LadyKay
I came across this on Youtube while look for cooking ideals. Clara is 94 year old and has all these recipes from back in the great depression. She also talks a little about how life was for her as a child growing up in the depression. Good food and cheap to make. She shows you how to make due on what you have. http://www.youtube.com/user/DepressionCooking Edited November 8, 2010 by LadyKay
taysteewonderbunny
Oh darn, I was hoping it was recipes for comfort food for when you are depressed. Or foods that will help you feel less depressed. Because I'm always depressed in this season regardless of all the wonderful things going on in my life right now, and I could use a good recipe for potato bacon soup or something. jynxxxedangel
This is great! Thanks for the link. As a poor southern-raised woman, making do with very little in the pantry is my specialty. There is a website that I'll add to this thread, which helps you to find recipes, according to the ingredients you have on hand: SuperCook.com

prick
I do find this topic interesting. The depression strikes close to my heart knowing what my family dealt with. I think its becoming popular again because times are so bad again.

prick
My great grandmother used to make Marijuana soup. No joke, in the summer she would have the fan blowing and the window open. My mom and aunt would rush in and close her windows. They would say your going to get arrested for getting the neighborhood stoned.

Enishi
You can make a lot of good foods using relatively simple ingredients, it's all about the combinations. Speaking of which don't mix in bean sprouts with an omelet or scrambled eggs. BAD IDEA.
KatRN05
I don't know what I just made but I'll call it "crap in a pot"...I browned a pound of ground beef and threw it in the crockpot with some mushrooms, onions, a can of cream of mushroom soup and a can of milk. Seasoned it with garlic and pepper and throw in a bag of frozen mixed veggies. Guess, I'll make some smashed potatoes too.

It's too bad we aren't all neighbors and have some arable land. We could till it together and raise some goats and chickens and eat in good company every night. Haven't tried the final product yet but I did taste test it and so far so good. Had to season it a lot and add a little bit of salt. I thickened it with some cornstarch too.
