The Lost Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X

HAHAHA this made me think of Rev's sandwich song.... it can be the jingle for the new term...

The Lost Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X... and now the Sandwich Generation? Both President Obama and Vice President Biden are invoking the tasty term while addressing the need for government to help the middle class with tax credits.

So, who are the sandwichers? They may sound like a group of people who grew up on hoagies, but this sandwich is more metaphorical than meaty. The president is referring to those American adults who care for their children as well as their parents. In other words, they're being sandwiched with a lot of expenses.

The term's popularity is just beginning to surge. In this coming Wednesday night's State of the Union address (which gave him an awesome excuse to skip jury duty, by the way), the president will explain his newest proposals, including those that aim to give a bit of relief to Generation Sandwich.

An article from the New York Times explains some of the specific tax cuts the president will likely propose, including a plan to call on Congress to "nearly double the child care tax credit for families earning less than $85,000."

How does one know if they belong to the Sandwich Generation? A blog from the Buzz explains that you may belong to the group if "you’re either a younger Baby Boomer, born in the late 1950s or early 1960s, or an older member of 'Generation X,' born in the mid-1960s." Those are just rough guidelines, though. Whether or not you can hope for a tax break will depend on the individual.

The term has actually been around for some time. On her official site, aptly named "SandwichGeneration.com," Carol Abya discusses how she came up with the phrase, as well as her thoughts on "the challenges of elder/parent care."

We're not sure if Ms. Abya had the foresight to copyright the term, but she might do well to investigate her options. When the president talks about how he wants to give certain groups of people tax breaks, people search.
