Grad Sues College for $70,000 Because She Can't Find a Job

Recommended Posts

She has given new meaning to a class-action lawsuit.

Trina Thompson gave it the old college try, but couldn't find work. Now she thinks her sheepskin wasn't worth her time, and is suing her alma mater for her money back.

The Monroe College grad wants the $70,000 she spent on tuition because she hasn't found gainful employment since earning her bachelor's degree in April, according to a suit filed in Bronx Supreme Court on July 24.

The 27-year-old alleges the business-oriented Bronx school hasn't lived up to its end of the bargain, and has not done enough to find her a job.

The information-technology student blames Monroe's Office of Career Advancement for not providing her with the leads and career advice it promised.

"They have not tried hard enough to help me," the frustrated Bronx resident wrote about the school in her lawsuit.

"She's angry," said Thompson's mother, Carol. "She's very angry at her situation. She put all her faith in them, and so did I. They're not making an effort.

"She's finally finished [with school], and I'm so proud of her. She just wants a job."

The mother and daughter live together, but are struggling to get by. Carol, a substitute teacher, has been the only breadwinner.

"This is not the way we want to live our life," the mom said. "This is not what we planned."

As if being unemployed weren't enough, Trina's student loans are coming due, saddling the family with more debt, the mom said.

"We're going to be homeless, and we'll still have a student loan to pay," Carol said.

Monroe insists it helps graduates in their careers.

"The lawsuit is completely without merit," school spokesman Gary Axelbank said. "The college prides itself on the excellent career-development support that we provide to each of our students, and this case does not deserve further consideration."

The college's Office of Career Advancement advertises lifetime free service for graduates, and boasts on the school's Web site: "We have many resources available for students at any stage of their college career, and even after graduation."

Wow...just wow.

Edit to add:

This is from the NY Post.

I see this paving the way for a new trend to start...

"Why look for a job, when you can just sue your college after you graduate" *rolls eyes* she's broke as hell, but can afford court fees... and paperwork fees, or whatever it is to go through the process of this... If she doesn't get laughed out of the courtroom (or whatever), I hope she gets it... well, not really. I don't agree with what she's doing... but desperate times, I suppose...

She's only been out of school for 3 months?

Sounds like she thought she could just sit back and let them find a job for her, doesn't work that way even in a good economy. There are no guarantees even with a good education.

Guess she really sucks at the learning thing. She had an internship or she wouldn't have graduated from that type of college. Was she that terrible that she couldn't either hook a job there or at least be savvy enough to make some business contacts along the way?

Yup. And the "student loans coming due" bit is nonsense. The student loan folks know times are hard, and they're handing out hardship & other deferments like crazy these days. I suspect she's either an extreme lazyass, totally incompetent, or incapable of getting along with others... possibly all three. Those types are usually also major whiners, which seems to describe this dame pretty well.

If she thought she couldn't get a job before, it'll be ten times harder now. What place is going to want to hire the person who sued her college because they wouldn't find a job for her? Can we say "lazy" and "incompetent"? Regardless of whether or not she is, that's how the whole thing is going to look to a potential employer.

Indeed, D!

Ummm. And yeah, it doesn't matter if you have a BA, it DEPENDS on WHAT you have a BA in.

Hence why I AM NOT GOING TO SCHOOL for what I wanted...at least not my first choice... BUT, I know I will always have a GOOD job, no matter where I go, what branch I go into.

She is a complete ASSHAT.

I hate people like that .. I mean for fucks sake if you are seriously about to LOSE EVERYTHING ( the homeless bit) GET A FUCKING JOB YOU LAZY BITCH. *nods* Don't bitch about how you are not going to have a house, eat , or be able to take care of your shit because you are just to lazy to get off your fucking ass and get a job.

Yes, crappy, low paying jobs suck, but you have to live - you are just making excuses.

But then again, she is sueing her school, not the sharps knife in the drawer. JFC.

From time to time, I am part of the hiring process here at work. If I had an application come across from someone who sued their school, I'd advise against the hiring on the grounds that I don't want an employee to file a frivolous lawsuit the first time something happens at work that she doesn't like.

That's also a really good point - even if she wins the lawsuit, after the lawyers take their cut she may be able to live on the money for a year or two, but after that she's likely screwed herself out of any chance to find a good job now. Beyond stupid.

And I doubt she's very entrepreneurial as evidenced by suing instead of getting out there and doing her thing. So she's not likely to make it on her own either.

sometimes you have to take the crumby jobs until something comes along. just because it isn't there now, doesn't make it the schools fault.

i qualified in mechatronics, it was a boom industry here in 1998, by the time i graduated with merits in 2000 the auto industry here went completely down the pan having a knock on effect onto all engineering firms.

few years of bar work, more uni and crumby shelf stacking jobs, i end up where i am now "for the meantime" and its proving to be a boon in this climate

Survival of the fittest in modern terms translates to survival of the best educated with an ability to be highly adaptable. If you have to adapt to a thrifty lifestyle momentarily and work a dead-end job just to get by until something opens up that is looking for your specific educational/skill background, then so be it. If you don't go along with it, or concoct someway to become self-employed (even then you have rules to play by if you want to get business), then you die out.

And now she took out a giant gun and shot herself in her own damn foot...well, her resume at least. She can kiss any future unemployment goodbye due to this whiny bullshit. At least she did any employer who may have hired her in the future a favor by letting them know that she is a lazy and incompetent whiner beforehand.
