(CBS/AP) An 11-year-old boy shot his father's pregnant girlfriend in the back of the head while she was lying in bed in their western Pennsylvania farmhouse, then got on the school bus and went to school, authorities said Saturday.

Jordan Brown was charged Saturday as an adult in the shooting death of Kenzie Marie Houk, who was 8 months pregnant, Lawrence County District Attorney John Bongivengo said at a news conference.

Brown, the son of Houk's live-in boyfriend, was charged with criminal homicide and criminal homicide of an unborn child, Bongivengo said. He was being held in Lawrence County Jail.

Police say the shooting took place Friday between 7 and 9 a.m., reports David Hall of CBS Station KDKA in Pittsburgh. Police say that Brown shot Houk in the back of the head at point-blank with his own 20-guage shotgun, Hall reports.

The fifth-grader was picked up from school Friday by Pennsylvania State Police, who found Houk's body after her 4-year-old daughter told tree cutters working nearby that she thought her mother was dead, Bongivengo said.

The boy had told police there was a suspicious black truck on the property that morning, causing investigators to look into a false lead for about five hours, he said.

Inconsistencies in Brown's description of the vehicle led police to re-interview the victim's 7-year-old daughter, who implicated the boy in the killing, Bongivengo said.

"She didn't actually eyewitness the shooting. She saw him with what she believed to be a shotgun and heard a loud bang," Bongivengo said, adding that the weapon was found the boy's bedroom.

The shotgun is designed for children and such weapons do not have to be registered, Bongivengo said.

You know I grew up around guns, hell I learned how to shoot when I was 6, but what with this kids father thinking letting his son keep a 12 guage in his room. You lock that shit up when it's not in use.

Technically it was in use :D

I had handguns and ammo lying around the house with almost gay abandon. Dad showed us in no small demonstration what a wad-cutter would do to a body, or even a gallon jug of water. We were taught better

Exactly, proper gun education is key. It's stories like these though that make every anti-gun nut get their panties in a bunch and start pushing for more regulation and bans. I mean if it's from the back of the head he could have just as easily crept up behind and slit her throat or stabbed her in the back multiple times, twisting it in her lungs so she couldn't scream. Then they start banning knives except for people with a chefs license.

thank gawd for that...sheesh ya had me worried.

back on topic...we always had guns and ammo in reach of kids in our 'hunting' household.

My mom almost got her leg blown off because my bro was cleaning a gun in the house and he thought the chamber was empty

he got the cat instead. It sucked. REALLY sucked.

Whenever they charge kids as adults in cases like this, I can't help but think: ... if, let's just say, I had sex with this kid... everyone would be raving about how he wasn't capable of giving consent, blah blah blah. But he IS presumed to be capable of premeditating murder and fully understanding the implications of his actions. Just seems hypocritical to me.

12 gauge is bigger which means the shell holds more buck/birdshot. Also, a 20 gauge doesn't have a much recoil as a 12 gauge.

And thank you for correcting me.

Ah...so shotguns & piercings get filed together...oK

....so it is oK for a kid to own a 20 gauge...nut yeah..it SHOULD be locked up when not at the range.

It was considered a "youth 20 gauge" why the father didn't lock it up is beyond me though.
