Who makes the best horror?

Recommended Posts

Im thinking on a large scale and overall over the past few years.

IMO its the French. They have made some damn good ones. High Tension, Inside, Frontiers, Marytrs...

on a side note, I think that Japanese horror is last in terms of good ones, but thats because I just hate J horror. any thoughts?

Fox News.

*high five*

*Drac-pac high five*

...damn. That dates me and my cartoon habits. :X

But in honesty, currently I think the Japanese have the horror right. The US has the market on gore horror currently (Saw series, Hostel, etc.) But I think between The Ring and the Grudge as examples, the Japanese has the mind-fucking-squirm-in-your-seat-pray-for-daylight horror with minimal gore.

I would have to agree with phee... but more specifically... the Japanese really take horror to another level... i.e. Audition One of the freakiest movies you'll ever watch...

I said recent! Audition is from 1999! 10 years isnt very recent... although I like Audition, I own it, although I prefer Ichi the Killer.

Out of American Horror movie makers that are still making movies today... there are only a few who come anywhere close to making good horror movies...

Eli Roth comes to mind,

Rob Zombie seems to have the right mindset, but seems to be missing some of the oomph that old school American horror movie makers had.

Amercian Horror Movie makers that really rocked back in the day:

John Carpenter

Sam Raimi

William Friedkin

Stuart Gordon

Tobe Hooper

George Romero (he is still not bad)

Lucky McKee

The Japanese make much much worse (worse as in more violent and obscene...so better)gore horror than the USA. Saw and Hostel are kinder garden to alot of the stuff out there from Japan, Let alone other countries. Guinea Pig off the top of my head for one (although Guinea Pig isnt recent there are many like it).

Personally, I find Ghost movies to usually be really boring and not scary or visually appealing in any way, which is why alot of J horror, aside from the extreme horror stuff, I find stupid. The only Ghost movie I really have enjoyed was "The Orphanage".

But whatever works for you :) :)

Its Sad that Roth and ZOmbie are what comes to mind for most people... I HATE Eli Roth's movies, they all STUNK! The only thing I really liked from Zombie was "The Devils Rejects". I hated what he did with Halloween.

Guillermo del Toro has made some REALLY GOOD horror IMO Mimic (1997, which is not that recent I realize) was awesome... I also LOVED The Devils Backbone (2001, a bit more recent). He also has produced some good ones, such as the for mentioned: The Orphanage

I really like some of the stuff coming from Europe these days (including France) and The Descent(UK) was amazing.... I heard they were making a sequal, which I believe is a VERY BAD IDEA.

I believe that Cronenburg, while not making traditional horror anymore, still is making very horrifying movies very well.

Right, I was just using Audition as an example.

Ah, gotcha. I am actually trying to get a hold of a copy of Rubber's Lover... I believe its Japanese? maybe Korean, either way it sounds alot like Tetsou: Iron Man and I wants it...
