Msterbeau
... is now 50 seconds. It was 45 fairly recently and 30 not that long before that. Why does it keep going up? I'm going to venture a guess that this is an exercise in fund raising? Keep this in mind if that's the case: Most people here don't make much and barely have enough money to make ends meet. You're putting long wait time will likely not change their mind about contributing, but the amount of time is now at a point where it becomes frustrating and annoying to participate here if you haven't paid. All that hard work to get people here and you piss them off with this kind of stuff. I get that it takes money for bandwidth. I do. But I think this path is going to lose you more people then it gains in contributors. At the current length I likely won't post much anymore. Would I like to contribute? Yes. Am I in a position to? Maybe... but I suck at managing money so I'm trying not to spend unnecessarily, like most other people. At this moment... it ain't gonna happen. Them's my $.02 (Which I CAN afford)
freydis
Originally, I thought the delay was to discourage the spammers and trolls, but if its meant to fundraise? Then I totally agree with you. Thats not the best plan in an economy where you're lucky as many people on the board actually *have* jobs at all... At least it did last time I was a regular contributor.
Raev
I don't think it's a fund raising technique. I've seen nothing on increasing time needed to post in order to extort money out of the DGN community.
Destroit
Messageboard hosts probably changed their bandwidth defaults and such. But I'm just speculatin'.

Azeuron
so at the current rate... it would take posting every chance available every 50 seconds 347 hours and change to hit spam master... sorry was bored and had a calculator...

Azeuron
You need to run that backwards for me. 25000 posts for spam master... 50 seconds minimum in between (25000x50) divide that by 60 to get how many minutes... then by 60 again to get hours... came out to 347 hours and about 13.5 minutes Edited because evidently I'm dyslexic today... Troy Spiral (13)
The time hasn't actually changed at least not intentionally. One of the "spam filters" (the time between posts) is at the default setting as far as I'm aware. Its just there to not have a message board used as an instant messenger and therefore suck down a ton of bandwidth / discourage the idea of a place that is meant for more long-form conversation that wouldn't require sub-30 second replies. True, since the ye olden days of DGN supporters/benefactors can ignore the filter, but nothing about it has changed in years, at least not intentionally. Maybe the default setting has been changed due to the various software updates.
Troy Spiral (13)
I went and looked it up, it does (or did as of 5 minutes ago) say 50 seconds. I do remember it being 45 at one time. It has been ages since I changed anything with the flood filter intentionally. I know having it set to zero increases the bandwith usage to the point were our whole monthly amount got sucked down in like a week the few times (in ancient history when the board used far less than it does per-person now) i tried to set it to zero. I "reset to default" and it went back to 45. Which is weird because I'm assuming that setting got changed via the last update, which is something that would have happened automatically with the update. In terms of the broader question of "what is best for the board" that is a complicated question. Different than say "what would I personally prefer". Essentially I guess in a perfect world no flood filter at all would be the preference, at least for say "real" accounts. The problem there is that it really does increase the bandwidth usage by a large amount and the whole board would cost more to run. DGN just barely pays for itself and is in danger of "blacking out" for awhile even at the current usage rate. Very bad to describe that situation as a "money making scheme" as DGN makes no money at all, and over time is actually in the hole by a couple grand, which, has come out of my pocket over the years. I'm trying as hard as I can and so are many of the mods and members, but unfortunately website bandwidth isn't free. :( The board does, strangely enough become cheaper the larger the user base becomes in a very loose sense. Unfortunately right now (and for the last year or so) we are in a fluctuation were that is not holding true due to statistical anomalies in the member to donation ratio. jynxxxedangel
I notice the banner ads at the bottom are gone. It seemed like it might have been a practical way to generate some income for the board..

Troy Spiral (13)
I notice the banner ads at the bottom are gone. It seemed like it might have been a practical way to generate some income for the board.. The ads that were there were non-income generating unfortuantely and were just part of a banner-exchange program organized by Gothic.net which over 3 months, never actually netted us any new posters as far as I can tell. I didn't intentionally get rid of it though, it just got squashed in the "big" update and I've not added it back yet. I'm not sure if i should bring it back or not. Most people generally would prefer no ads, and if the ads don't actually do anything for us... *ponder* Google Adsense, by far the biggest and most trusted ad program on the internet, source of the "text box" ads that are all over the internet, did actually create a tiny bit of income for us a few years ago. But belive it or not the entity known as "DetroitGothic.Net" is BANNED from the AdSense/Google ad program, for some reason. I've questiond google about it, and they basicly told me that they cannot tell me why, and not to expect to ever be removed from the ban list. I've looked for a legitimate (and well established) alternative to AdSense but there do not seem to be any as yet. Yahoo/Microsoft have a beta program competitor to AdSense but it is not available yet (or at least not last time I checked about a month ago)

Yahoo/Microsoft have a beta program competitor to AdSense but it is not available yet (or at least not last time I checked about a month ago) It was definitely 30 sometime in the not so distant past. I'm pretty sure the first few months of 09 it was. 30 wasn't so bad... I'd prefer closer to 15. 45-50 is REALLY annoying. I don't imagine I'm the only one that cares. If I am... I guess I'll just shut my mouth and not post much anymore. Maybe sometime soon I can get back to being a regular contributor again. I very much get that it costs for the bandwidth, and that this is not in any way a money making venture. As stated before. I guess I'm just asking to make it not so annoying with the wait time that we don't wander off. Yeah, I do my share of short and sweet posts. I didn't get to spam master status making Eternal length posts the whole time. I was going to mention the AdSense thing. That sucks that we've somehow been banned from that. That's pretty rotten that they won't even look into why it got there in the first place. :-( You could always do a new domain and point "detroitgothic.net" at the new domain after you set up the AdSense. taysteewonderbunny
admittedly, I did seem to be the only one here who'd actually click on those banners and visit those other sites. No, you weren't. It's just that most of the linked sites were pretty lame, so I stopped visiting them after a while. But I felt that the banners were relatively unobtrusive as banners go. Having to wait nearly a minute between posts IS obtrusive. What is the minimum I can contribute to avoid it? I find myself in the strange predicament wherein I have no money AND no time and I consequently post less as a result of the nearly 1 minute intervals required between posts.
