What Are You Thinking?

I just saw a commercial for a product that used thousands of grams to unnerve people. They could have simply posted that after 7 days of not having regular bowel movements, you can have nearly 9 pounds of dung blocking up your guts. Since most people's diets are based on pound loss, this info would draw more customers for their product.

I'm thinking it's interesting how the majority of all science fiction "fantasy" based movies have become reality and it worries me that soon we might actually have to start paying for air...

Hey now this is my kind of topic! Things are getting scary in this country. Back in 2004, when I went to WyoTech, was the first time I heard of OBD III system provisions. "They" (They being the automotive industry, politicians, environmentalists, etc) were discussing, at that time, how they were intending on putting a "black box" of sorts in vehicles with OBD III. On Board Diagnostics II is currently the most common "computer system" in cars today. OBD II is great because it allows the entire powertrain to be controlled via a computer system. Everything from engine RPMs, fuel delivery, air delivery, exhaust emissions, even transmissions can be closely monitored and controlled with OBD II. It's like a universal computer system that every vehicle since 1998 has come standard with.

Now, with OBD III.. They literally wanted to come up with a system that could be remote-controlled.. Let's say, for instance, your O2 sensor goes out on your vehicle. This would mess up readings to the computer, and thus result in excess emissions from your tailpipe. Let's say you live in a county where emissions testing is required, where they require catalytic converters, etc.. They want a way for your car to communicate wirelessly, and it could be anywhere, say you're driving down the highway, they could have wireless access points to scan your car. Let's say you have had a check engine light on for the past 3 weeks due to the O2 sensor being out. Well, your car, with this new system, would literally be able to report that information to the proper authorities and thus earn you a ticket for failing to maintain your vehicle. Hell, let's say you decide "I'm not paying that ticket, screw this system!" Well, give it a few more weeks, and they could literally disable your vehicle.. You may wake up for work one morning to find, "Oh no! My car won't start!"

Yeah, let's give the government MORE control over our personal movements..

Here, more recently, they have been talking about taxing people for their MILEAGE! Another great "perk" to OBD III. They can digitally record and transmit your mileage to the according agencies and now you have another fantastic "system" of control. This bright idea has taken such popularity, that they are even considering making a "black box" to be installed on older vehicles that won't already have this technology. For newer vehicles, however, overriding this system would be highly cost-ineffecient as the whole OBD III system would have to be replaced in it's entirety.

Just some food for thought. I think you may be right, though.. Tax for air is probably not far off.. They want to tax for miles, for emissions from your car, tax for carbon via "smart meters" on every home in America, etc. I could go on for days about how things are headed in this country (and the world for that matter).

__________

Now, I'm thinking: "Damn, I need to get back out to Colorado soon.."

I'm thinking, wow, my how your comment takes me back. I was studying transportation when, what we called the "brain box" was becoming standard on then "newer vehicles" and a certain group was trying to get funding for the "black box" idea for the automobile at the same time another group was developing "hands free" technology for vehicles when entering and exiting the freeways to eliminate rush hour traffic jams. Then I ended up working in the automotive industry where the latest OBD systems where being tested, modified and added to all fleet vehicles as the factory standard before distribution...I was living sci-fi!!!

Yeah, I can imagine. One of my instructors at WyoTech used to be on the board for the Society of Automotive engineers.. He was this really old guy we called Father Time. He knew *everything* about the automotive industry. He was one of those guys who you could ask any random question about any car and he would know the answer. You could ask him why your 1974 Volkswagen Dasher has a stuttering sound when you make left turns, and he would go into explicit detail of how "Well, Volkswagen, that year, for whatever reason, decided to use a smaller sway bar in the front~" etc. etc.

His real name is Jon Danielson. He was the best teacher I ever had, and I would kill for an 1/8th of the knowledge that man had.

Anyway, he was one of the instructors there that used to tell us about all this stuff. Over his career he worked for several major automotive companies as an engineer. The amount of "big brother" crap they are trying to put into cars these days is ridiculous. Not to mention new cars these days are crap. Sure, we have come a long, long way, in safety, fuel consumption, etc. But Jon told us his days as an engineer ended around the time when he was sitting in a meeting at Ford, and the topic (as per usual these days) was how they could reverse engineer a water pump so it would cost less and not last as long. They actually figured, that since a certain car usually ended up in the junkyard after 8 years, but the water pumps still lasted 12 years, they figured they should reverse engineer that water pump so it would only last 8 years as well..

This is the problem with the autmotive industry today.

And now I'm thinking, well, another random story complete. I hope old Father Time is still around, he was a great guy. :pimp

The purple Monster punch tastes like grape bubblegum, its a little too weird for me to ever buy it again and my stomach is a little worse off for drinking it.

Actually, your comment makes me think I can't wait for it to hit my area...I gotta try that... :chug

I think it would be nice if studios could go back to making real "made for TV" movies. I get tired of the same story line of a bunch of teen with a mixed bag of attitudes yelling at each other while lost in the forest running from danger....it's like the SyFy channel's cookie cutter approach to "scary" movie making...

...If they are going to keep this up, they should just run Mystery Science 3000 in an infinite loop and call it a day

I am 34 and still can't process the fact my dad was a bank robber...damn I am thinking too much this morning and afternoon. Maybe after I get my masters degree I will write a book to try to inspire others how to get out of their personal hell and kick the shit out of life. I think people may mistake me and think I want sympathy or pity...I don't. I only have one purpose for being so open and candid...I want to inspire people to defy obstacles, labels, and destroy the odds, fuck stereotypes, and prove society and the boxes we are told we belong in are misconceptions.

Hell yeah. I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Maybe not an actual self-help book, but an account of my life so far, and what decisions NOT to make :D

I guarantee waking up to this bright white IP Board will get your eyes working quick as you try to process what the San Juan Hill you're looking at...

(I think the only good thing about the IP Board is that it loads faster...small consolation for going blind :hrhr: )
