Revival of the RX-7

wtf was wrong with the rx8??

People stopped buying them.

There is that, but my big one is that it seats more than 2 people.

Call me a sports car purist, but I when I commune at speeds and pulling g's in turns, I want to share it with only one friend, or keep the experience to myself. The extra people in the back throw off the weight balance fore and aft. Not to mention that when I really fly, I can only deal with one person screaming in terror at once (I am usually the one screaming "Banzai!" a Correllian War Cry, or the action quote of the day.) :)

If it seats more than three (in deference to the Vector W-2 that seated three across,) it is a sports sedan, not a sports car.

...

Did I fail to mention I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie?

Anyway, as for fuel economy, now that the ports to the side housing with the RENESIS engine, it has gone up, and they still tune them. Though in my FD with the REW and rotor housing exhaust, I was able to pull anywhere from 27-30mpg hwy, even with a little "spirited" driving. City always stunk at 13.

Two words. McClaren F1.

I would otherwise agree that a sports car is a two-seater. That said, I thought the RX-8 was pretty sweet.

They can only bring it back if Toyota brings back the classic AE86 and Honda brushes off the tooling for the 3rd gen Civics and Del Sol...

Are they gonna make it just a little like the late 80's early 90's versions? If not I am gonna be pissed...love watching them spit out important pieces during a race...and I love watching the crew cry because they suck at building engines.

Never had a problem with my apex seals, nor did people in my old group, and most ran stock apex seals. I have yet to hear reports of the RENESIS having issues when put to forced air induction, though I am out of the loop. Most problems I have seen, which were solved with the advent of the solenoid switch block in the late 90's-2002, was the vacuum system running the twin sequential turbos (which was always my favorite, and I would make the mod of using the solenoid switch block.) The original one had 72 connections, and I believe 10 or so solenoids and 3 check valves. The advent of the block cut the complexity of the switching system by 75%

But there is talk of a single unit turbo for induction.

tbh, i've always wanted to put one of these engines in a motorcycle - one of these years, i'm actually gonna do it!

Since when did early rotaries spit out pieces? The 12A and 13B were damn near bulletproof. Look at IMSA results from the 80's. RX-7s often creamed everything because of reliability. Any engine will blow up if it's builder is inept.

Del Sol? Blech. Gimme a second-gen CRX. Even if it doesn't have the 3rd-gen Civic's better suspension.

Mike - Snag a Norton with a wankle if you want a rotary bike. :p

that made me curious as well. those early rotaries were almost indestructible.

Yes they are good engines...but the builders that handled most of the cars could not resist messing with the apex seals and they almost always screwed them up. Hell, they couldn't even put a decent crosshatch on my D15 block which I would consider the work of someone that should not be handling engines. In the endurance races the rotary never made it that far...maybe it is just the teams here because I have seen the rotary do well and want one myself. I won't bash rotary engines...but I won't let go of my N/A Honda motors...

And yes a Del Sol. The CRX is nice but I like running the shops del sol much more than the CRX for some reason...probably because it has a good N/S motor in it rather than the forced induction bullshit like the CRX.
