Last I checked a S&Mr derives pleasure from pain there is no difference from my perspective. I knew alot of cutters that just did it for fun or pleasure. I personally dont mind a straight razor or knife ran across my bicep or abdomen during sex, but I was in martial arts for 17 yrs I learned to derive pleasure from pain since I was 15 long story.

Cutting yourself either because you are looking for attention or have an honest drive to do it is just plain unhealthy and dangerous. Sadomaochism is an entirely different thing.

Im also a cutter, but I dont do it as often like I use to back then, and I only do it for pleasure as well. Me and my roomate did the whole blood brothers thing a month ago.

I've explained this in another thread before, I dont do it for attention and I barely talk about it, only because I know most cant handle hearing such full details lol

Interesting that this is still a fairly "new" trend of the last 15 years or so, can't help but wonder why each generation seems to value itself less and less in regards to how it causes itself pain. My God-Daughter also is/was a cutter in times of duress and in fights with her father. I hated it. Still hate it.

I have done it. I don't do it now.

I have a freind (the one at Miphesto's last Wed) with 3 phsyc degree's or whatever you call it. He is really smart and makes a ton of money. He writes articles for magazines and medical journals sometimes aside from his practice.

According to him, in a humans natural state Ie:, tribal and shamanic...people have rituals and such where they mame themselves all the time. It is a natural way for humans and animals to relieve stress. Obivously with the treat of infection not a smart one.

He had this teen girl who was doing this. (Client only, get your minds out of the gutter). She was so depressed because some of the kids at school found out and were picking on her.

She thus, thought she was a freak and it made her more depressed.

My freind took a very alternative route in his treatment of her. He told her it was natural...showed her some books on the subject and told her how to do it safely. She stopped feeling wierd about it. Pretty soon she was hardly doing it at all...After awhile she just stopped doing it all together, no meds.

He said now she is in a band, popular...making good grades and working. Very well adjusted. NO more depression.

Guess she just needed to accept the fact that she was different for awhile.

I no longer do it to relieve stress. I will use my own blood in a ritual or some other type activity. I prefer needles or some other form of mild S/M B/D with sex.

I agree leslie, but i believe that most ppl that are cutters do so for attention which makes me really sad. Cutting is personal ... I try to do it in places people cant see the scabs or scars. Its good to blow off steam and frustration sometimes but it is very addicting and VERY UNHEALTHY! I just dont see why someone would want to draw such negaitive attention to themselfs. What purpose does this serve? Well other then the fact that ppl that do it for attention are attention whores ... but once again its such negaitive attention. I guess i just dont understand. I feel ashamed and embarrased when someone asks or questions me about them (the scars that is) and i just dont see how someone could enjoy that feeling =( thats just me I guess.

Meg dont worry about it you should be able to be yourself around us cutters. The vial story takes the cake.

I've been a cutter since I was 14 years old. I DO NOT do it for attention. I cut in places that are easy to hide, and when someone would happen to see a cut, I would lie and say that it was from something else. I do it when I have a severe episode of depression. There is a ritual to it. Getting out the blade, sterilizing it, picking a spot to cut. Then during the actual cut there is something almost meditative about watching the blood flow, then cleaning the area and bandaging it up. I would feel better after I cut, almost euphoric. When I was younger, I never quite understood why I cut myself, it was almost a compulsion, which was what made me go into psychology. During my psychology classes I learned why I cut myself, which eventually made me almost stop doing it all together. Unfortunately, when I stopped cutting, I started drinking heavily. Now, I drink very rarely, and in the past 5 years have only cut myself 4 times, though the last time was bad enough for me to get stitches. This last incident was last year and I was going through a very tough time (too long of a story to go into) and cutting was the only thing I could do to ease my mental pain. I understand that this is unhealthy behavior and can be very dangerous. What upsets me is people's ignorance and misconceptions about the topic that hinder cutters from getting the help they need to stop this behavior. I visited a few psychiatrists when I was younger and they did not know how to help me and had all these false ideas about my behavior.
