Unemployment Benefits Not Extended

Recommended Posts

I don't like people who steal and if somone is passing up ANY job opportunities while I'm working my ass off on my job to support their laziness and/or excuse making...that's stealing. It's wrong.

I could be mistaken about this but I thought that unemployment was paid in by employers. And unemployment is not tax free money. You have to report it as income and you are taxed for it. I think maybe we are confusing unemployment with welfare. Maybe some people know how to work the system better then me, cause I don't see how anyone could ever make a living off of unemployment benefits alone.

No it is not always paid by the employer. If it were I would be getting paid by the people that let me go and my friend would be getting paid by the company he used to work for. Unless they changed something employers, and regular people most likely, pay and unemployment tax. Unemployment compensation is based on federal law but is handled at the state level. That is why the feds have all the votes on this and make the decisions...then they pass everything off to the states so they can make it worse.

...the rules...sometimes, are bullocks!

...liars are what they are...if you can not state the TRUTH...what good is Knowing?

..fuck this thread.

(this post is intended for everyone, not just rev.)

truth is subjective and relative...

and rules, whether one agrees with them or not, are to be followed on this board. if one doesn't like the rules, one can always make the choice to not post here. it's quite simple, really.

I would like to get back to the topic because I have more to say on this issue. It has been suggested that someone who is receiving unemployment should be willing to take any job that is available to them. While I do not totally disagree with this statement there are reason why some people can not take just any job offered to them if that job pays less then what they were making before. A few years ago there was a friend of mine who had been order to pay $500.00 a month in child support. He had a good job at the time and the child support payments came out of his paycheck each week. Then the lay offs came and he found himself out of work. He received unemployment and even though he was out of work due to no fault of his own, he still was order to pay the $500.00 a month in child support. A few months went by and he still did not have a job. I suggested to him that he go to a fast food place and get a job. Even though it was less money at lest it would be a job. He explain to me that he had to find a job that offered enough pay of cover his child support payments and also enough for him to live on as well. This is a good example of why some people just can't take any job that is out there. In the end my friend got called back to his old job and was able to make his support payments.

I'm confused...why couldn't he take the job? You don't lose unemployment benefits when you get a job, they keep paying you underemployment. So WITH a job and the underemployment he would have been making MUCH more than just being on unemployment...thus the source of my confusion.

depends on the job and how much you make/how many hours you work. i'm not sure the exact ratio, but my understanding is that there's a certain point where they actually stop paying. if the job is in that range, but still not enough to cover his payments, i can see not taking the job.

I don't know if it varies by state but here in WI my friend was on unemployment for only 2 months before he got a job...they still kept him on it for 2 more months into the job where they then did an assessment of hit situation...just like they did when he applied for unemployment. If you really do need it that badly they usually keep you on for as long as you need as long as its not past the max unemployment period. I don't know what kinda job pays enough numbers to take you right out of unemployment but I am damn sure you don't start there.

Let me see if I can explain. When you are on unemployment you are allowed so much a week depending on what your regular job paid you. I am not sure how it is figured out without pulling out an old unemployment handbook that I have around here somewhere, but unemployment pay is something like 1/2 your regular pay. If you take a job that pays you less then what you are allowed on unemployment, you report what you earn and unemployment makes up the difference. But it has to be less then what you are allowed on unemployment. For example if you get oh lets say $300.00 a week on unemployment and you earn only $200.00 a week on a job, then unemployment will pay you the $100.00 to make up the difference. But say if you get paid $300.00 a week at a job then you are over the allowance and you get nothing from unemployment, even though you may have been making $500.00 a week at your old job.

I am not saying that the story of my friend applies to everyone on unemployment. Clearly I understand there are lazy ass bums who refuse to work for a living. I even know a few myself. All I am saying is that there can be reasons for not taking a lower paying job. Thats all I am saying. I do not know how may of you may have ever in your life have been on unemployment, but for us it has always been very little money and at the end of the year it has to be reported as income and taxed. And you can not be on it for the rest of your life. It will come to an end.

I've needed unemployment just once in my life.

Longest 3 months ever.

Reading the very complicated rules on "underemployment" at the time, you can do the math to see what the minimum you need to make to be able to collect it, and still be able to collect anything from them.

The thing is, if you were making decent money, its not very much.

I chose at the time to not look for underpaying jobs for that moment because I wanted to have a fully free schedule to interview and search for jobs that actually made what I needed. If it had gone on much longer, I'd have taken what I had to. At the time, I had a pretty good lead on a job though, and staying available paid off for me. I've been working for that company now for about 5 years.

The other problem for Michigan folks right now is that a lot of low paying jobs arent even as available as youd think, either. I know a lot of people trying to get a job, or a second job, in Michigan. Theres such high competition for even the shit paying jobs, it's not as easy as you're making it out to be, unfortunately. The other problem thats hitting everywhere as well now, is the employers themselves. They know there are so many desperate, unemployed people out there.... people are posting for low paying entry level jobs, asking for higher amounts of education and experience *because they can get it*. People who may have been pulling very good wages in the past for their experience and education are desperate enough to take shit jobs with shit wages.
