In order to enter the USA, I was never touched, I was never “Backscatted,” and I was never metal detected. In the end, it took 2.5 hours, but I proved that it is possible. I’m looking forward to my next flight on Wednesday.

It's interesting to see how there's just now an uproar over full body scanners when in fact these things have been in place in some areas of the country since 2006. We can thank the shoe bomber, Richard Reid, and the attempted bombing of an airplane over Detroit last year for this.

I say we get a big group of guys together and all book the same cheap flight out to Vegas or something (cheapest flight we can find, wherever it's to). Then we'll all wear those banana hammock swimsuits, and only banana hammocks.

What I don't understand, if we supposedly need this amount of security on flights, is why, when you initially book the flight, there is no type of screening process or background check. I think that when you book your flight you should have to give more information and answer a few basic questions, similar to filling out a job application. Obviously it doesn't matter where you used to work, where you went to school, or whether you have great communication skills and know how to use Microsoft Excel, but questions like "Have you ever been convicted of a felony?" or "Have you ever had any problems with flying or with airport staff?" would be relevant, and maybe even some of those psychological/behavioral questions they sometimes include with job applications would be helpful.I, personally, would much rather submit to a background check before flying, than to being assaulted or given potentially harmful radiation at the gate. I know, it wouldn't necessarily work with people who have no previous records, and I am not suggesting that it be done in lieu of using metal detectors, scanning and sniffing bags, etc., but it still seems like less of a violation of privacy to me than full body scans and "pat-downs," provided that the information from the background checks was only given to authorized personnel.

I don't get what the big deal is...its like the smoking ban thing right? We all wanted to be safe so BAM we asked for increased security and here it is!

Look at all the factors and you can see why it is going to be rough if we want our planes to be somewhat safe. Flying is a quick mode of transportation that is also dangerous if not everything goes right so if you want to go somewhere fast then expect some sort of trade off as far as comforts goes...like having someone touching your balls.

Shit I don't hear the kids complaining about this at the schools when they have to go through security! I am not saying that it is right but its there and it can be easily dealt with...

I would rather go through the extra steps to ensure safety than have to read about 150-300 (depending on aircraft) families be torn apart by avoidable tragedy.

I got ya that we can't make anything 100% safe but we can help keep the occurrences down to a minimum.

There does need to be a better way to collect relevant information about high risk fliers and improvements made on communicating pertinent information though. A bit of common sense wouldn't hurt either.

Which is fine, to each his own. However, we do have the right to free ("free", here, meaning "unrestricted") travel between the states of the union. Saenz v. Roe, 526 U.S. 489 (1999) established, in Justice Stevens' words, that "The United States Constitution protects three separate aspects of the right to travel among the states: the right to enter one state and leave another, the right to be treated as a welcome visitor rather than a hostile stranger(1) , and for those who become permanent residents of a state, the right to be treated equally to native born citizens(2). And no, telling someone that they're free to travel between the states as long as they walk, rather than driving or flying, is not a valid argument(3).

Disregarding all of that, one might say, "What do I care? I never fly, anyway." What about those who do? What about those who have to fly several times a week for their jobs? Is it right that these people are getting potentially harmful amounts of radiation? With all the talk about health care being a "right" in this country, I find it interesting that in this case, our right to not have the government adversely affect our health is being ignored.

Also, there is the eternal "slippery slope" concern: how much of this kind of thing are you willing to accept? I posted a Homeland Security video earlier in this thread that talks about scanners for shopping malls, concerts, sporting events, etc. that can supposedly detect whether or not someone is thinking about causing trouble. Are you willing to go through this every time you shop? How do you feel about British-style surveillance, with cameras monitoring the entire city? How about cameras in your home? After all, if you've got nothing to hide, what's the harm?

Finally, isn't the whole point of terrorism to scare a populace so badly that the society has to restructure the way people go about their daily lives? It seems to me that the "terrorists" have won, hands down, not to mention the Congresspeople and government officials that are heavily invested financially in the firms that produce the equipment that make a Big Brother state possible.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. When the citizens of this country step up and grow a pair, we won't need all this privacy invading security. The "protection" it promises is an illusion. If someone wants to hijack a plane, they'll find a way, no matter how thorough TSA searches are.

And what do I mean by grow a pair? I mean just that, If some shit bag terrorist tries to hijack a plane, why don't a few of us just stand up and knock his ass the fuck out?

I don't know about any of you, but if I were in that situation, I'll know I have 2 choices, either sit down and hope the hijacker isn't gonna wanna crash the plane and die, or stand up and fight for my own life, and set an example to these ass fucks that we're not tolerating this shit anymore, that if they want to try, they're gonna have a plane full of people that will NOT let them succeed. Once they see that enough of us have the balls to actually defend ourselves, then really, what the hell else can they do?

Every time people get to the boiling point over a current and relevent affair, they are automatically distracted by something stupid like the results of the latest "reality tv" game show. It proves how immensely stupid people are. And with Sarah Palin and her ilk all too happy to make a grab at power when nobody is paying attention. It is absolutely mystifying to me as to how so many people can be stupid enough to not notice that. Then again, look what happened when Bush bought his way into the Presidency TWICE. Nobody hollered about that! But yeah when a black man is DEMOCRATICALLY elected to the Presidency, people everywhere flip out. Don't you just love democracy?
