I know someone who lent her daughter her car. She had NO IDEA her kid (in her early 20's) was a heroin addict. The car was used to go buy drugs in the D. Well I guess upon leaving girl was pulled over and the car was seized, not just impounded over night like for drunk driving even though...the girl says she never uses behind the wheel. Like that lady who killed all those people in NY....anyway doesn't matter it was moms car either the car is gone. If your caught drunk driving you can get it out the next day??? Thats called impounded.

Personally I hate heroin but am thinking its much worse to drive under the influence of alcohol than just go pick something up then do it at home.

This leads me to a story I read called 'crack for cars' dealers I guess get people real hooked now then 'borrow' a car so THEIRS won't get seized, have 'drivers' do the dealing so they won't get caught at all.

Can't believe anyone would like any substance enough to lose a car over it.

threadjack: Whether or not it is intentional, HH, it is hilarious to see your topics as they appear on the main page owning to your tendency to give two word descriptions in the main part and leaving fuller descriptions in the secondary title section. For example, this topic read as "Cars seized by Homicidal Heathen" in the "Recently Added Topics" marquee. Brilliant! Thanks for bringing a smile to my face.

Seems strange...I'd like to see some more details. What about if it was a rental car? Where's the line between "yours" and "not yours" drawn? I'm sure they wouldn't seize a rental car, but why then a car borrowed without the exchange of money? What if they weren't related - it was a friend's car? What if it was stolen? What if it was a borrowed car but the owner says they stole it? What if a kid steals (borrows without asking) their parent's car?

Yeah in Dolton, IL (a suburb of chicago) they have a law now that states if you are arrested with any narcotics it's an automatic 1,000 dollars to get your car out of impound.

well at least you can still get it out instead of them turning around and selling it to ANOTHER addict on the auction block.

(cause who knows? I know a slum lord goes to these auctions all the time and he does um other things besides rent rat infested buildings)

thats what they do here.

And yes mom was pissed, but not so much to turn her back on the kid. She paid for DECENT 6 month rehab cause what the state will pay for, 2 weeks...doesn't do shit for anyone.

I'd like to know that too. Seems ridiculous to me. Makes me afraid to give anyone a ride anymore. Never know who might have drugs on them, eh?

What am I gonna do, search everyone?

This law is utterly ricockulous...though I'm beginning to feel like most are, these days. You mean to tell me that if some cracker stole my car, and went to score, then MY vehicle would be impounded?????

FUCK THAT!

I would go straight for the highest court available.

I have asked someone to empty pockets and whatnot. And to put the booze out. Its also nice is everyone present has valid current state id, bike or car...walking it don't matter.

People that I let in my car or home have been given 10-100 warnings about drugs around me. I have no interest in paying for what they choose to do in their free time. If I find a person to be a risk, they never get invited to ride with me or come over... Period.

That's one of the major reasons I haven't had more parties at my house... Speaking of, Val's hosting a pirate party. Prolly need to invite people.

I will take a stab in the dark but I am not 100% sure on American owner ship laws.

The mother would be likely to be able to say the daughter stole the car thus getting it back, likely insurance in this case, but her daughter would result in getting a(nother even) criminal conviction. The reason that the car would be taken and impounded or what ever is because things like this usually are required for evidence purposes. It usually uses clauses like authority or agency given to the convicted person from the principal, which would result in knowledge of use and therefor the ability for police to seize personal property; you might even find that in your guys Anti-Drugs act that there is a clause stating any vehicle belonging to a convicted person used in a drug dealing can be seized.

Might not make sense but generally the only thing that would provide pure separate legal personality, specially from your family, is if you place a claim against them or the property was within a company.

As I said, I am not 100% sure on U.S law, but it works something like that where I am from. I don't think its facist, I think its common sense. Other wise you will end up with crap like, "Mans don't take my P Lab because my brother was using it to make drugs, it belongs to me therefor you can't do shit." Laws are there for stop a greater evil with a smaller one usually, not just to piss us off.
