TitsMcGee
Quote Kelly and her mother A 10-year-old schoolgirl suffered 70% burns after a 16-minute session at an unmanned tanning studio, it has been revealed. The child's mother is now demanding that all unmanned salons are shut down as a matter of urgency. Kelly Thompson was taken to hospital a few hours after leaving the tanning shop in Port Talbot, South Wales. Medics at the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery, where she was treated, were horrified at her condition. Had she remained on the sunbed for another two minutes, they said she would have needed skin grafts. Kelly has now been warned to keep out of direct sunlight for up to 10 years. Her mother, Sharon Hannaford, 34, said the incident happened during the Easter school holidays. "I gave Kelly some money to go to the fair with her cousin but when they got there, it was closed," she said. "As they came back, they saw the tanning salon and went in, more out of curiosity than anything." Mrs Hannaford said Kelly spent £8 feeding the unmanned sunbed. "When she came home, she laid down and didn't feel too good and I noticed that she was a bit red in the face. "Over about the next three hours she became really red and was feeling cold, although she was burning up. In the end I had to take her to hospital." The story emerged on the day the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued new safety guidelines governing sunbeds. The HSE is advising that nobody under the age of 18 should use such tanning facilities at all. It also wants all tanning salons to be supervised by trained staff - even if a salon is all coin-operated. Who the hell lets their 10 year old roam free which a bunch of money? And gee I wonder why the 10 year old wanted to tan when her mother is slightly orange.

mantindome
This is natural selection at it's finest! I would feel bad for the little girl, but at 10 you should know tanning is extremely unhealthy.

Children do what they see the adults around them doing, and just take a look at the mom. Also, keep in mind this is the UK... there is not the awareness of the dangers of sun exposure that there is here or in Australia, because there simply is not enough real tanning weather for it to be a major issue. This is a CHILD... children this age, no matter how bright or well-raised, do not yet have the capability to consider all the consequences of their actions... which is why adults are responsible for guiding and protecting them. Homicidalheathen
why is a 10 yr old worried about being tan? why is ANYONE worried about speeding up melanoma's? Stupid. But yah I heard a few stories about bad tanning bed experiences. People should just embrace the awesome pale gothiness.

Thank you, once again, for being a voice of reason and concern, in a board increasingly gone mad with the Ayn Rand philosophy of everyone for themselves and and who ever isn't at the top to go fuck themselves. jynxxxedangel
Apparently, these sorts of tanning places usually do have attendants, sitting in a booth behind glass; but my husband says they often have their noses buried in the Star Magazine (or another such tabloid)..and aren't paying that much attention to who comes and goes. I believe HW said no one under 16 is supposed to be admitted. If this is the case, the attendant should be held fully responsible for this little girl's burns. If there was an attendant there, they most definatly should. I also believe that the girls mother should be charged with neglect or something for letting her 10 year old just wander off by herself. We don't even let kids do that up here anymore, and I'm hours away from a big city.

Hey now...10 is the approximate age that kids are let to run around on their own for a bit (you know..whilst mum tries on that REALLY sexy unders for her date on Saturday night. There are 10 year olds walkin' around my neighborhood on their own. So yeah...I think CHARGES would be kind of extreme. I hope that all of you being so harsh won't have some such problem if/when you breed. (OR..maybe you need it..to teach you tolerance.) Tits...do you have any understanding at what NEGLECT is? NOW...where should she have educated her child? When she said, "I have to go tan." (apparently more weeks than not)...& I just KNOW the 10yr-old asked "WHY?"(How do I know that? Head Wreck
i remember going down to the local forestry (read formerly the worlds largest munitions factory) on pushbikes from about age 8 with my friends of similar age. we were wise enough to know what to do out and about before the days of cellphones and GPS tags. it was called a childhood. we went out and explored on our own with our parents knowing our whereabouts, be it the old factory, now a leisure/forestry park or up the old valleys around the remains of 18th and 19th century coal mines

Coal mines? ..now I have been thinkin'...remembering walkin' to school at the ripe age of 6 & a half (in '82)...over a mile (there were uphill parts both ways but mostly on the way home.. .no snow..it was always hot though)... I would not let me kidd walk anywhere in this day & age though...not till he has his purple belt's black stripe. (Many awareness lessons in this portion of training.) Even then, I would not let him go far. 'Certainly not walk to his school.

Our Race is LOOSING intellectual (& common sence.) Yeah I was going to say, only a REALLY unneccesarily overprotective parent is going to tell their 10 year old that they can't go outside without them (imo a bad parent because their kid never fully learns to cut the apron strings and always will believe they have some false sense of protection through their lives, imo). Any parent who doesn't let their children go out by themself reads the news too much and is also partly responsible for the paranoid atmosphere that is all over the world now. This was in Britain also, not Detroit . I could see if a mom let her kid wander off into the Hoods of Detroit by herself at age 10, but then again, I go down to Detroit and see little kids walking around all the time, so there you have it. I was allowed to ride by bike to Metro Beach everyday in the summer there and back by myself, with money in pocket and completely unsupervised, which was around a 17-20 mile bike trip total. I always came back one piece and unscathed because momma didn't raise no foo. Edited May 4, 2009 by Chernobyl
