Ninjas

OK now, I have met 3 people who claim to be ACTUAL ninjas.

Is there a revival of this movement or something?

Ninja certification school?

I hear there is a form of jujitsu (don't know if I spelled that right) that is combined with something else that is the closest you will get to the real ninja training.

My argument is this:

You can't be an actual ninja. You can say you are...you can pretend you are...but you can't BE ONE.

That time has passed, they are all long since dead...and you’re not an actual ninja. It’s like saying I am part of Attila the Huns army. You can't be! They are all dead!

Ninja's were assassins...how many people have you killed?? (please, if you have, don't answer that honestly....)

And...do you have invisible powers?

I thought someone on here might know

If someone is to say to me I am a actual ninja what are the qualifications....and where do you train....for how many hours a day?

Thanks.

There has been a revival going on for about 15 years...there is a school in Atlanta.

My Sensei (4 school black belt) is in to that...they have a DVD & everything.

I'll try to remember the exact name of it...I don't think ju-jitsu is the right word.

If a person tells you they are a ninja...they suck at being ninja.

If they say there are such things as ninjas...they are full of it..there is no s on ninja...there is 1 ninja, or 10 ninja.

Nin-jitsu, is not a word at all (that I have heard of).

My good friend/sensei teaches ninjutsu in Arkansas. His dojo is quite well-known. He was born Welsh, and raised in Japan for most of his life, by a very old and well-documented family.

This guy is for real, trust me. I will give the link to his dojo's page, by PM, if anyone is interested .

tiajitsu = 'body war' or 'body warrior'

They train with everything as a weapon...including but not limited to: a belaying pin, giant mallet (the kind the circus used for puttin' up the tents in the old days), swords, canes, bo staff, fork, 'chucks, si, shuriken, & even a pencil!

I guess that peoples use the word ninjitsu...I don't think it is an old world word though.

Years ago there was a school in Detroit that taught Ninjitsu wich is the martial art practice of ninjas. Their will always be the practice but no true ninjas. Its rather obsolete in todays times. You can study the way of the samurai but you will not truly be a samurai. Or a viking, gladiator or anything cool like that. The 80's really made some unrealistic movies about what Ninjas can do. They are people and dont have special powers.

This must be newer because nunchuckas were not invented untill the 20th century.Again some B movies lie to us.

The 'chucks are a newer weapon for sure...with no time honored kata to it.....& I am to understand that it is first sighted in the 17th-18th century..there are continuing debates.

Thats because most think that its a relative of the flail. Most historians agree the the true chucks werent made untill the 20th century. Bruce Lee was the first to make them widely known and that was in the early seventies. Ninja never used them.

I have been studying ninjitsu for over 20 years now. I have a black belt, 1st degree working on my 2nd degree this fall. I am also an instructor in the art. I am also a student of Chen style Tai Chi, and have taken shotokan, tae kwon do, and a little kung fu. My degree or certification is recognized by Stephen Hayes who brought the art over from Japan and Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, 34th grandmaster of ninjutsu and holder of most of the lineges from different schools in Japan. And I didn't just pay to get my belt, I earned it through blood, sweat, and tears. Ninjas are very real. A modern day ninja isn't going to tell you that he or she is a professional assassin. Do we recieve the traditional training that ninjas recieved in feudal Japan? The answer is yes. Ninjutsu though is like a sponge. The modern ninja absorbs information and training from the best schools, weapons, etc. It is a way of life. Do we wear black masks and climb around on buildings at night? :) maybe sometimes... Do we train with weapons? yes, many actually. Can we make explosives, poisons, etc? Some can. A ninja seeks to be a survivalist and information gatherer able to adapt to any situation. There are many so called schools out there claiming to be ninjas and thats ok. Are some assassins? I would say probably but it's not openly discussed in martial arts schools because many schools these days have kids classes and promote a family environment. All martial arts are great learning tools, one isn't better than the other. It is hard to define what a real ninja was or is and that is the very essence of a true ninja. I know many who practice the art but aren't ninja. I know some though that really are the real deal and they have mad martial art skils. There are special elite groups throughtout the world Seals, special forces, FBI, SAS, etc who come to our teachers and seek this kind of specialized training. We do not enter competitions with this art. The head schools of ninjutsu that are out there are based around the following: Stephen Hayes, Tanemura, but especially Hatsumi. I haven't personally met Hatsumi yet, but am a personal student of Mr. Hayes. Beware what you see and read on the net about the ninja. A lot of it is misinformation spread on purpose. The ninja are masters of disruption and misinformation. Most ninja are extremely loyal to their teacher, dojo, etc. I have a vast library of resources on the subject of ninjutsu so please feel free to ask questions and I will tell you what I can. I would honestly say that out of all the people in the world who practice ninjutsu, maybe 10-15% really use the art on a day to day basis. There is an excellent historical reference on the history of the Ninja by Stephen Turnbull. Hatsumi and Hayes books are also exceptional. Stay away from Ashida Kim stuff, it is purely crap and is considered a joke by serious martial artists. The closest thing I know of that compares with ninjutsu would be Krav maga in philosophy. in other words, there are no rules in a real life confrontation. I hope this helps

Rev,

check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninjutsu for defintions on the characters.

The word ninjutsu/ninja, etc actually means many things in Japanese and in Chinese characters as well. A person doesn't suck at being a ninja becasue they tell you they're a ninja. Most people don't take a person seriously anyways when they say they are a ninja. And for the record, there are ninja out there, I can honestly say this from personal experience. Do they fly though the air? No. Do they do supernatural things? No but that is the trick of it all. they have techniques and tricks that can make people think and see that they do have supernatural abilities. They are masters of deception. Is it like the movies? Some of it is and some of it isn't. The fighting scenes in movies, no. Usually, if a jninja was going to kill you, you'd be dead in your sleep or they would get you were you felt most comfortable and safe. The weapons? Yes but I dont know any ninja that use nunchucks. Most shuriken or throwing stars sold in the star are not real. I know one ninja who does make them handmade. They are heavier and very sharp than the cheap shuriken in the stores. Other shuriken include an assortment of throwing spikes, needles, and other blades. Those that are particularly skillful really don't need weapons. The smoke bombs and all that is called forgive my spelling mitsubushi. It is an artform of mixing various things together to produce a result. Also, many should remember that many ninja were renegade samurai or ronin.

this wasn't meant to insult your intelligence so I apologize if it did.

....so....If I wanted to take out a hit on someone....I could walk into one of these schools and maybe drop a few hints?

Just kidding.

No really I am kidding.... :shuriken:

THANK YOU for answering that...I guess there are ACTUAL ninjas or as actual as they can actually be.

And there are real pirates these days as well...

I stand corrected and won't laugh next time someone says they are an actual ninja...instead I shall demand a demonstration of the skill. :jamin

my pleasure, I dont find it insulting when someone laughs or pokes fun at the ninja. Im comfortable with it. Real practicing ninja are rare though. and many dont know this but some ninja during feudal Japan days were pirates and vice versa. And if Im out and about and you see me, feel free to ask me any questions about the ninja. I am always happy to show some fun tricks that we can use. There are bunjikan schools in Michigan that teach ninjutsu. There is also Quest Martial Arts in Ann Arbor that teaches To Shin Do which is still the ninjutsu taijutsu fighting schools but modernized for today's society and self defence. For example, stances have been slightly altered for some defences because we generally wouldn't be wearing battle armor in a real life confrontation today; but some ninja did wearing pieces of armor when batling samurai. To Shin Do is Stephen Haye's system which is still ninjutsu. Remember, if it's not Hatsumi's bunjikan, Stephen Haye's To Shin Do, or Tanemura's Genbukan, it's probably not real ninjutsu. The lineages that have been preserved today were taken from the Iga clans. There are supposedly some Koga ninja left in the world but nothing has ever really been confirmed to be true and authentic. But Hatsumi is "the man" and his teacher Takamatsu is the one who all of our teachings in all the schools has came from.

hope this helps

Yes, most everything could potentially be used as a weapon. Ninja have their favorites of course but anything could be used. My wife has used an umbrella. Our instructor used a plastic grocery bag and a shoe in a demo before. For the ninja to be invisible, they would use metusbishi, I'm still not sure if I spelled it right. Anyways, this was usually a small egg with a hole cut at the top. Inside, they would fill it with pepper, flour, and sometimes poison, blinding powder, etc. It would be sealed with wax. When a ninja would attack, they would break the egg and fling the powder at their enemy's eyes, temporarily blinding them. Then they would have time to get away or disappear. Ninja traditionally used to wear clothes that were grey, dark blue, or a dark red. This would also help with blending into the surrounding environments. Mythbusters did an episode were they tried to also debunk ninja walking on water. I dont know what they did wrong in their construction of the water shoes, but I have seen ninja wear them and be able to walk on water or rather a sort of gliding effect.

We spar all the time and use vocal statements or tapping to ensure safety. we also use a lot of training practice weapons, particulary during sword training. Real quality swords are extremely sharp and dangerous. The kusari fundo or chain with a weighted ball at the end is also dangerous. I know from personal experience that getting hit upside your head can easily cause a concussion if not properly executed. We also use practice knives but the newer ones are very realistic. We also do gun training.

so...is part of the training, learning to use ANYTHING as a weapon? Say...this speaker on my desk for example.

*cauze that is waaay cool, like pirate ninjas...argh...then turn invisable* =P

Does anyone ever spar and do that...grab anything?

You know, to keep in shape for anything.

My wife is the deadliest female I know. She has knives or blades of some sort hidden everywhere in our house and even on her. She kicked the crap out of 6 guys in a demo at school one time. She doesnt go out to the clubs. She's all about martial arts. i dont know what the hell she's doing with my sorry ass:) She can also do flips. She also punches very hard. She said she wants to be like that mma chick Gina Carano. We beat the hell of each other for fun all the time. Ah true love...
