What do you want to be when you grow up?

Recommended Posts

We end up knowing so much about our fellow DGN folk, but I can honestly say I have no idea what most of you do for a living (or are aspiring to be).

You don't have to get personal and say where exactly it is you work, how about just what it is you do?

Also, if you don't plan on having your current job for the rest of your working days, what is it you are wanting to go into?

When you were a little kid (just for shits and giggles) what did you see yourself doing for a career as a grown-up?

Just thought it would be a fun topic, not sure if it has been done before (or at least recently). You can learn (sometimes, not always) a lot about a person's personality by what profession they choose, so it's almost another get-to-know-you kinda thread.

Who knows? You might find other people on here either already established in your desired field of work or maybe up-and-coming so that you are able to network. Could be beneficial in the long run.

I want to be that old man who sits in a rocking chair on the porch waving my cane at kids yelling at them to, "Get off my lawn!" Seriously. I'll even pay some highschoolers $20/week to walk on my lawn on their way home from school just so I can yell at them to go the hell away.

You don't even have to pay anyone, just live in Warren.

When I was a kid I wanted to either be a singer, veterinarian, or writer.

In middleschool it changed to a manga-ka (yeah right...pffft!) and then switched back to writer. When I attended college, I planned to major in zoology and go into something with animals.

Now, I merely work at a drugstore. But will probably be bumped up to a manager position soon (and then who knows).

When I grow up, I want to be a Jedi.

I always said "artist". I AM an artist, I dont need tog row up to be one.

I just kinda want to get into crime scene clean-up now. Work a dirty job and come home and feel like I did something good by rendering a home useful again. Thankless job but eh, it'd need to be done.

Or if I returned to school, I'd do something medical. I could so kick major ass in it.

I am where I want to be. Just want to finish the job.

I will still "play" as a child, as in have a sense of humor, as we all do in the operating room, or at least the ones I have worked. Keeps me pleasant on the floor as well. Hell, shocked my last program director in that the nurses had nothing but positive things to say on my evaluations, unlike my senior residents at the time.

I always wanted to be a singer/songwriter, when I was a kid, I admired the pretty soprano vocals of, like Tiffani, Mariah Carey, Debbie Gibson, Aaliyah, and Selena, to name of the top of my head (at one point in High school kids called me "Mariah" because I could hit, probably the highest notes of any of the kids in glee club LOL) but, with my writing came an issue because I always, would write dark, depressing, poems/song lyrics, which did not fit into the whole pop love song stuff. I also loved Latin Freestyle music starting at age 12ish the first time I ever heard it, so I started writing latin freestyle lyrics, my friends would tell me their relationship issues and I would come up with lyrics to their love life and a melody in like 5 minutes, (we smoked alot of weed, so it helped:)One of the local freestyle DJ's, started advertising for local freestyle singers to put on his CD's, my friends kept driving me crazy for years to call him, but my stupid self-esteem issues got the best of me, when I finally did try to contact him, he was incarcerated already:(

I also fell in love with Portishead the first time I heard Beth Gibbons' voice, and the lyrics, and the dark, background music, that is when I started thinking, "aha, I can actually continue writing dark, deep, stuff, but make it sound pretty:)" but I started smoking cigs and dropped out of high school, got drunk, got high, fell in love, and got pregnant. Anyway, I still got an me an alternative education, went to college, eventually got my Bachelor's in Social Work. I worked in Juvenile Justice since before I had my degree, got the degree did homeless outreach in Cass Corridor and Southwest Detroit area mainly (Roosevelt Park by the old train station was were we did alot of work also),but I got burned out not the clients and job itself, but the politics within the agency,so I went and worked as a Case Manager with homeless, mentally ill adults who were also substance abusers at another agency, then that pretty much started falling apart due to funding and um, poor management, so I ended up a Juvenile Probation officer again until about 2 weeks ago. Now, I am nothing at this time. If I could go back to doing Outreach, of any sort, I would definitely, I love walking or driving around the city and meeting people, and trying to help them.

I always wanted to be a cop growing up. Unfortunately I had severe asthma as a teen to the point of being rushed to the hospital a few times. I think I almost drowned as a toddler as well but I'm not sure since I've never asked my mom about it. Its my earliest memory and sometimes it feels like it could have been a dream. Anyway now I hyperventilate whenever I lose my breath :(. I'm banned from fitness USA for feinting while I was working out a few years ago. So now I just want a descent job with benefits. The job I have pays descent enough, but no benefits.

When I was small I wanted to be an astronaut. (not just an astronaut like going to the moon, nooo, I wanted to be piloting a spaceship and do *real* space travel to other galaxies and stuff).

Now I'm just scraping by doing odd jobs and typing and helping my mom a bit in her court reporting biz. Not what I would choose but will have to do for the moment.

Seriously thinking of trying to scrape together the cash to buy a foreclosure, fix it up and rent it out. Working all these little jobs is wearing me out and a little rental income would be quite helpful.

Sort of sad to think of those childhood dreams - no spaceships for me. *sigh*

Think about what you just said a few minutes, and tell me if you think thats true, lol.

Isn't Dir. of Photography (sorry, I can't type out "DP" without incessantly giggling) something that requires maybe some credentials like a degree in photography perhaps? Just trying to figure out why you wouldn't be able to at this time.

Didn't even realize that I forgot to put my career shit in here.

I always wanted to be an actor, writer, musician (lead singer) or a combination of the three. I actually am working on my writing goals and have been penning three novels for a few years. I have been more productive in meeting my goals and have ideas for maybe 2-3 more books as of right now. I also think, and this may be a shot in the dark but what the hell, that if they are intriguing enough they may be made into movies in which I would get to act in them. I used to think I was perfect for playing a particular character from the series I'm writing but think I may be too old now to pull it off (she is 18). With Hollywood magic, though, who knows. There is another character, however, that I would be able to play perfectly and is almost 30 in the first book. Music is something I still plan to do when I have more time (out of college in two semesters) and have much in mind for it. I don't ever really plan to get "famous" from the music I make, but if I can get the gears in people's heads turning and get across what I'd like to say, then that will probably be enough for me.

As of right now, our more realistic career choices are bond retrieval and private security. We were originally going to be police but figured that this choice was not as suited for us as we are the types who work well together (usually couples cannot work in the same dept.), are not privy to uniforms, work better without authority, and are self-starters. I also would feel bad having to arrest people for trivial shit, such as marijuana. As a cop too, so many people dislike you, the pay is also VERY low compared to being a bond retrieval agent or personnel in the private security sector (both make usually 2-3 times what officers make, have much less liability, and do not have to have guns that are regulated to the point where they are ineffective against the weapons most criminals carry). Also, we would be almost impervious to being sued.

As a disclaimer, if one person asks "Like Dog the Bounty Hunter?" I will virtual-slap you . He has no right being the in field as an ex-felon, his show caused the field to be FLOODED with people who can't hack it or don't know what they're doing, and he's pretty much made a circus out of the whole thing. Actually respected bond retrieval agents DON'T generally look up to the guy for good reason and we tend to believe his show does more harm than good for the field.

There are things I would like to be. I always wanted to own my own bait shop and boat livery. I also always wanted to be a conservation officer working for the Michigan department of natural resources. A hunting and fishing guide would kick ass too. For me tho location is more important then career. As long as I get to move up to my property at Houghton lake or somewhere else in the Great North I would be so happy. I could shovel shit with a smile as long as I was up there.
