Recommended Posts

So I went to install some normal windows updates on the computer and when it went to restart itself it would not do so

& The screen it goes to says click this to repair the problem.. But after it scans it, it says it can not be automatically repaired..

WTF did I do??

I only installed some updates  Does anyone know anything about computers? Anyplace I can get this looked at for a fair price?

I can not be without the computer.. I need to do my classes on there & Rev needs it for his music stuff :cry

I am sooooooo freaking out about this right now!!!!!

How old is it? Which OS (I'm assuming Windows) ... according to the answers, it might be cheaper to buy a new one if the answer can't be solved by a restore.

My Netbook was pretty cheap ($400 - ish and Windows XP) and has better hardware specs than my way more expensive (though 3 years old now) MacBook.

Computers have come down in price a lot and it's not really worth it to fix anything hardware related older than a few years anymore, especially if it's a motherboard or HD issue.

However, in your case, I'd try a restore (Windows XP and beyond have safe mode boots then you can set it back in time to a certain point, usually back up your hard drive - if you haven't already - and do a fresh restore with your restore disks that came with the computer). That usually will fix slow or missing Windows pieces, which is what it sounds like.

Yeah.. I need to find that disk. The computer is not even two years old :X

I just don't get it.. I only installed an update

I so can't afford a new computer right now.. But I really need to have it.. grrr.

Restore disks should always be kept within reach for a Windows machine ... Microsoft is nortorious for updates not completing and you have missing OS info on a reboot, usually easily solved if you keep your stuff backed up and restore the machine from the disk(s).

I usually will just restore mine from the disks at lease once a year, more than that if it starts slowing down or an issue pops up. That setting back tool (at least on XP) is usually only useful to get info off the machine that you haven't yet before you restore it.

It's a pain, but it keeps the machine running smoothly.

I have Vista also. I don't know if what I deal with sometimes is the same issue, but from time, it won't fully boot up; it just says microsoft windows and the screen just sits there. So I manually just shut off the computer. I turn it back on and it asks if I want to do windows repair, or just start normally, which starting windows normally, is what I choose, and then its fine from there. Ive never had any issues with installing updates though...
