Need to borrow: Jackstands or Wheel ramps

Recommended Posts

It looks like I am going to have to replace my starter in my car to get it working again. I need to borrow a set of jackstands or wheel ramps to get the front of the car up high enough for me to do the change. If someone has either one of these things, please let me know.

Well if I were closer to you I'd say you could use mine.

Otherwise I'd say if nobody else has a set of jackstands then you can try Autozone. They usually rent out tools like that at a reasonable price.

Also, assuming you have a scissor-style jack that came with the car, you can try just using that to jack the car up, and using something small and sturdy to place under the frame in case said jack fails. I would suggest an old tire rim, maybe a cinder block or two? The main purpose for you to utilize a jackstand in your scenario is to prevent failure of the jack and you getting crushed to death by a 2 ton car.

So, what I would do, is make sure the car is on hard ground (pavement not gravel or grass), jack it up, place something solid underneath near the jacking point or on the frame or engine crossmember, replace the starter, and there you have it.

Also, are you sure it's not the starter solenoid that is malfunctioning? And not the whole starter? That could save you 100 bucks. And it's the most common problem with starters.
