Fierce Critter
One of the 4 kittens died today. =( He was a runt, and life was a fight for him all along. He couldn't even manage to suckle well off his mother. Seemed almost retarded, in the literal sense of the word. Sometimes I'd have to sit with them so I could ensure he found a nipple and could stay on it. The woman I got them from (a cat breeder, so she's been through this before) warned me he probably wouldn't make it. Despite her advice to "not bother", I did do what I could to nurse him to full health. Despite giving him supplemental feedings & managing to increase his weight by an ounce, it just wasn't in him. Sigh. At least the other three are thriving. But I don't think I can do this fostering again. I can manage to stay unattached enough to pass them on to other homes when they're of age. But losing them this young is too heartbreaking for me.

Onyx
(((hugs))) There's no way I could have ignored that kitten either, even with no hope. My kitty was a pound rescue and I had to give her antibiotics, and they tried to convince me not to take her. She's been a really good cat, never grew to full size but she's gorgeous. Seems to be a sad day today. I found my daughter's hamster dead this morning. Ugh. I have to tell her in a few minutes (her bus gets here in about 45 minutes from now). That makes me even more depressed. I hate telling little kids bad news. Ever time I lose an animal (even a hamster, though it seems a bit silly to some) I keep telling myself "never again". Now I'm down to one cat.
Shade Everdark
I don't really know how you handle all that attachment to all those pets, FC. It's hard enough being attached to my one cat.
ManicQueen
It always sux when a pet die's. Year's ago I had a cat that had a litter of kitten's. I also had two dogs. At the time I had the kittens in my room, I think they were around 2-3 weeks old. One day I came home and found a bloody massacre in my bedroom.. all 8 kittens were torn apart and the mother cat was sitting at the bedroom door almost making this crying sound. Obviously one of the dogs got into the room. It was horrible. I still get kinda emotional when I think of that day. It was weird too cuz this same cat had a few litters before this and the dogs never paid any attention to them before.. they always played with the kittens when they got old enough to play with. Something must of just set off the dog to make him do that...

Fierce Critter
My husband is so sweet & good. He buried the little guy last night in the garden behind our house. But instead of leaving an unmarked grave like we had to for several pets now, he took a red brick and engraved "Little Grey" on it and a little house picture ("a little cat house for the him") and set it in the soil. Damn. I don't even know if it was female or male, it was too tiny for me to tell.

Fierce Critter
I wonder what gets into an animal that it would out of the blue start killing like that. Our German Shepherd, Oakley, is phenomenal with cats. They can eat out of his dish or lick a treat right next to him and he won't so much as raise a lip at them. I can't imagine him harming one of them - they're his herd, and he cares for them.
