How Many of You are from a Small Town?

So tonight while talking to someone I heard there are plenty of others out there like me. Small town Kid, who was A. Born There, or B. The Major One: You moved there and are Now Trapped?

How many of you Got out? Or how many of you, Like I am is still in it, yet see's the door that will get you out open at the end? Or perhaps, Screwed, you can't get out...

How did you Come to Find Goth? How long did it take you to finally understand what it is (If it has ever happened. I seen a lot of it on other websites. Also for those who go WTF, be lucky you were raised around it and had it at the first Try.)

Also the Last Question, Where do you want to live?

Im from the third largest city in the state, Warren. But I dream of the nday I build my cabin at Houghton lake and can move there permanently. Either that or sell the property and build a place more rustically located in northern Michigan.

Thanks for the Journey flashback in the title. Gads I'm old. :)

Seen this happen to friends. College/University is an option. Either the Small Town Kid gets into a field that leads them out of the Small Town, or become so scared of the vast mix of people that they rush back to the comfort of the small town. Sounds a bit Lovecraftian (go insane (join the bigger whole,) or retreat to what's comfortable (return home,)) but it's true. When I was at university (a small university,) I saw several friends from small towns go on to bigger and better things in the city. I also saw several from small towns that were so scared of the different points of view that they went back home. I visited homes of a lot of my friends, and can confirm the size of their town was small.

As for when I knew I was goth: Well, I have always been a bit, well, off. *shocks and horrors!!!* When I was about 9 or 10, I remember seeing the movie Heavy Metal. There was one song that struck a chord in me. "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" by the Blue Oyster Cult. Dark. Despotic. Nihilistic. Beautiful. Came across other groups that appealed to me: Depeche Mode, the New Wave stuff, it goes on.

College was the the big realization for me. A few people were like me as well, dressed a little darker than I did (I have always been a fan of neutrals/greys/blues/blacks,) but were far more interesting to talk to than the pop culture followers. And with a great deal more depth of discussion. Before too long, a name came to it. It was Goth. Never had a problem being classified as one. It is one aspect of me. i have to go against the fashions of piercings and tattoos, as I have to regularly interface with the normal population. To me, it makes no difference. The nihilistic, dark beauty is not something that I need to wear externally. It is something I carry with me.

As for where I want to live, I would want to live on a lonely atoll or an isolated part of a tropical island. The beauty of nature by day, and beauty of the backbone of the galaxy at night. And I wouldn't be so frakking freezing with these hawaiian genetics I have in the middle of this giant land mass/heat sink that I live in.

My Mom tried to get me out of this area as best as she could. She took me to Mexico, traveled all over the states with me, and well, I'm a very strong woman and I love being social as hell. Its because all their life, they never were prept and lived within the walls of that small town. I thank my mom everyday, even though we get into cat fights a lot because.. I'm a female, she's a female.. LMAO XD

Well put your mind to it, work out a plan, find some people you can stay with for a visit, see if you like it, if you do try to find a place that will hire you. If they will ask the people if you can stay with them tell you work up a little more money to get a place of your own. It always works if you do your part and you keep strong

I'm from Milan. Currently living there again for the moment. :\

Not only does Milan have that white trash vibe, but it doesn't even have particularly good natural scenery. The culture and landscape is more akin to that of Ohio. I usually have to drive a bit to see forests or hills that I enjoy.

I prefer some of the smaller towns I've seen up north. I LOVE Manistee.

I was born in Manistee (way, up at the top of the mitten- and about as small-town as it gets) but we only lived there until I was about 2 months old. After that, we moved to Redford, Monroe La Salle, and finally into Ohio, where I lived until I moved up to the Detroit-area about 8-ish years ago.

I visited Manistee about 4 years ago and it seems like a nice, albeit small town. Not sure I could ever live there, but it's a nice place to visit :)

I've lived in metro Detroit most of my life so I'm used to big communities. On the one hand, it's great being a performer is a large community as there are always opportunities for gigs and such. On the downside, there is a lot of competition willing to underbid you.

In 2004, I moved out to a small mountain town in Colorado for a job. On the upside, I was one of the only performers of my kind there so I was in demand a lot. Plus, I couldn't go anywhere in that town without people saying, "Oh, you're that comedian from the club. I saw your show last week," and they'd give me free stuff. There were two restaurants in town I never had to pay for my food at all because it was always comped. So that's cool. On the downside though, I had to drive 45 minutes just to get to a Home Depot and about an hour and a half to get any of the other shops and amenities I took for granted in Detroit.

Ideally, I'd like to live in a small to mid-sized community but within only a half-hour driving distance of a decent city.

I live in Posen, was born and raised here. It's 5 hours north of Detroit, 2 hours south of the Mackinaw Bridge, and 20 minutes away from the coast of Lake Huron. My high school graduating class was 27 kids counting me. I'm still here because my dad has brain cancer and I'm helping to take care of him. And I can't work due to mental illness issues.

For those who want to know just how north I am, I've included a map that shows where Posen is, with me pointing it out.

I live in the country outside of the drain (Adrian). I'm more of a social moth than a social butterfly, and probably more accepting of isolation than the average person. I've given up on over-the-top fashion from having lived here so long, and given other settings and circumstances I wouldn't return to it.

I'd like to move Northeast eventually, not so far that I'm out of driving distance from all the friends I have.

I lived in Southwest Detroit until I couldnt take care of my Grandma anymore. We had to move in with my Mother about 4 years ago, then Grandma passed and I was stuck here in Canadian Lakes. Its up between Mount Pleasent and Big Rapids mostly older people here. Nearest city is Mount Pleasent, I hate it here because its above the snow belt and we get a lot of lake effect snow, and if you wanna go anywhere it takes all day! But I wouldnt raise my boys anywhere else but here. They love the fishing and walks in the woods with Me and the schools are alot better than Detroit area schools. The one place I would love to live would be New York City. I had the chance to visit there in 2004 and it was amazing. I didnt discover goth it was just how I was raised.

I lived in a small town with my mom until I was in my early 20s. It didn't really bother me at the time, because I was very introverted and kept to myself when I was younger, and because both of my parents would take me on a lot of trips, so I got to experience culture.

However, if someone told me that I had to go live there now, I would probably tell them to just kill me.

She is more into new wave and 80's... and does not like much industrial...although she loves "this corrosion" by "sisters of mercy" which is neat.

But I am goth as fuck in case you didnt know. I just dont dress it much and make fun of people who do, but dont listen to the music.

See Sturgis all the way to the Bottom. That's where I am Lol. But I use to Live in Mackinaw, I was born there. Now I'm stranded here. I do hope your father has luck, and please be strong. My brothers father just got diagnosed with it a year ago..and this year, his meds made him lose his mind...and it ended with a bang...a month ago... so yeah, I wish you two plenty of luck

Never judge a book by its cover. I'm into fashion modeling, and you wouldn't even know it until you found my CD Case. And My mom is a country loving Christian. So My music, is Shunned, I mean Shunned to Hell in her words. And I'm even talking about my Deathrock bands.

Ah so you know what winter is like up here. How everyone seems to get the hell out of town, and it's all quiet because there isn't much tourist action except for the snowmobilers. It's lonely up here come winter.
