I need an advice

Hello!

I'm new here. I've been browsing tons of forums for an idea of what to do. I was laid off from my job about 3 month ago. I've been looking for a job since then, but did not even get a single interview. I worked as a web designer for a publishing company for the last 5 years. Looks like www.detroitgothic.net is an active forum with active members and may be someone has some experience working as a freelance web designer. May be "Other Stuff" category is not the most appropriate for this question, but I want to try anyways to get some opinions before I go ahead with my life. I'm wondering if it is possible in the current economy to find work for a freelance web designer and make enough to pay for rent and groceries. I was able to find a small project on craigslist and I developed a website for a company. It was a small project and took me only a week to complete. I got paid $800 for 1 week of work which is not bad. Please people give me some ideas. I have 2 kids and my wife is out of work as well. Thank you in advance.

Can't help you with the web design outlook, but as far as jobs go I'm piecing together a living myself doing a bit of this and a bit of that and so far it's working out. (Someone once told me if you need $1000 with freelance things it can be a lot easier to earn $100 10 times than $1000 once). Think of every single thing you and your wife know how to do -- typing, web design, dog walking, anything at all and that should help you make it till things look up or a job comes along. I know of someone who took an old van, had a nice looking logo painted on it and turned it into a portable pet groomer/dogwalking business and is making way more doing that (concentrating on affluent neighborhoods) than the job she had before.

GREAT IDEA FOR PASSING!

...landscaping season is coming...APPLY FOR THOSE JOBS..keep looking for something better in the mean time.

..shit...you may get a job with a BIG landscaping company that needs a web guy...then you can do that over the fall in between lawns & snow...

..out of all my friends qualified to web design or network administrators...there are like 3-4 ACTUALLY working at those types of jobs...this is (as I see) because about 6-8 years ago...to many peoples went to school for these jobs. There are only so many of them. I think that computers is no longer a "real job" ..as now know more musicians that make the money with music, than I know computer peoples makin' a livin' pressin' buttons (data entry aside.)

I wish your family the best of luck; & many blessings.
