Workout routines!

So I'm trying to get back in shape so I can start up martial arts classes again and so that I'm ready for summer (no wool-knit sweaters this years! no sir!) and I was curious what other people are doing. Thinking maybe I can improve my regimen. If not in adding more to it, than at least maybe I can improve on my technique and/or approach.

At the moment my routine consists of: a roughly 4 minute run (gimme a break I'm just getting back into it!), a little bit of kendo (not so great until I order a suburito. My shinai is all kinds of warped so a little counterproductive), some crunches, and some push-ups. Nothing ridiculous or time-consuming, but effective once my endurance is tempered a bit.

So what is everyone else doing? Any martial artists out there? Kendo enthusiasts? Trainers with some pointers?

I thought this might be a fun topic for a new thread so have at it!

I go to Krav Maga class twice a week, class is an hour long. Once a week I go to fight conditioning class taught at the same place I train at, it's a 75 minute class. Two to three times per week I go to the gym and do some cardio on the elliptical and lift weights(because muscle is important). Today is an off day, those are important too. Lately, I've just been lazy as hell, only making it to my KM classes and fight conditioning, then maybe a day at the gym.

I've actually never heard of krav maga. I'll have to look into that.

 You never heard of Krav Maga?

Krav Maga is the official self defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, and has been taught to hundreds of law enforcement agencies and thousands of civilians in the United States.

Krav Maga is a simple, effective self defense system that emphasizes instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios.

There's two places I know of that teach it. First is Krav Maga Detroit, in Troy. Second place is The Fighting Fit, in Wyandotte, which is where I train.

my "routine" isn't set in stone, but is generally as follows:

4x/week - compound lifts (squats/deadlifts, bench/rows, shoulder press/pulldows), + accessory lifts (curls, tri's, shoulder prehab work like face pulls, wall slides, external rotations, YTWL's, etc)

4x/week - running directly after lifting, between 2 - 3.7 miles per run.

1-2x/week - 1 mile run + hill sprints w/pushups (currently 7 rounds for time - 0.1 mi. hill)

Atm Im in Law and Security, and one of the classes is a gym class. My one teacher does all the test "Prep test and beep tests" and such. And the other is a boot camp instructor. She kicks ass. She makes us run a ton, push ups, sit ups, wall jumps, planks, running up and down 4 flights of stairs, and tons more. I feel like jello after her classes. But we only have her once a week.

Personally I think the entire workout comes form the grunting and weights are there to pass the time.

Try being in a gym where you are the only female and there is at least 10 other males around you.... Its pretty awkward sometimes... O.o

What are you talking about?!?! That would be the best gym ever! Me, and a bunch of doods? Hell YEAH!!! I have like 80 year olds at my gym, try getting out of the locker room without being grossed out! I love old people and all, and I'm sure by the time I'm 80, I'll probably not care that I hang out in the locker room all naked talking to my other old wrinklie friends, but as I stand right now, I try to get in and out of that place as quickly as possible!!!

As for the workout routine, I usually do walk/run intervals on the treadmill for 30-45 minutes. Then, two days a week, I pump iron on the machines. I figured it would help me tone up better, especially my arms.

Some days, I go swimming, and other days, my friend is available for walking, and so he and I meet half way, and go for about a 4 mile walk. :)

Man I wish I had access to a proper swimming pool. We might be getting a decent one this summer! *Fingers X'd*

I've recently decided to take the martial arts thing up another (by another I really mean the first) step. I ordered a new bokken with saya (wooden sword and sheath) and am going to be practicing iaido along with some basic martial arts and sai until I get my wheels (a month or two). Then I will be taking actual Iaido and Jujutsu classes at a school relatively nearby. One year from now, I will be a sexy mofo! In 10 years....straight NiNjA!!

My true goal is to be like this guy though....one day.....

  • 3 weeks later...

I have seen people do this weird kind of dance called "The Heel" at City Club, they say its a great workout.

as in, the hip-hop heel move? if so, i would love to see that!

as for my 'routine' it's mostly cardio (walking, jogging, dancing, horse riding), and stretches/calisthenics. admitting to calisthenics makes me feel very old. ;) cardio-wise, though, i'd say on an "off" day i only do 20 minutes of walking, but a typical day is about 40-60 minutes total of moderate intensity from a number of sources.

i am trying to incorporate more strength/weight stuff, but i have health issues that keep fighting me. sigh.
