Movie Recommendation - I'm A Cyborg

Recommended Posts

My roomie and I were flipping through On-Demand last weekend because there is no such thing as good TV at 6pm on a Saturday. We came across this movie in the independant films section and the title caught me so we gave it a shot.

It was remarkably and surprisingly good. Korean film with English subtitles about a young woman is sent to a mental institution after slicing open her arm to run an electrical cord into her body so she can 'recharge'. While at the institution, she stops eating (because the food will gum up her cyborg parts). A young man in the institution who thinks he can steal people's souls (played by Korean pop sensation Rain) takes it upon himself to convince her to eat before she dies, and the two fall in love.

Parts of the movie are shot from the perspective of the girl whilst in middle of her delusions, so there are some great scenes of her going into full kill-bot mode.

Given the setting (mental institution) and some of the plot elements, you may be saying to yourself "But bav, isn't this a downer movie?" And the answer is a resounding no. In fact, if I'm ever institutionalized I want to go to one in Korea.

Overall, the plot was a little simplistic, but it was a great film to watch randomly. Very pretty, and while there's not the level of special effects or explosions that we Americans might be used to, the subtlety of the special effects used was fantastic.

I now want my own Korean cyborg to hug and cuddle and to name George.

Check it out...again, it's available through ComCast On-Demand in the Free Movies section under the Sundance Channel.
