With a subject like this the stats get skewed unfortunately. The people that care will click yes, the ones that don't wont even bother to vote. So you'll end up with like a 20 to 2 vote in the end probably on any given pet subject as very few people actually care about the "structure" of a website consciously. Did these sort of things a lot in the ancient times on the old board, and have read a lot about the structure of forums on the admin websites and such. Not that there is anything wrong with the idea, just a straight vote will be flawed as it doesn't take into account all the other factors involved in keeping a place active.

The main problem with adding any new section is that the existing sections aren't all that active (save Other Stuff and "The DGN forum"). Another forum would just be that much less active. I personally would like several new forums about pet subjects I like, but they'd be ghost towns. A well known problem with online communities is having too many sections and no one bothers to check them as they have so little activity. If we had a consultant come look at the board professionally they would probably suggest cutting DGN down to like 10 sections or less until the activity was higher. You'll see a lot of forums on the internet with tons of sections but only any actual activity in a few of them.

The best way to do it is to stare at what actually gets posted in "other stuff" (or wherever) and try to figure out what is the most common subject(s) that get smoothed together in there, and then have a nomination or some such based on actual activity.

I've actually thought about consolidating a few forums. The overall board activity would have to pick up to justify splitting' the party any more. Once there was say 1000+ posts a day it would make sense to split out certain subjects that now might fall under existing ones. (currently we range between 300-500) Nothing stopping anyone from making posts about whatever subject they like. Does raise the question something like "what subject is currently talked about a lot that should have its own forum rather than being lumped in with other subjects." as an open question. Which would hopefully include research into what actually is talked about, rather than just the loudest voices about say "Troy's Favorite Subject."

A suggestion here; perhaps, since it would not be practical to start an entirely new automotive section, we could have a pinned thread (devoted entirely to motor vehicles) in the Current Events, Science, Spirituality, Politics, Religion & Sociology section?

Just a random thunks.

a question for the petrolheads:

why do motorcycle cops around here get issued such (pardon the term) faggy bikes?

Haven't seen a motorcycle cop here yet. Most of the ones I have seen are usually on Harley's or a Honda Goldwing. What do they drive here?

Yes there should be. I'm embarking on another truly stupid and expensive quest to make my car faster and more dangerous than it is currently. I'd be happy to elaborate if anyone cares to listen.

So, will there be discussion of the novel Doble designs in this section or will you strictly limit yourself to that contraption that Mr. Ford has put on our roads?

Steam engines are awesome. And I think Dobles probably fit into the definition of "Car". Or maybe "vehicle" would be more appropriate since we're already discussing motorcycles in this thread.
