What makes a track "Club Worthy"

I know this may turn into a "what you want to hear at the club" thread, but I actually would like to discuss the topic.

A lot of the people on the board may not go to the club any more, for whatever reason. But for some people, the reason is the music. I wanted to discuss with everyone, what there opinion is on a good WHAT MAKES a good club track. We all have different views on the music that is played. While some people may think that the new X-rX (A newish Harsh EBM)track is freaking amazing, other will say its "crappy oontz music". Where on the other side of the coin, we have classics like "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division (founding Post-Punk band). Which a bunch of people may think is "Unable to be danced to" But both are club hits either way you slice it. So FOR YOU, what makes a track "Club Worthy"? Is it all about the beat? Is it the lyrics? Is it the band? How old/new the track is? Are you just a genre snob? Is it the BPM/speed of the track?

Being out in the West Coast of the U.S - i am exposed to quite an interest assortment of music styles.

Really loving the Rhythmic Noiz / HARSH EBM coming out of SO CAL.... W.A.S.T.E / Noiz+Zilenth / ACRONYCHAL / EMBODI / Manufactura / To Mega Therion / etc....

Yes there other types / genres out here - but i really enjoy this type of music....

To describe this type of music one thing - but to feel this music live is something else. I have not seen any genre aside from Metal \ Rock \ Rave style have such energy live.

But again - it is everyone's personal taste....

A good club song for me is something that can get the job done of making me want to dance, but without feeling stupid doing so. If I get out there and hear a Full Metal Jacket quote taken out of context and repeated "skull fuck you skull fuck you skull fuck you..." I feel like myself and everyone around me is kind of a hackneyed douchebag for getting down to it. It's juvenile. On the other hand, I still haven't found a good way of dancing to the full-length version of "Bela Lugosi's Dead".

For me, it comes down to MELODY. I need melody just as much as I need rhythm. And also, as I've said, lyrics that don't make me feel like I'm a hairy-necked jerk that collects swords.

Being a big fan of spazcore music, lyrics mean little to nothing for me. Its simply another instrument the majority of the time.

Drums / Beat is key.

To often artist stick with standard 4/4 and snare on 2. When they do change it up its still in 4/4. I get that 4/4 is most appealing to ears and its easy to dance to, but it is far from imposable to dance to other times. 4/4 is just easy mode.

Break downs and changes.

Ok I get it, your song is Uber Epic with distorted strings playing through a break down. I don't understand the fear by (some) artist to replace those distorted pad strings with, I don't know say... a distorted guitar? or bass? or even by recording the sound of a rubber band being plucked. The scene is loosing originality, and is that not what has drawn most of us to it, the originality? Be original in break downs and changes then leave what has been done in the past.

Lyrics / Vocals / Samples

Samples are tricky, I myself can not really get out and dance to a loony toons sample, but I see others do it every week. Find obscure samples to use or record your own. When it comes down to lyrics and vocals, you have it or you don't.

Songs on a whole,

If a song just has that thing, you know it...you like it...you dance to it..

Melody's compliment bass riffs and the drums emphasize the emotion of the song.

Lyrics and vocals should act not only as the story of the song, but also as an instrument within it.

This is simply my opinion, it is true for me, for some it will not be true.

I very much like clubbing (even though I don't do it very much any more).

The club music I like is usually about 50% what other people like also, and 50% me and some other lonely dude on the dance floor will be the only guy out there for music.

I guess the question is weather or not it causes a "SURGE" in my senses.... In a certain sense I don't like superficial music (with a few exceptions). The music has to have some kind of power and draw to it that makes my mind burn a bit (which means NOT most Combichrist... or that Face down ass up song...)

I like music as an active process not as a passive one... (I really don't drink... so songs that are just sort of background sounds to stumble around to do not appeal to me). So things that have movement and structure I like... songs that you can listen to with your eyes closed and move to.

At least from what I see on the dance floor it's all about the beat and if you can dance to it. Let's be honest, it's a club and people want to dance. Most of the songs played at the city and necto I normally wouldn't listen to, but when played in a club atmosphere with an emphasis on the kick drum and bass, it all makes sense.

If I were a DJ I would play mostly danceable industrial and ebm songs at various speeds, but throw a song from another genre in once in a while to break up the monotony like goth, deathrock, punk, post-punk, etc...

For an experiment have a DJ play Tool, a band that frequently uses odd time signatures, and just watch everyone on the dance floor. I guarantee it will be hilarious and everyone will then understand that it's all about the beat when playing music in the club.

Variety is a big thing with me as well as a good sound system,if something good is playing I'll listen to it,if not I have my iPod then,that's if I'm not talking to anyone.
