress rehearsal at M. Square Gardens... :p:X those dudes ROCK!

Good musicians can always get together without having rehearsed prior and find common songs they all know and be able to fall into a groove.

If I get together with two or three other musicians and we pick songs we all know then yea - things fall into place. I've done it before and often those times we would end up playing no less than 20 songs we never practiced together before.

It's a kind of 'magic' feeling to run through a set of songs that way and, I also find that the first takes are the best ones because you don't think about it you just do it. I have a box of old cassette recordings of these moments sitting at home.

There is beauty in zen moments.
