MONROE, Ohio -- A six-story-tall statue of Jesus Christ with his arms raised along a highway was struck by lightning in a thunderstorm Monday night and burned to the ground, police said.

The "King of Kings" statue, one of southwest Ohio's most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.

The lightning strike set the statue ablaze around 11:15 p.m., Monroe police dispatchers said.

I've driven past "Touchdown Jesus" many times and always thought, 'Man, that's a really big Jesus.' I've also offered to sell the major media sources a very blurry picture I took of Touchdown Jesus while driving past it (Because safety is my middle name!) so they could have yet another photo of it as it once stood.... but ... they still haven't gotten back to me.

Anywho, I guess the lesson here is, that's what they get for constructing a statue made of fiberglass/foam over a metal frame that tall.... lightning rod jesus!

this is one of the top issues i have with many of the organized religious institutions with which i've had experience. seriously, why do they have to have a fancy-ass "house of worship", other than to make themselves feel good? "oooh - look at our fancy church! aren't we special, mr. homeless guy!?" and a statue? a freakin' statue, when there are people in serious need?

There are very few Christians I've met that actually SOMEWHAT follow the teachings and practices of Christ. Most people call themselves Christian and never even read any of the scriptures they're just Christian because it's the socially accepted thing to do. The whole thing is skewed. Then asshats like Pat Robertson came along and found out he could make a buck off of some suckers and it became even more corrupt. Downward spiral, and I don't think it's ever going to recover. Giant downward spiral of corruption, trying to control, trying to coerce money from, trying to get worshiped as humans instead of telling humans to worship God/Christ, etc.

This church that had their statue struck down fully encompassed the Pretender Christian viewpoint and as I said earlier, I'm only sad the church itself didn't burn down to the ground too. Maybe they'll take this as a sign from God...? Probably too ignorant though, they probably will think the Devil sent the lightning .
