XillaToxic
honestly i have been going to city club for many of years and what i suggest to all of those ppl they aren't happy with hearing a certain song.. or what have you.. just walk off the dance floor go mingle , have a drink.. and then come back a lil later and see if you like what you hear.. if you don't try and make a request to the dj personally. if they can play it awesome ..if they can't oh well.. just chill don't worry about and have fun.. that's what i do.. there have been many of night where i wasn't into the music.. and im not personally blaming the djs.. per say .. we all just have those night.. but lately i have enjoyed the music.. i mean yeah the lady gaga was a lil off.. but honestly i kind like lady gaga. so weather we like the music or not if it keeps people on the dance floor .. that is the main thing as far music and dj part of the club goes. Destroit
yeah.... I am not saying there is anything WRONG with beat matching.... but it is my preference to have it NOT done... (Just goes to prove the point that the DJ's are NOT able to make everyone happy, because we all like different things.... ) Beat-matching? WTF, isn't that what those preppy kind of hip-hop rap stations do? I guess it can be okay if done right, but just seems a little out of this genre imho, so yeah I agree with you on this part. Destroit
Damn this, I am bitching. Last week they played Lady Gaga twice. They seem to cater to the younguns but us older clubbers are the ones spending the money at the bar so I think they should cater to us. Its supposed to be a Goth bar so lets be Goth. WTF...? Lady Gaga? Not at my goth club! No I really say that because CC is no longer my goth club . I gave CC another shot for DGN Night, actually was pleasantly suprised in the DJs that night and the decent setlist, but since appreciation night have heard nothing but more complaints so I'm still a bit nervous to go back. I was hoping the morale from DGN Night was going to be how it was from now on, along with the decent music, but if they're playing Lady Gaga...? I'll save my four dollars and dance in my living room to some actual EBMdustrial, I don't care, sorry. And quite honestly, I don't mind some pop music, actually her Poker Face song is pretty catchy...it's just NOT for ANY legitimate goth club that I would support. Same goes for Justin Timberlake - Jizzed in My Pants which I've heard they've also played a few times.
torn asunder
gotta agree with cher, i mean, technically, it's more of an industrial club than goth, but still, it's a.. GOTH-INDUSTRIAL CLUB!! how the hell does lady gaga & justin timberlake fit into that genre? i mean, i dig a lot of different music, but that doesn't mean i want it played at city. can you imagine "jive talkin'" by the beegees, or "save a horse, ride a cowboy" at city? just doesn't fit, and neither do the other two... AstralCrux
It's just going to repel lots of us old-schoolers away from the club. Eventually the loss of money will be heard. I just pray they quit playing Shaolyn – Face Down. (I'm not going back until I know they won't.) If they want to get funky and play something different, why not some underground stuff in a different genre? I heard Baxendale got played, and I'm sorry I missed it. I suggest Shock Therapy (the band) or heck- something I've never heard of. See, if they were to do something like that, I think it would be less offensive to the majority and it might be alot more fun! I'm a great fan of mixing things up, but I say go off the beaten track (bad pun) and play some cool underground stuff.
DJ Saint
really now... must we continue to beat a dead-horse? It's 2010, new decade, time for some change which can and should equate to NEW music. City Club isn't rapidly going to transform into a top 40 booty bar anytime soon (or EVER!) just because a Lady Gaga track gets played. You old schoolers aghast at todays modern club sounds, should make every effort to get out to the Old-School nights City Club is hosting. Lots of good music from years past. And finally, maybe it's time to reconsider and quit branding City Club as a goth-industrial bar and start thinking of it as a dance club that caters to dark music from several genre's (noise , idm, techno , industrial, pop, rock, whatever...) Had a great conversation last night at the club on this very topic and we both walked away with the belief that peoples pre-conceived notions of what City is and should be holds it back from progressing into the potential of what it COULD be. detroitfetishfriday
I was a DJ at the CC in the mid 80's and was subject to same criticism that is happening today. The only problem was that there was no forum to discuss topics like this. I mixed beat on beat like Ms.Naughtya's post. We had complaints I don't doubt it, that's what I was told by management. Club goers are very passionate about the CC. I have noticed on my visits that there is a lot of energy left on the dance floor when one song ends and the next song begins. The wait for the start up of the next song causes dancers to lose dance momentum some stay some leave. So that's why beat mixing is used to keep the dancers and the flow of the music going. If beat mixing is used correctly it does not necessarily mean one song would last 3 hours. For example Depeche Mode sounds different that New Order and Nitzer Ebb is different than Front 242. The object is to bring in the new song while you are dancing to the last song. Then you realize there is a new song you are dancing to. Here is a classic mix I did for fun. It is on sendspace.com please feel free to download and listen http://www.sendspace.com/file/2koas9 As a DJ in a cutting edge club like City, the DJ's job is to introduce new music. The best way I found to do it was play a few recognizable then slip in a new song that I was trying to break in. Then I would go back to a few recognizable songs and the cycle continued. I mixed a set then would take a break with what I called dance oriented rock like, The Cure, The Smiths, The Cult, I am sure you get it. I would try to balance out the night, easier said than done. On Saturday nights the CC had 2 DJ's that took turns one mixed the other played out songs beginning to end that seemed to worked. The CC DJ equipment and sound system needs to be addressed. It needs an update. The CD Decks need an upgrade to modern CD decks. The sound system and the equipment are the same stuff I used, that's over 20+ years ago. If today's DJ 's do know how to mix it is almost impossible to do so on the CC equipment. There are some quality computer based programs for laptops. Hell what am I talking about, the whole club needs an update.Just look up and around the next time you are there or better yet dance around a puddle or a bucket of water after a rain. AAAH I digress. AAAH I digress. excellent! A DJ From 20 years ago popping onto the boards to make his first post .... and it's semi-critical at that . Welcome Reggie or Eric, whichever one you are... First of all - the current DJ's do beat match when they can. They are certainly capable, skilled and have the knowledge of how to do it and they do it more often than not. It's not a continuous thing all night and from week to week. As you'll see from some of the earlier responses here that patrons DON'T want that and with the current club music, not every track needs to be matched beat for beat. Here's 2 mixes I did that are beat matched http://www.sendspace.com/file/xyvd34 http://www.sendspace.com/file/kenjmk One noisy and the other more future-pop oriented... and yeah I am a current City Club DJ - so anyone who claims City DJ's don't beat match, there's 2 reminders of a DJ who can and does and EVEN on the City Club system .... Also pay attention and listen to Void 6, Elektrosonik and Pleasure Kitten you'll hear some well transitioned mixes. And I have to second with Kats earlier post... "...Do I believe that the make-it-or-break-it point is whether they continuously mix every single set they've ever spun? Of course not. It's also about song selection, application and keeping the crowd happy. " Agreed that the sound system needs to be updated. The decks have been updated since you've been there. They are Pioneer CDJ's.... Mixer has been updated as well. The club could certainly use new amps, speakers... but I'm not holding my breath. Anyways... Love your DJ's (LOL)
