Asian carp almost in Lake Mich.

Recommended Posts

They've found asian carp DNA within 7 miles of lake Michigan, which means they've crossed the electric barrier that's kept them out of the Great Lakes so far. These things WILL destroy the entire Great Lakes commercial and sport fishing industry within a few years... they crowd out every other species... there are parts of the Illinois river where they make up 90% of the biomass. Pray the state of Illinois and the Army Corps of Engineers don't drag their feet about closing the locks.

No no no!!!

Jesus H Chirst! Who needs a fishing pole! They jump right in the boat!

Well between this and that damn asian ornamental grass metro will never be the same.

I miss cat tails. Pussy willow. Reeds.

Humans suck.

My kid is seriously thinking of going into marine biology...maybe this will help convince her.

Had no idea they had asian carp rapid response group (huffington post is the best for news btw)

As a fisherman, I am pissed. I guess it's good that I don't fish in the Great Lakes hardly, even before all of this Asian Carp bullshit, fishing in the Great Lakes has been frustrating and when you DO catch something you can't really eat it lest you want to run the risk of getting breast cancer or growing an extra eyeball. Shitty that this species is invading and nailing the last nail in the coffin.

Maybe, one day, with all this new cuisine and stuff, someone will figure out how to make sushi out of breast cancer.

Americas waters are some of the most polluted ever, what a shame, thanks to the fortune fuktard corporations and stupid humans that allow every ship from around the world into our harbors without first checking them for species like this,I also blame the other countries governments as well from where these ships come from, because they cover it up.

Asian carp in our waters and Fortune 500 Corporations have nothing in common. Fish do not really ride in on the hulls of ships that we don't check. Asian carp were brought over here in the 1970's by catfish farmers because they would clean up the ponds. Sadly after a few floods that let them out into streams the carp finally made it near the Mississippi and made their way up here...blame whoever you want but although this REALLY sucks you should at least try to do something other than blame people that probably don't know what the hell carp are.

I'm not yelling at you dude. But the sad fact is that it really isn't all the big corporations...it is everyone. The corporation contribute too but in the whole pie the contribute only a small slice. If something is to be done then the finger pointing has to stop and the ass must leave the seat. If I want to keep hunting and fishing then I have to keep helping and I don't give a rats ass WHO did it...I just try my best to clean it up.

I would like to put part of my blame on the local governments that lie in infested areas. UW Madison has cleaned up quite a few local rivers and streams and so have many other colleges and small groups. However, the most the local leaders have done is offer fishermen $1 per carp. Honestly, it isn't that expensive to remove the carp from the waterways...it just takes time and effort...both of which a local corporation in Oshkosh has put forth.

Speaking of invasive species, I just bought some White Perch (Morone americana) on sale from Kroger, earlier.

This is a WONDERFUL eating fish. I cooked it just the same as you would Yellow Perch-- dusted in Cajun fish fry coating, and pan-fried in a bit of butter. It was excellent!!!!! It tasted just as good as any croppie or calico I've ever caught, in my opinion. Very similar to good quality tilapia, if not better. I didn't even need to use any lemon, and I'm usually a stickler for that.

Buy this fish, and make the best of its existence in the Great Lakes!

Well said. Sure wasn't corporations that turned all those pythons loose in the Everglades.

And for the record, the water hereabouts is MUCH cleaner than it was 50 years ago. When I was a cub Lake Erie was on the verge of dying altogether. And you don't even want to know what downriver was like.

P.S. Aren't goldfish an Asian carp?

DON'T let pet goldfish go in artesian-fed ponds, or into rivers, folks!!! They are capable of growing into monstrous proportions.

Goldfish are nothing more or less than fancy carp morphs originally bred in Asia, and if released into the wild (including sewer systems) will revert to carp (like pigs revert to "wild boars") and grow up to 3-4'. In fact, one of the Asian carp articles I read, about the planned December 2 poisoning, stated that most of the by-kill would probably be goldfish and two other species I can't recall right now.

They're probably going to ban goldfish as carnival prizes, because of this! :hrhr:

Look for major changes in the legality of non-native species in the near future. I was against HR 669 because it was majorly flawed, unfair, and pretty much unenforceable anyway... but invasive species have become a major problem in way too many parts of the country.

This makes me fear for the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. Everyone that goes there takes damn good care of the place and it would really suck to have that beautiful place go to hell because of some nasty fish. On the bright side there have been a bunch of other scares with invasive species up in the BW before and they have taken care of the problem.

And I will also argue for the side that likes the carp around...there is nothing like getting your ass knocked of the dock by a large, smelly, and ugly fish that hated you enough to jump out of the water. There are a growing number of spots in Wisconsin where you "fish at your own risk" because of these carp and the damage they can cause...which means if you have the balls you can hit the jackpot...the jackpot that keeps getting smaller but it is still a jackpot for now.

Yeah, the "we can just fish the carp" POV is a bit shortsighted... sport fishing is a $7 billion industry here, and no one is going to want to be out on the water when a 4' fish is likely to leap out of the water and fracture your skull.

I think that carp should be fair game for people who like to spear fish, with no size limit, or catch limit. I've always hated them. They are notorious lure stealers and line breakers. I know a lot of poor folks like to eat them, so they'd be all set.

Yeah sport fishing used to be huge in Wisconsin...it still is in a way...but it is not what it used to be. I live on a river that used to be clear and full of bass and northern and all the good stuff. Well, now the big catch is a crap the size of a black lab...of which I have speared three. They tried seeding the river with bass and northern again but of the ones that survived most mutated and people were catching bass that were S-shaped and northern with missing pieces. We also had to redo the hydro-electric dams, which we don't use for some stupid reason, because people used them as walkways and too many people got hit by carp. My friend says that carp are the ultimate bitch-clap from G*d for fucking up what he made...in a way I agree.

Unless of course you're a badass like me, who will catch the carp using his teeth.
