Dear City Club Dj's,

Okay listen, I've been going to alternative clubs for years. I've been to ones across the country, Europe and many other places. But I frequently attend the City Club due to living here. But it's music, is just not up to par.

I'm friends with the old school city club dj's ( I mean, the one's back in the late 1980's, when City Club was the Ledernact (spell?))

I go to the club with them, they complain to me. They said it use to be much better. So we go hang out back at someone's place and let them spin like they use to. And there is one huge difference...

they mix beat on beat.

There is no break between songs, the songs seem to flow into one giant 3 hour long song. They throw in new stuff to keep it interesting, but it matches the beat that the song had previously and I just keep on dancing in their living room.

But I don't want to dance in a living room anymore. I want to dance in a club, on a dance floor and not have my groove be interrupted.

I know, the sound system could be better, but it is the same exact one these guys used back in the day and they mixed beat on beat. These guys even hauled in milk cartons full of records even.

So please, lets work on that.

Love,

N

I'm sorry but I find the love at the end completely disingenuous.

We all bitch about City Club, but most of us still go.

We know it's still better than anything else out there.

Sure the music might be better somewhere else

G-d knows the sound system is, but nowhere has the atmosphere.

We can all be ourselves, and let loose, and unlike places like Neo in Chicago or Necto in A2, which everyone

always says is soooo much better, you can't say a fucking word at either place.

You have to yell it (esp at Neo as there is not even a side table like at Necto)

With CC, you get two places in one.

A club, and a neighborhood bar, goth-style.

I love that about it.

There is plenty of good music.

Some of it's overplayed, and yes some of it downright sucks,

but it still gets me out there dancing every Saturday I'm there. And I love hanging out with the DGNfolk.

So, they don't mix beat on beat. There are worse things, like playing Taylor Swift and Hinder.

Hinder.jpg

The one thing that I can't stand--

the douchebags that go there with their baseball caps leering at goth chicks like they have seen the darkness

and if they're lucky they'll finally get a blowjob their prissy little sorority gfs won't give them.

That is unless the chicks turn on them and harvest their blood

I used to think we should have a fashion bouncer keeping them all out.

I used to, until one night a couple years ago, a couple snotty, fat-phobic women went around increasing people's insecurity, and generally pissed everyone off, giving out fashion tickets they created, because apparently they were the be-all end-all.

Fuck that.

We bitch about CC, but it's still our place, and for you to condescendingly say

"So please, lets work on that." you are no better than those two snotty bitches giving out fashion tickets and ruining their evening.

If you know so much about mixing beats and music, I recommend you and your old DJ friends put in an application and reclaim the booth. Or start your own night somewhere. No one's stopping you.

I'm not complaining about the content that is being played, its the way that they are playing it. And, the dj's have talked to Sybil and Higgins about re-spinning and have had no luck (and are creating their own night for a once a month fetish party, details coming soon.)

I'm just saying that it would move the crowd much more than is already does. Club music is generally played beat-on-beat, and all major cities goth/industrial bars I have been to, have done so.

I myself am not a fan of beat matching. I like having songs that begin and end. I like the small breaks in between to let my mind reset and go into the next track.

I usually can't stand when they all blend together into one monotonous string, where all the beats sound the same to the point that you can't even tell when they have switched artists!

Some beat matching can be cool when its done right... and please not too often.

:yes

Thank god I haven't encountered those. I'd be bored to tears and never return.

yeah.... I am not saying there is anything WRONG with beat matching.... but it is my preference to have it NOT done... (Just goes to prove the point that the DJ's are NOT able to make everyone happy, because we all like different things.... )

Damn this, I am bitching. Last week they played Lady Gaga twice. They seem to cater to the younguns but us older clubbers are the ones spending the money at the bar so I think they should cater to us. Its supposed to be a Goth bar so lets be Goth.

Seriously. If I wanted to hear Lady Gag-me, I would go to some other club that plays that kind of shit.

I agree. Having 2-3 songs in a row blend together is tolerable, anything more and I get really bored and find myself wanting a break.

They played Lady Gaga at Necto too this week. Wtf is going on?

The reason it was played at Necto this week is we had our monthly resident from CC Void 6 who was also the one who played it as CC. He played it as more of a joke I assume but the dancefloor stayed packed and most people had fun. IT WILL NOT BE IN THE WEEKLY ROTATION I ASSURE YOU! Thats all I am going to say in this thread as it seems like a trainwreck waiting to happen I am bailing now before things get snippy.

I wasn't mad about it or anything, hell, I was trashed and I danced to it. I was just wondering what was going on. Thanks for clarifying :)

So many things are heinous with his message, I'm not even sure where to start. To say that there is never a beat-matched set at City Club is a blatant lie. I know this because, well, I work there and being a dj, it's something I notice no matter what genre of club I'm at. I don't say that in a negative way either. I'm not a person who needs to hear one continuous 3-hour long set to be happy. I enjoy the quirky endings of some songs that might otherwise be missed if things were mixed. Quite honestly, the crowd itself is pretty divided down the middle about their like/dislike for beatmatching in general.

As for the cartons of milk crates comment, that's really more a sign of the times, isn't it? Am I any less relevant as a dj because I only carry in two 50+lb cases of cd's, plus an additional bag of music that I bring "just in case?" Most clubs (and my dear, I've been traveling to some of the biggest in the world over the past 9 years) don't even have the capability to spin vinyl anymore. It's all switched over to cd's. Do I own vinyl? Hell yes. Lost of it! Do I appreciate when I see someone spinning vinyl? Hell yes again. But, do I believe that the mark of a good dj is whether or not they spin vinyl or cd's? No. Do I believe that the make-it-or-break-it point is whether they continuously mix every single set they've ever spun? Of course not. It's also about song selection, application and keeping the crowd happy.

And if you're jonesing for some "old-school" industrial, I suggest you check out our Old School night on Friday January 1st. You can find info about it in the 'Nightlife Events and Concerts' section.
