Soon-to-be-jailed MSU running back remains on scholarship

Recommended Posts

East Lansing -- Suspended Michigan State running back Glenn Winston will remain on an athletic scholarship while he serves a six-month jail sentence for two misdemeanor assault convictions, coach Mark Dantonio said.

"By NCAA rules he's on scholarship," Dantonio said before Thursday's practice.

Winston, a Detroit native, is expected to report Friday to the Ingham County Jail after he pled guilty last month to assaulting MSU hockey player A.J. Sturges during an altercation at an off-campus residence last fall.

The freshman is suspended from the team indefinitely and isn't listed on the Spartans' spring roster.

If Winston remains on the team and eventually gets his suspension lifted, he could receive a redshirt for his sophomore season upon completion of the jail sentence if he remains on course academically and gets approval from Dantonio.

NCAA rules allow student-athletes the opportunity to fulfill four years of athletic eligibility in a five-year span.

Winston, 19, is expected to receive academic tutoring for his classes while in jail and is expected to undergo 24 months of probation once his sentence is completed.

They've got to be fucking joking, because if they're not I want to see the students of MSU riot over this.

This is what they do for people in sports. One kid in my auto class is here full ride for the football team...the guy didn't even know where the spark plugs were supposed to go on a Viper head and he is passing the class with an A. It is truly bullshit but what can be done about it? It's not like they raise tuition for others to allow these guys to go for free...oh wait, they do...
