Forced sterilization..

I'm curious.. Forced sterilization for people who have repeat abortions,too many children to care for, OR "insert reason here" ...

Would you be for, or against it, & why?

Well my belief is that people really need to take a test and get a license before they should be allowed to breed. Also women who get abortion after abortion because they are too dumb to use the pill or condoms. And finally women who spit out like 8 kids with 8 different men, who live off the welfare system and don't even care about getting work.

As for men...if you have like 8 kids from 8 different woman and you refuse to support them, you are so done helping over populate the world.

This is a hard line for me to draw. On one hand, I really think something needs to be done to stop people who are irresponsible (both financially and emotionally) from breeding, but, on the other hand, any type of permanent sterilization doesn't allow for people to change, and is almost certainly a human rights violation.

I could be in favor of forcing a woman who has too many children she is not responsible for to have an IUD inserted for 10 years, with the understanding that, if in 10 years she is financially and emotionally stable, she can have it removed and try to have children again. The problem with that, though, is that we'd be paying for that extra medical care with our tax dollars. Also, there is nothing equivalent to an IUD for men who father too many children without responsibility.

But then I am also kind of leaning towards euthanasia for about half of the world's population as well.

No... only because it would be abused just as it was in the past, when it was used as a weapon against the poor. Maybe if there were some way to ensure it would only be used for, say, people like that lady who kept the little girl locked in the closet all those years. But, like the death penalty, it would be almost certainly be used for (to me) the wrong reasons against the wrong people.

Now, I'd definitely be in favor of it for males like this fuckwit who has 7 kids at my school, by (I think) 5 different women, all but one of whom are drug-addicted prostitutes. Kids are turning out about like you'd expect... extra sad because the three I've worked with are all extremely bright but very troubled children.

Consider, I would suppose, if this was a new talk-show. Would you be apalled if they brought out a man or woman on the stage and an audience of their peers decided if they would be sterile? It's a Maury's paternity results show gone wrong! But, I'm betting it would be more popular than Springer.

Yes, we need this really badly. I am only half joking when I say that large areas of major cities like New York need to be gassed with some sort of agent that kills reproductive organs.

If you can't do the time don't do the crime...couldn't that apply to pregancy and abortions? If you can't handle a child then try a little bit harder NOT to have one...those clips are really cheap now and can even be taken out if you want kids later!

I'm talking about the women who pop out kid after kid (all from different men) that they can't take care of, who live off welfare and refuse to find a job. I think China's one baby law is crap, but with how over populated that country is, is necessary.

I don't have a problem with people messing up their own lives. But having children and barely raising them, much less properly, messes with the lives of the children and everyone who comes in contact with them. It also inevitably perpetuates the poor habits and abuse that these families demonstrate to their offspring. I'm not at all comfortable advocating that we sterilize people but I'm even less comfortable with bringing ever increasing numbers of neglected and abused children into the world.

This is what tears me. I have to respect the autonomy of the individual, and respect the life they choose to lead. However, at the same time, to foolishly bring children in the world without the means to raise them to be self-actualized, thoughtful, contributing members of humanity, really make me want to consider doing something to keep this from happening. If there was some way to lose the Victorian attitudes towards sex and contraception in insurance coverage, so much the better.

Consider: it takes $100,000 average to raise a child to 18 years of age. And it is rising. And a lot of these children are going to cost more than that due to neglect, abuse, and influences of substances some people take.

And yes, I go with guys being clipped. The reversal is a bit easier, and us guys don't have to go under general anesthesia (and associated risks,) or have a major body cavity wide open to have either done.

Sometimes, this feels like the fist hitting my nose on this issue (Your rights end the instant your fist hits my nose.) But the conflict against autonomy rubs me the wrong way as well.
