WASHINGTON - A bitterly divided Supreme Court vastly increased the power of big business and unions to influence government decisions Thursday by freeing them to spend their millions directly to sway elections for president and Congress.

Just what we didn't need. Everyone that voted for Bush can thank him and his administration for this. As if special interests don't already have enough influence.

Uhh how is it Bush's fault that the Supreme Court ruled the way they did? They are a total separate entity from the executive branch of government, and last time I checked all 9 justices had brains in their heads.

With that said, I think it's very dumb that they did this, but blaming Bush is also quite silly.

The next time you see me, look at me with a straight face and tell me if this happened 1 year after Obama left office (appointing 2 justices) there wouldn't be an angry mob with torches and pitchforks involved

I don't even know how to respond to this logic

Bush could have nominated judges with a more balanced or neutral record. He didn't. He didn't make these particular decisions, but he was significantly involved in the process that got the men their positions. Now corporations, unions and other business related entities get to spend whatever they want to influence elections. I don't see any good coming from this and Bush had a direct hand in this day coming to pass. Bury your head in the sand if you want, his legacy will continue to haunt us for a long time.

They've been influencing elections like that for years now.

Obama is the biggest recipient of campaign contributions from all of the afore mentioned entities.

We the people, are the biggest influence on elections ! Case in point: Scott Brown

As long as we don't lose sight of that, then they can spend all the money they want and it won't amount to anything.

Sadly, far too many people never dig any deeper into a subject then what they see on the tube. That's why stuff like this is so worrying. The majority of the country doesn't vote at all. much less with their brain fully engaged. Those with deep pockets can spread half truths through advertising quite easily while those with an opposing view will struggle to counter it because of lack of funds.

Well if more people, like the residents of Massachusetts, wake up and engage their brains, things will change for the better. We're all in this together. I think people are starting to realize how the political machine is impacting our country.

Rev, I brought Obama into the discussion because I felt it was relevant to my thought.

Also, the Bush administration substantially reinforced the whole "big business should get to do whatever the fuck they want" mentality at every possible turn... which would seem to have strongly influenced this decision.

I guess the slap in the face to the Great Lakes region wasn't enough; they had to sell out the whole country (well, the non-business-entity part, anyway). Two severely fucked up actions, and the year has barely started... the august justices are really on a roll.

When did this Supreme Court decision happen? Yesterday.

Was George W. Bush president of the USA yesterday ? No.

Who was president yesterday and for the next 3 yrs ? Barack H. Obama

Bush is not the president, blaming him for anything that happens Now is ridiculous.

Continuing to blame Bush for anything that happens now, is only going to aid in Democrats losing more elections, IMO.

BUSH MADE THE FUCKING NOMINATIONS!!! What about that don't you get? These judges would not be there without his having nominated them at a time when Republicans still held congress and therefore assuring the nominations would be confirmed.

Well, they are there to stay so we might as well get over that. They are going to nominate who they want whether we like the person or not..

No. They won't. If people put pressure on them not to, they'll back down. The problem is a lot of conservatives will back a conservative's choice no matter what. Likewise on the liberal side. We all wield some power collectively. There's just too many people that don't care and too many people blinded by ideology.

So, with that logic, it is neither Bush's fault, nor Obamas.

It's our fault.

We're getting what we deserve for dumbing ourselves down and letting people run around uneducated and not having the balls to speak up to anyone anymore when they do shit like set their kids in front of a TV instead of sitting them in front of textbooks.

The only thing I'm mad about is that all of the stupid sheeple are going to take the rest of us with them.

So not, fuck the government, or fuck Bush/Obama, or eff big business or even the leftists or the right-wing...fuck America for not giving a shit, we deserve this type of shit to happen because of our apathy.

In many respects, yes.
