ok so there is this new theory...life started in africa which makes us all decendant from...well...blacks.

Then there were neadrathals...on the planet at the same time...in europe...and we probably bred with them.

doesn't this make whites the INFERIOR race? sorta...? I mean, if you had to name one...not that any race is, just saying...you know.

:wink

oh and I hate how pronounciations change....ok? that pisses me off.

Shcools of fish instead of schools...

Neadratalls instead of thals...

What else...the pronunciation of that planet...Uranus. You’re not going to change the joke by changing the pronunciation. fuck you. scientists, or whoever started that...all my elementary teachers couldn't be wrong...could they?

what does toilet paper and the USS ENTERPRISE have in common? They both orbit Uranus looking for Clingons. =P

..theory not that new...new evidence pushes it WAY further towards PROOF ;)

..whilst there is definitive proof that neanderthal & homo sapians co-habituated (even families would live in the same cave)..they traded goods..fought..may have even co-mingled ("married" or "paired") but the scientists say that we were different RACES (non-compatible DNA)...Negroid & Caucasian & Mongoloid...ONE RACE..thank you that is all.

...it is only Americans who lazily mispronounce the German "th" that is a "t"...

The only question I have is...why do people care? What will it all change? Will it do something great like help the economy and cure cancer? What is her doing there? Standing! I can see that!

Sorry about the Monty Python bit there...but I honestly can't figure out any more questions...there seems to be very little to gain from all the time and money spent on this crap. BURMA!

Neadratalls instead of thals...

I think that is the standard british-english way to pronounce it. At least all these BBC documentaries I watch pronounce it that way. Along with some of the other things you mention there , are UK vs USA ways of pronouncing the same things.

"Shedual" instead of "Schedule" for instance. In the documentary world, per-capita the UK destroys us in terms of scientific interest on the public level, many of the people that work on American documentaries are English.

Quoted for truth. I'm almost thinking HH is fucking with us there. *fear*

Different species that is. "Race" is sort of a squishy term that denotes something like a sub-sub-sub species (there is no actual human subspecies, unlike a lot of other animals, like you were saying, at least I think you were) which are able to inter-breed with the other "races". Comon now, we all watched the finale of BSG!

In the grand scheme of things very little is spent on "real" science, unfortunately.

Science is the bedrock on which applied science (aka technology) rests. Pure science produces wellsprings of information that while difficult to predict, lead to some of the most profoundly "useful" ideas we have. That is if we wan't to say that discovery, for the sake of discovery is not worth anything in and of itself. (Which I can understand, not agree, but understand.)

Something like the history of all mankind, even if it didn't lead to all sorts of offshoot tech that we benefit from today, (which it has, indirectly helped almost every science I can think of in one way or another) is a pretty earth shatteringly relevant question to me. Its got to be at least as interesting as "whats your favorite band" or some such. I'm not saying you should need to agree with me, just stating my opinion. Without such things, all the advancement of the human condition in terms of its "well-being" health wise or governmental wise wouldn't have anything to peruse with that health and safety.

The favorite band thing is a good point. But, I tend to live with the idea that the here and now, and also the future are what is important. We already know enough history to keep ourselves in check, we just have to use it. Honestly, even if we knew more about our past very few people would use it as a tool...very few today use what we already know as a tool.

All I see this doing is widening cracks between people. A huge discovery will come up and what is the first thing that most people will do? They will blow it in the face of anyone that didn't care or though the opposite was true. Once people stop using things that they learned as a weapon against others I might change my view...but that will never happen. Also, every few years or so some "big discovery" is proved "false" by another "big discovery" and it keeps going on like that. It is like we are slowly dusting off a giant statue and we keep throwing stupid guesses as to what it is every time we uncover an inch.

We don't need to change what we know...he have to change how we USE what we know...or we will stay divided. And here I sit, saying that evolution is wrong and that creationism is wrong...go ahead and send me to links or long papers because they all still have holes, even tiny ones, and we will never, EVER know what truly happened. Really, technology is great but it will never tell us the true diet of our ancient ancestors...and even if it could...whoopie! Now what...

I understand your point, and I agree with the sentiment of doing things that are "useful". I think its the underlying idea that we are miscommunicating or misunderstanding on. That lets call it "fundamental understanding" that we "use" , itself is not necessarily accurate and needs to be open to constant revision. Otherwise, we run the risk of being totally wrong and never realizing it , as we didn't bother to re-check our facts. Then we go ahead and build this whole structure on a foundation of sand, that was wrong to begin with. Knowledge is, its true, an ever-shifting thing and all we can hope for is to get closer to "the truth" , not necessarily ever getting at the absolute truth , unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how we look at it.) <--- is that where the period is supposed to go? *ponders*

As I bow to Troy

As long as people are interested in it, other people will talk about it. The same way that people always talk about their cars. I don't give a shit what kind of tires or engine someone's car has. But other people do. That's why it is their interest and not mine

..pretty much what I'm sayin'...species is a better word..like chimps are apes (so are we & Neanderthals)...we can't breed.

...I hate "race" as a word period. I think it is SO outdated..

honestly I just want Uranus to be pronounced your anus so I can keep telling one of the only jokes I can remember...

the race thing...well...humans are all one race since we CAN interbreed.

at least thats how I see it dunno if 'cave' man and 'modern' man had enough common dna to breed but I am starting to think so...

Now birds...thats a different story. =P

We could just use the term "population variation" or some such rather than "race" as its become politically inflamitory in many realms. But, the term is distinct from "species", "race" is not an older term that means the same thing or a replacement term, it has a very different meaning. Species = the specific animal we are talking about. Race is a term having to do with some sort of variation within that species. For example even the most oblivious, politically correct person in the world can tell that descendants of European populations almost universally have different physical characteristics from populations with (relatively pre-archaic lets say) Asian or African heritage. They are not different species, they aren't even different subspecies (we are all of the Genus/Species/Subspecies: Homo/Sapiens/Sapiens) but there are population variations, sort of "proto subspecies" commonly referred to as "races".

Why does this matter? It matters for communication sake since both terms are used constantly. Its nice to know what someone means when they use a word rather than just having to guess. Neither the term "Race" or "Species" are going away anytime soon.
