Well first of all you won't really be able to cover up any scars, especially if they're thick scars. The most you'll probably be able to do is make them a lot less noticable.

Tattoos do hurt. Some areas of the body more than others.. I can't really describe what it feels like. Personally, I love the pain. Don't worry though, you can handle it, it's not THAT bad, don't be scared :) After the artist beats the shit out of your skin with needles, it usually feels like a bad sunburn for about 2-3 days.

Sometimes you need a touch up. If you don't wash it enough or take care of it properly and you get a huge monster scab, when it finally heals it usually takes some color with it.

Also "good place" and "under $60" is probably a long shot unless you're talking very small tattoo, like maybe the size of a business card, or something really simple.

I have a whole list of good places in the Detroit and Grand Rapids areas that I got from my tattoo artist out in Wyoming (he started out in GR and Detroit area)

All these shops are clean as well. 99.9% of all tattoo artists these days are clean because they don't want the risk of being sued into the grave.

Just a tip for ya though, if you go into a tattoo shop and get a tattoo, make sure you see them open the package that contains the sterilized needles and so forth.. They should be wearing latex gloves, and their work table should be clean as a bell (aside from their equipment and inks on it of course)

I'll post back in a few minutes with that list of places.. One I know off the top of my head is Magnum Tattoos in GR.. I'll be back with that list.

Plus it's more the vibration and "numbness" tingling feeling that gets me personally than the pain. I've got three tats and none of them even made me wince.

Even if the tat heals nice and stuff, sometimes ink still does come out, maybe in a couple spots (depending on how heavy handed the artist is) but they usually give free touch ups, if they are worth their mettle.

And also I would like to make one more suggestion. DO NOT GET FLASH! Even if you see something in the books or on the wall that you like, don't have him just put that on you. Have the artist personalize it in some way, or you have an idea of things that could be different about it.

Nobody wants the same tat fifty million people have.

But getting ink is great. I wish I could get some right now. *sigh* But good luck on the tat.

Ok so there was a place called Electric Superstition but I guess they're relocating and closed right now.. If they re-open then you'll want to check out Tommy for black and gray, and Jime' for color.

Then there's a place called Wonderland Tattoos, my artist recommended everyone that works there, he said they're all great.

Then if you feel like going to K-zoo, there's a place called Body Armour.. The top guy there is Jack Moser, I guess he does some awesome color work.

And Magnum Tattoos in GR like I said..

It's too bad ES is closed for the time being because my artist was talking up Tommy and Jime' like they're tattoo gods.. I have seen a lot of Tommy's work and god damn is it awesome, his black and greys look very realistic.

Anyway hope this helps ya out.

Jime Litwalk, Tom Renshaw, and Jeff Shea are all phenomenal tattoo artists formeerly of Electric Superstitions (ES). Jime is working out of his home while his new shop is being built, he's awesome at cartoonish characters, coverups, and bright color work. Tom is working at Eternal Tattoos in Livonia, and he VERY expensive, but the best Black & Gray artist in the world. Jeff Is working somewhere out of waterford, but I cannot for the life of me remember the name of his new shop.

A Good artist that studied under Jime is Nick Kelly, who, luckily for me, moved to Eternal Tattoos in Eastpointe when ES closed to move to their new location. Nick did my family crest on my right arm, and the "sattelite" pieces around my Celtic Cross, which was done by Jeff Shea.

Does anyone have any experience with Royal Oak tattoo? They're really close by, but I don't really have any reason to want to go there other than that.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I used to go there because it was close to my house, but the artist that I went to no longer works there. He works at Eastside Underground in Utica. I like his work, and I am confortable with him. His name is Phil James. His website is http://www.philjamestattoo.com/, if you want to contact him. If you do contact him, tell him that Rachel sent you.

Hey, I got my first tattoo done at Body Armour! It's just a simple tiny black bat, and I don't remember the guys name by now... but I know lots of people who've gotten work done there, I highly recommend them.

But, whatever you do, DO NOT GO TO THE ASYLUM in kazoo. the guy who owns it is a total asshole, and his best artist left a few years ago anyway.

Also... in Otsego there's a woman named Raven. She does amazing work, is reasonably priced, and is a complete sweetheart. My skin didn't take the ink she did me with the first time, but when I went back, she was more than happy to retouch it with different stuff. Not only was she concerned about my tattoo... heh, but of how the ink she did was viewed by other people. Which is understandable. If I painted something and it started peeling, I'd totally want to fix it.

Hmm.... that's all I've got though. Good luck on your search.

Yeah see my artist in Wyoming, Jeff Everett, used to work with those guys, he probably hasn't heard from them for at least a couple years so he thought they were still in business.. I read it online that they closed.. Jeff is the guy who showed Jime the ropes, well for the most part..

Also if you ever go to Chicago and want a tattoo - Jade Dragon Tattoos is decently priced and it's decent work but nothing amazing.. Guilty to Innocent Productions is a great shop in Chi-town.

Also I don't know if I mentioned this but getting a tattoo on scar material is going to hurt a bit more.. Kind of like touch-ups.. Touch-ups tend to hurt a lot more than the original tattoo did as well.. But again it's nothing anyone couldn't handle.. You might become addicted to the pain like I am and blow 1,000 bucks on tattoos in 12 weeks :)

Another idea to get a tat with little or no cash is too hold a tattoo party, alot of times if you can getthe artist at least 10 peps that actually get a tat they will give you one for free, if it is small or one hell of a deal on bigger things.

THis is the guy who did the ankh on my legg (which is a cover up) and i have been to parties and seen him do amazing work on other people.

Skin Grafix By John (248) 543-9223

Custom tribal * Fine & Bold Line

Cover & Repair * Black & Grey

Hospital sterlization

A.T.S. Tested & approved

John used to work at BEYOND REALITY inside GIBRALTAR in Mt clemens, since he was mugged and stabbed several times he has set up a home studio and does tat's at parties.

Also if any one does call him up let him know Harmony sent you, please. He has done some work for friends and myself at amazing deals and i want him to know i really do try to send peps his way for his generosity. Thank you.

Harmony

I wanted to get some scars done too. 'Coarse mine are pretty major....one is long and was a deep cut all the way through my abdominal wall 3 times. The guy said they are to like waxy and the tat wouldn't look good and that it wasn't a good way to cover it up. But I guess if yours weren't deep.....ask the guy.

I went to Finest Touch at Gibraltar North. So did my hubby. They used disposable needles (you seem them open the packet and throw it away) and wear gloves and clean the spot off a little first.

It doesn't hurt. It just kinda stings a little. Actually think I could like it in the right setting....but in front of all of those people you just want to get it over with.

My palms did sweat though. I always get that.

Personally, I love the pain.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Word... nothing like that magic moment when the endorphins suddenly kick in... then you're like "damn, hope he doesn't finish too soon!" & planning your next one.

I didn't discover this till fairly recently... my first 5 or so I was, um, heavily sedated when I got 'em. Then the next one I wasn't but my body still wasn't making endorphins... & I was AMAZED at how much it hurt. The poor bastard who did it prolly still has my fingerprints on his leg (this was at a convention w/a pretty makeshift setup). The last 2 tho, my body chemistry had pretty much normalized... so I was able to enjoy the aforementioned endorphin effect. Interesting.

So all in all, it hurts, but it's nothing you can't deal with. Nowhere near as bad as a root canal, steroid injection into a joint, opiate withdrawal, the aftermath of being hit by a van traveling 50 mph, or childbirth (OK that last one is just hearsay on my part but you get the idea).

Yes they hurt...not too bad though depending on the spot

Almost all places are inspected for cleanliness these days

Just make sure the artist opens the needles and Ink in front of you

you have a right to know...if you don't see some thing, or see something you don't like...ask
