High Cholesterol...Natural Solutions Wanted

Well...

My doctor's receptionist informed me today that they have to call in a script for Zocor. Actually, this is the first time I've ever had blood taken and got this kind of news. I know I have to eat low-fat and fat-free foods. I'm aware of the healthy things that I can do food-wise. I want to know what ELSE can be done.

Are there natural remedies? Suggestions?

Bleh...

I think a lot would depend if you have the hereditary kind or the food caused kind of high cholesterol, or both is possible too.

Be wary of some of the lo-cal and low fat foods; many substitute for the natural fat flavors with more salt and other additives that can actually drive up your cholesterol. Other than trying to minimize the dietary contributions of meat and dairy and then consuming the healthy fats and fish in small quantities, I understand that some whole grains and foods with high fiber content, like oats and flax and some kinds of beans, can help with that.

Just eat food. That is what I do. My lifestyle is called unhealthy by many but just because I am eating "junk" food doesn't mean its bad. You can eat whatever you want...but eating it right is key. People that swear by organic foods and low-fat/cal foods may be onto something...but alot of times that stuff doesn't work. You actually have to eat those kinds of foods differently than you would other foods. Your body reacts differently to them.

Try walnuts...three ounces a day. One ounce a day can also help if three seems like alot. However, this does not mean that nuts should be added to your daily intake...rather, they should replace other things. These nuts will give you 25% of your daily calorie intake so you can munch on them all through the day with three light meals at regular intervals.

Yoga or aerobic exercise...a one hour walk a day helps alot...and that is only required for 5 day out of each week so you can really spread it out.

Use Benecol and Take Control, they are two margarine substitutes that will really help too.

Black tea is easy to do and really helps

Olive oil! Use it! Some people replace their butter with this. Dip your bread in it...mix in some seasonings and put it on your salad or other foods.

And you probably know about oatmeal already. Plain oatmeal with real cinnamon. Cinnamon is also known to reduce cholesterol...even if its not by much.

Even with all that, never shange the way you eat...just alter it a little bit. Slowly substitue things. Even if some foods are bad it can be a pretty nasty shock to swear off them all at once. Maybe I just buy into the mental part of it a little too much but that is how the health center in my town teaches it and they have always done a good job.

I agree on the cheerioes thing, and they come in some yummy flavors now. I've been having the same problem and now I have cheerios or oatmeal for breakfast.
